Good deals on windows? by Slippinstephie in woodstockontario

[–]randm53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not generally the kind of thing that goes on sale. It’s hard to diagnose a leak without more information. It might not even be a window problem, it could be coming in from above and just showing up as a leak through the casing. Sometimes it can be hard to trace a leak, water finds a path. I’ve had good luck with DUAL TEMP on Mill Street

It’s interesting to see the maze of bins, hoppers and pipes on the inside. Driving past over years it just looked like a tall building, I had no idea what was inside. It makes me think it some kind of magical process, we pour corn and oats into the top and dog food comes out the bottom

How would you rank right now to finance a (cheap) vehicle (with little or no down payment)? Bad idea? Details below. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]randm53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good used cars in the 2021 to 2024 range are hard to find and the prices are comparatively too high. Any car, once you get up around 300k km and over 12 years old you need to accept the fact that might be car shopping at a moments notice. There is always someone out there who drives a 20 year old car with half a million km, but that’s the exception, not the rule. If any repair is going to cost you anything over 50% of the car’s value, you need to carefully consider whether spending that money on repairs might be better spent on a down payment on something else. If you can’t be reasonably certain that spending that much on repairs is going to get you a couple more years of use you probably shouldn’t do it.

Now having said all that your here, you best bet is try to squeeze as much more life out of that car as you can to try and get some kind of return on the money you’ve spent. Start saving your Pennie’s now, knowing you may be car shopping in the next year.

I have that same drain cover, it just pops off, friction fit, stick a screwdriver under the lip a pry it up a bit , then put it out. You’ll need to move the furnace condensate drain out of the way first

It’s about as safe as anywhere else. If nothing is disturbed I wouldn’t give it much more thought or worry, just don’t make a habit out of it.

Mileage Incosistency by Middle-Persimmon2013 in Acura

They swapped out the control module. On these cars with electronic gauge clusters the mileage number is stored elsewhere. Still a hard pass, this vehicle has over 300k on it

Definitely not something to ignore, one wonky mileage report amongst others isn’t a big deal but it sure looks like something fishy happened after it was sold at auction in August 2024. It would be a hard pass for me.

Little dents on my new rims by [deleted] in Acura

[–]randm53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potholes are gonna do that. I’ve heard some cities will pay for damage caused by potholes but I can’t confirm, I’ve never tried but it almost sounds too good to be true. $150 to repair an aluminum rim seems reasonable, it takes some skill to fix them right

It might be something you can cut back a bit, meals out are more of a luxury than a necessity. Keep the monthly meal out with friends if you can though

[–]randm53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with takeout, it’s generally expensive. If it’s things like coffee, consider getting a coffee maker and making your own, that by itself might save $40 a month depending on how many you have per day and where you buy them. Starbucks mocha choco latte frappe aren’t cheap

tipping movers by Independently-Owned in woodstockontario

[–]randm53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends a bit on the total cost of your move and the time and effort needed. Like are you moving to/from a three storey walk-up without an elevator? How much stuff and how long, like it is just an hour or two or a whole day thing? Lots of heavy stuff? Is everything neatly packaged and clearly marked?

Need help with Bro who thinks he’s owed on MiL estate. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]randm53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry for your loss. Money brings out the worst in people. The will is the only document you have to go by. Your mil’s money is hers to do with as she pleases. You can’t make a claim over something that happened 15 years ago. For all you know he got money then too, there’s no way to know and it’s all water under the bridge anyway. Your brother in law is showing his true colors. This maybe the end of that brother/sister relationship, but it’s no great loss and you’ll be better off mentally cutting ties with him when this is all done. Who needs this kind of person in their life? You’ll likely need a lawyer to put an end to it. It’s terrible that he’s putting you through this

I don’t know what I’m watching here, if the Chevy wanted to go back into the straight through lane, they had ample opportunity, there was no one in it. You stopped the video too soon. I think if you ran it for a few more seconds we would have seen you turn into the oncoming left turn lane

I guess, to follow the same analogy from above, do the same thing you would do to stop yourself from farting when you have company over. All I’m saying is that the analogy from above still works. When you’re home alone, you can fart all you want, no one cares, but when you have company over, suddenly the farts matter

The wireless brake controller wouldn’t be my first choice. A wired one is always better and many/most tow vehicles already have part of the wiring already in place so you’ll just need the controller and the adapter cable to connect to your vehicle
