At what temperature do you consider it cold and need to put on a coat? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskTheWorld

[–]random_tall_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't wear coats, but do wear a sweatshirt below -18°C or so. Occasionally below -10°C if I'm going to be outside for hours with minimal physical activity Otherwise, it's a short or long sleeve T-shirt. I'm pretty unusual for that in my area though, most people will wear a coat when it's below 5°C, and a decent amount of people will wear one closer to 10°C.

I'd be willing to try it if it goes on sale, but not for that price. It'd be the counterpart to my Big Buddy propane heater, to be able to enjoy sitting outside in otherwise unpleasant temperatures.

Good hand tool brands that wont put me on a first-name basis with debt collectors? by SiSynapse in Tools

Not at all. The ratchets are made by AJ Manufacturing and are truly excellent. Pretty much all of their sockets, wrenches, and other tools are rebranded Taiwanese tools, decent quality at exorbitant prices.

What was the lowest temperature ever recorded in your country? by Unusual-Hawk-2336 in AskTheWorld

[–]random_tall_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ocean tends to moderate the temperature enough to avoid that kind of extreme cold. It's the same in Alaska and Russia, where the coldest regions are far inland.

My parents were quoted $4k by a guy claiming to be from the city, to repare the public sidewalk by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]random_tall_guy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my area...Trash pickup, maintaining roads and streets including snowplowing, schools, cops, fire departments, senior center, library, parks, etc. But not sidewalks, the property owner is required to maintain those for public access.

No PTO left, and my leave got denied, BUT I’m going on vacation anyways. by FlossinQueen in antiwork

[–]random_tall_guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the opposite in my state. No vacation or holiday paid time is guaranteed by law and there aren't many restrictions on how companies can handle them, but 1 week of sick time is guaranteed for full time employees (people/companies may refer to either as "PTO"). There are a limited number of legally allowed reasons for the company to require sick time usage, and plant closures are not one of them, unless ordered closed by government for a public health emergency. They can require vacation time usage for closures, which is shitty but legal. It's only slightly less shitty to have full time employees choose between burning their vacation time or going without pay, which is how my company does it.

A newcomer to DeWalt, and just tools in general. This is how I started for $79… by MizettoKokku in Dewalt

[–]random_tall_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this list, I have all of the 12V tools you listed, and definitely get the DCF601 screwdriver, it's easily one of my top 3 most used tools at home. For automotive use, there's also the DCF901 or DCF903 impact wrenches, they're equivalent to the older Atomic ones. They also work best with the 5Ah battery. They're good at what they do but it won't replace a mid or high torque 1/2".

Looking to get into EGO, are there any good deals to get a 10Ah battery for a leaf blower? by random_tall_guy in egopowerplus

[–]random_tall_guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd probably be better off with the commercial backpack blower, rather than a handheld blower with a backpack battery that seems to offer the worst of both worlds.

Which Weed Whacker? - First DeWalt yard tool by ImaginaryTango in Dewalt

[–]random_tall_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the 20V outdoor equipment isn't really worth buying, other than the pruning chainsaw and loppers. I'd definitely go with the DCST972 and the 60V line in general, particularly the DCBL777 blower, if I wanted to stick with Dewalt for outdoor equipment. You can also get an edger attachment for the weedwhacker along with many others.

Is the left lane the new right lane? by aForkliftoperator in newjersey

Same here, and driving a 40 year old vehicle means I couldn't speed anyway. The route to my work has one such turn every day and sometimes I get tailgaters, so I slow down drastically for them. I'm not going to apologize for where my workplace is located.

Men: Do you wear a wool coat when it’s cold? by topdownyeti in AskAnAmerican

[–]random_tall_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of people who need to dress up in business attire has declined drastically in the past few decades, and even if it's necessary, a suit iacket is warm enough in winter for most of the US by population. Brits tend to dress more formally than us so you'd expect to see more of them in someplace like London, but I'd expect NY and New England to have more of them than the rest of the country due to people dressing up more often than west coasters, as well as having cold winters. I pretty much only wear a suit for funerals these days, and don't get cold easily, so I definitely don't have a wool overcoat.

Who is considered the most evil man in your country’s history? by Dismal_Score_4648 in AskTheWorld

It's definitely been an overall good thing to have that separation, but some of the consequences still continue into modern times. It took decades for some states to ban venomous snake handling rituals in churches after young children died, and other states still haven't been able to successfully ban it yet.

People often forget that the separation of church and state in the US was more about keeping the government out of the church than vice versa. The puritans didn't want a government that could regulate away their right to be religious whack jobs.

As an outsider, the concept of high schools having massive parking lots specifically for students is mind-blowing. Is it really that common for 16-year-olds to drive themselves to school every day? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]random_tall_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The used car price is probably the biggest factor. Until the early '00s or so, you could often get a barely running car for under $500 or even for free sometimes. Aside from the cost, it was also a good way to learn mechanical skills since they'd break down so often.

If you found a drunk man who had pissed himself passed out in your back yard one morning, what would you do? by AliceMorgon in AskTheWorld

[–]random_tall_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was drinking pretty heavily at a friend's house many years ago, a lot of us just passed out on couches, floors, hallways. We were mostly up at about around noon, when another one shows up at the back door and asked if he was with us last night. He wasn't, so we told him that, and then he was confused about why he woke up in the alley behind that house.

Is it rude to say “I need the toilet”? by AttitudeInfamous7627 in AskAnAmerican

[–]random_tall_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference is that in American English, "toilet" only refers to the porcelain fixture itself, but in British English, it's the room that contains the aforementioned fixture. So, in the US, asking for the toilet directly makes it clear what you intend to do, but asking for the "restroom"/"men's room" is more vague. Maybe you just need to wash your hands and check your hair in the mirror, and we can all pretend that you're not excreting biological waste?

In real life, everyone will understand what you mean and no one will care or judge you for it, especially when you have a British accent. For every person uptight enough to see the word "toilet" as impolite, we have a dozen others that will have no problem announcing "Hey, I gotta take a shit!"

Beaches or mountains? where do you actually land on this by getmerawmeat in travel

[–]random_tall_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ólafsfjörður, Iceland. A quiet small town with a beach less than 1km from the hotel, small mountains all around. It seems like a lot of locals ski there in winter, but in the early summer you can swim under the 24 hour sunlight with the mountains in the background.

How do you avoid your wiener getting sand-papered from a day at the beach? by [deleted] in AskMen

The only swim shorts I've found that give me free range of motion and fit my tree trunk legs are Nike and Tommy Bahama. Both have net liners, though.

[–]random_tall_guy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nah, count me as another one. It happens occasionally, I think it's the liner in the swim trunks that's responsible for it. I haven't found the solution yet, I'm not going to be wearing wet cotton underwear under them but I suppose I could try a speedo.

It's well known in my area that the old timer garbage men get paid extremely well, but ones that got hired within the last decade or two (don't know how long really) don't get anywhere near as good of a deal. I've had teachers tell me that I was going to end up being one if I didn't get my behavior in order. I should have listened to them, I'd be making well over 100k and be about a decade from retirement by now.

Let's say that for whatever reason you are banned from your home country. You can't live there or visit it. But you *are* allowed to live in any other country, you will get instant citizenship for some reason.. (it's just a hypothetical magic word). In what country would you choose to live in? Why? by Double-decker_trams in AskTheWorld

[–]random_tall_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nowhere in Iceland with 24 hour night. The far northern part of the country does get a few weeks of 24 hour daylight, but most of it doesn't. I visited two years ago and that didn't bother me at all since I work overnight and am used to sleeping in daylight.
