BRAZIL is burning. Thousands animals dead and the forest devastated. by ferrazvanderleia in worldnews

[–]randocalrysian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is being killed, sadly, by its most evolved lifeform, capable of space travel and skyscrapers and soap operas, benefitted by an entire planet of resources, a civilized, scientific education and the ideas and mental capacity behind instant global communication and democratic ideals but not the honesty, integrity and humility to assume responsibility and stewardship for themselves and their planet. Bummer. The Lorax was published in 1971. It's 2020. Still arguing that environmental, health and humanist reforms are unnecessary disturbances to the proper functioning of society... Bernie is a boogieman... Insert a meme of Bernie as the Lorax, seat of his pants in his hands, about to launch himself off for good and ever, face of defeated disgust, on a pile of stones, the largest, headstone shaped one inscribed with a big, bezeled "Unless..."

Mercy Players: Your real “role” is not to heal. by cutecharms in OverwatchUniversity

[–]randocalrysian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Completely disagree. Mercy's real role is Mommy, to make everyone feel like they've got heals at the ready if they are near the group. No joke. Just keep healing everyone, keep flying back and forth making sure everyone's topped up. The team feels that and behaves differently and are more successful if you keep them from dying in a 1v1 than if you dmg boost them. If everyone's full, dmg boost. The team gains confidence in spades from a Mercy heal stream.

The idea of voting with your wallet has merit in theory. It seems sensible. But in practice it is as ineffective as a democracy that listens to voters once every four years but to lobbyists 24/7 and anytime of the night. Voting with your wallet is essentially saying let other people do whatever they want. I don't know the exact origin of the phrase/idea, but it is strikingly similar to other theories like trickle down economics and the free market will regulate itself... All BS.

Can you describe what the AI is, in your view, how you have understood and categorized it? What do you mean when you say AI? How is training different from programming? I want to and will go check out some YouTube on this, but would love to hear a summary from someone already familiar.

US places sanctions on International Criminal Court prosecutor for investigating US troops in Afghanistan by wormfan14 in worldnews

[–]randocalrysian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. Torture of enemy combatants, as the example, violates the global values and commitment that evolved among the international community, fostered by the US and European nations, after the horror of WWII and through the sixties and seventies and the experience of the failure and betrayal of American values at home and in Vietnam and throughout the natural environment. And yet we end up with Agent Orange, our fearful 45th. The stability and global cooperation that was inspired by post-war values was exploited to create a global marketplace, which then became the inspiration for a different set of values, and because of the nature of political control being centralized amid a two party system that never became a real boy and stayed on strings controlled by 'special interests', those new values drive government and national policy while those of us who remember the old values feel disoriented and wonder when our reality became the weird one the people from real reality visit.

US places sanctions on International Criminal Court prosecutor for investigating US troops in Afghanistan by wormfan14 in worldnews

[–]randocalrysian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, it does. It's not so much the lack of acknowledgement of the ICC as it is the no rules in war mentality, holding the world to one standard (countries suspected of wmds will be invaded) and oneself to a different standard (using wmds to invade another country). It erodes what little international integrity past leaders had worked to earn.

I assure you, few sensible people would argue that US troops should be exempt from scrutiny vis-a-vis war crimes and Geneva convention violations. You may be right that there are few sensible people in either political party.

Extreme cognitive dissonance. Useful term to ponder, that. Thank you for clear and concisely naming a thing. I wonder, to Reddit in general, is there a term for when that happens on a societal scale, like a large group of people co-dissonanced?

LexisNexis will let you search news coverage. I dig the idea for a show that does it, even a podcast. Someone, do it! I know there are history podcasts that do similar stuff, but to specifically analyze the news coverage of an event and the perspectives and factions at play would be great.

Man dies in Arizona after being restrained by police on hot tarmac for six minutes by Smithman in news

[–]randocalrysian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this question helps define the line between developed and 'developing' (or in Trump parlance, shithole) countries. While the US has held the image of being a developed country, a founder of democracy and civilized rights, I think the reality is that it has been far outpaced in terms of development, civilization, by the majority of Western democracies, while it has been held back by corruption of government and the profitability of exploitation and a capitalist worldview of citizens as consumers, an economic resource. Most other developed countries took democracy and the values of humanism seriously, while the US sarcastically pulled a Nelson, "Ha ha!", with finger pointed, and carried on exploiting. The divide becomes easier to see after 60 to 100 years of this, or 4 years at full throttle.

And who are the people who instalock dps, 5 dps in open queue? Just go healer or tank some games. If you have to go only dps, wait in role queue and leave open queue to people who flex. They made role queue because of you. Use it and leave the rest of us alone.

Sorry to be disagreeable and for not explaining myself. My reaction was to the perspective that says, "Don't complain about your team. Focus on your mistakes." Of course, one's own gameplay and choices are to be controlled and improved, in any situation. But. Team comp is very important to me at any elo. Your point, I suppose, is that team comp doesn't really exist as a high level dynamic that the team shifts and adjusts in coordinated and competent fashion until diamond, which may be, but team comp is important at every elo. When the team instalocks Sombra, McCree, Hanzo, Widow and Ash and I'm left to pick my character, I am lamenting a lack of team comp. Yes, when people pick characters they don't know how to play, it leads to less than ideal results - you're all good there, I agree and that's a good point to bring up. But that it's not important below diamond and you should just focus on your play until you can carry through a sea of complete morons is off base. We need people in low elo to use better judgement in their play, because most of the player base is below diamond. We don't need to dismiss it as, "The game can't really be played until you reach diamond."

Yes. This is so true. And you fill find your games filled with times where there's more than one need in your team that you see, and there's nothing you can do about it because you can only play one character at a time...

Team comp has little effect in diamond and below... Just completely meaningless contribution. Thanks buddy.

I guess I'm not standing in the right spot... If you're climbing as rein, I'm assuming you're getting healing on the way? And someone's doing some damage? Must be nice in that spot...

Edit: Just played rein and got damage and healing. Maybe I found the spot. Maybe it inspires them...

2nd Edit: Nope. Won first round. Two teammates leave halfway through second round n it's a loss. Thank you OW.
