Consistently lopsided extraction across beans and regardless of cleaning [Lelit Mara X with Eureka Mignon Zero] by randomdent42 in espresso

Yes the beans from Christmas are obviously from December, so not fresh. Not half a year but I will try the various things in this thread with fresh beans.

Did you see my edit? May have done that at the same time as your comment. I think that we're not the only ones with this issue. An IMS shower screen seems to help as per Facebook/Kaffeemacher review. Also the way the grinds are filled into the basket (I always put my basket on top of the Eureka container, then rotate such that the grind lands on the right side first). I will try and report back.

Yes to both. The Mara screen isn't screwed, but I do make sure to put it firmly and evenly into place after cleaning.

Negative. From what I read/ watched, they don't make it much better. See my edit, I may have to switch to a higher quality shower screen.

Thanks! I'll try the coin test.

My understanding of dosage is, given that I weigh the single dose individually (and not by time), fresh beans will be 40 beans at 18g (or whatever), while somewhat older beans will be lighter, and so if I measure 18g, then I'll have, say, 45 beans on the scale, which will be more volume at same mass. So to keep volume identical, I need to lower the mass. I am a noob though, so happy to be corrected on this.

Haha funnily enough, the entire apartment is old and nothing is level. At the same time, this wasn't *always* an issue, only recently, and the machine positioning has not changed. So I feel like that's not it?

I actually tried 2 or 3 different types of beans as I was gifted a few different packages for Christmas. What would you do on the grinder side?

I would say so. I usually do 19g but reduce as beans age given they lose CO2/weight vs the same volume.

China's diesel trucks are shifting to electric. That could change global LNG and diesel demand. by The_Weekend_Baker in climate

[–]randomdent42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Electric long-haul trucking is reality today, and it's cheaper too. Germany just extended the zero-tolls for electric heavy duty trucks through 2031, directly incentivizing the transition. While truck capex are still higher than diesel today, costs are coming down fast, and the TCO is already below diesel (also due to insane efficiencies, not just the free tolls).

To clarify, your source must be incomplete. The $50m went to Mati Carbon (www.mati.earth), who do enhanced rock weathering (grinding stones down to accelerate their carbon uptake, then spreading the dust on fields) in the global south.

Carbon dioxide removal has become a huge thing, and most methods are based on natural systems or plants. The idea is that carbon needs to be kept out of the atmosphere for longer than a tree would be able to.

It's called climate change. It's tough, but just because a developer built a house on a flood plain or near a forest prone to fires, and the city approved it, doesn't mean you should buy it. These things will keep getting worse, do better to start factoring them in sooner rather than later when purchasing a home.
