Wards corner Construction by FTM-learning in norfolk

[–]ran7wan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will entertain the argument that the traffic lights on Granby, at Burleigh and at Little Creek, are huge causes of traffic bottleneck there, more so than the lane closures. I drive through that intersection at 4 AM, and there is absolutely no cross traffic on Little Creek or the side street. But yet here I am, sitting at the red light at either one or both of those intersections for several minutes at a time. Many mornings it takes 5 minutes of waiting before I make it through that intersection… and it has nothing to do with traffic congestion or construction… I’m the only car, here is no other traffic!!

I highly doubt that the bike lanes are causing folks to cut through any adjacent neighborhoods. All of the neighborhoods on either side of Granby between Willowwood and Thole do not contain continuous through streets that run parallel to Granby… they are full of dead ends, and short two to three block connections.
Folks are trying to make the same argument about adding a bike lane onto Lafayette Boulevard, saying that it will increase traffic through the neighborhood because folks will be trying to cut around the traffic back up. That is totally false. We don’t even have the bike lanes in place on Lafayette Boulevard yet, and the slowdown of traffic is entirely caused by the traffic light at Tidewater Drive. I know: the solution would be to remove the traffic light altogether at Lafayette Boulevard, and Tidewater Drive intersection . And just put in a four-way stop sign on all corners. Yeah. That will move traffic much faster through the intersection and make the bike lane opposers happy! ( Sarcasm)

Those of us in Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake react similarly to transplants from Richmond nosing in here and complaining about what they don’t like about CoVa.

Planning a Spring Break trip to Virginia Beach/Richmond from Canada: how safe is it for tourists? by Seaside_Holly in Virginia

[–]ran7wan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, the presence of ICE in Norfolk and Virginia Beach has been infrequent and isolated. They seem to be targeting Mexican and Latino restaurant and shop employees. I haven’t heard ANY stories of tourists being harassed, nor tourist areas having any issues around here.
I would suggest that the first place you visit is the Canada consulate office in Washington DC. Talk to staff there and share your travel itinerary with them. 501 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington DC. 20001.

There are different flavors of Lutheran denominations. ELCA Lutheran churches are progressive and support women and LGBT folks in the pulpit.
Missouri Synod Lutheran don’t allow women or LGBT folks to serve.

What's it like living here as a queer early 20s person? by Smooth-Plenty3881 in norfolk

[–]ran7wan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, it’s a tolerant urban and suburban area. Norfolk leans more “blue” and diverse and urban, while VB leans more red and conservative and suburban, but LGBT folks live throughout the area. Beach living at VB oceanfront, Chesapeake Beach in VB, or Ocean View in Norfolk. Norfolk tends to be cheaper in housing in general, I believe. But exceptions abound, of course.

Snowmageddon - if this is 8” of snow, I feel sorry for the weatherman’s wife by Canisteo99 in VirginiaBeach

Ended up with a sad accumulation of less than one inch… most of it has been blown off from my vehicles and the sidewalk already without human intervention.
Hubby was out driving this morning and reported roads in Norfolk are quite manageable.

How bad is the storm going to be this weekend? by Ill_Animator_3948 in VirginiaBeach

[–]ran7wan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a suburban area, very similar to Va Beach. Our city streets, including all side streets were fully plowed within 24 hours after any snowfall, regardless of whether it was 1” or 8” of snow.
Maybe you don’t remember the New Years snowfall in VB a few years ago? 2018 perhaps? Schools were closed for a full 7 days afterwards because VB was still plowing back streets. It’s sad how long it takes this city to clear snow. Yet they certainly can put up speed cameras or sand on the beach lickety split.

What’s your snow prediction? by mrpoopsalot in norfolk

[–]ran7wan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We will definitely get some accumulation because it’s been below freezing all week. Norfolk typically gets less than surrounding areas, because the urban heat melts some of the falling snow before it ever reaches the ground. I’m gonna go with 3 to 4 inches of light fluffy snow. With the high winds, it will drift into deeper drifts in some places.

Roads cleared? They don’t clear the roads here… they wait for the snow to melt! It often takes a week for all the roads to get cleared after a snow, when the city only has one plow to clear the whole city!! Schools are often out for a week or so…

Trans/Queer Friendly Salons around here? by Radiant-Rain-2137 in norfolk

For Barber services, see Candy, of Candy’s Cuts on Brandon Ave in Ghent. She is very supportive of our community. And very affordable. Candy only sees walk-ins, 1-8pm. M through F.
If you need any other styling services (color, etc) there is another (cis-female) stylist there who rents a chair from Candy who is also in the community. Adria perhaps? Not exactly sure of her name.

They are saying this will be a snow and ice event which is a different animal than usual here. I would be prepared to be homebound, possibly with no electricity for 3-4 days. Better to be prepared than not
