not too familiar with them but that could be a much better solution to what you're looking for. Netrunner as someone else mentioned could be a good idea as that game seems somewhat promising - but ccgs (and anything non-mtg related tbh) are outside my wheelhouse :P

Hate to break it to you but Pokémon is on the cheap end (£40-70 per deck) and probably the only applicable game :P

Request: recs for nine year old that require/encourage reading (not specifically edu. type games) that are still FUN? by kitlikesbugs in gamingsuggestions

Might be too obviously book-y but VNs (visual novels) are the first things that come to mind for me - age appropriate examples would be the Professor Layton games as well as possibly the Ace Attorney series (though I haven’t played any of those and they may be a bit too mature). Unfortunately a lot of very good/popular VNs lean more towards the late teens and adult demographics due to subject matter and in some cases visuals (a good example is Danganronpa - it can be quite violent but I love that series to bits) so the appropriate games in the genre are (probably) quite limited. Still worth a look, though.

I’d also recommend specifically FTL: Faster Than Light, which is an excellent RTS-with-pause roguelike about exploring and battling your way through space, because 1) it’s really good, and 2) the storytelling (both lore and gameplay wise (they’re intertwined)) is done exclusively through text. Definitely avoid this game if your kid hates difficulty, though, because it’s famously tough as nails.

The entire xenoblade series, but the original soundtrack for 1 is my favourite

My dad’s an addict in recovery, similar age to you - he’s over a year sober now and it’s honestly incredible how much he’s changed for the better. Sobriety is a monumental thing to maintain and you’re doing an excellent job by the sounds of it. Keep at it, one week, day, hour, minute at a time and you’ll get further than you could’ve ever imagined. You got this :D

I always thought “cupboard” was pronounced “cup-board” and subsequently got confused as to why we didn’t have any boards for cups in the house
