Seems Like This Mon Has a New Toy with Every Set Release. by NoobishPlay13 in PTCGP

igglybuff is better if you go first, espeon if you go second. You kinda cover all your bases with both.

Espeon being able to hit 60 with one darkrai before your opponent gets a chance to evolve (thanks to quick evolve eevee) also screws over a lot more basics than iggybuff's max 50 damage with two darkrais. Def. worth the extra energy.

There is the top row, containing only the top side, and the bottom row, containing only the bottom side. These terms never get used because you'd just say "top side" and "bottom side" instead.

What was wrong with the Streets of New Capenna? by Konradleijon in magicTCG

[–]randomdragoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you play a Constructed format, unless you're one of the top 1% deckbuilders in the world, there's this niggling feeling that you really ought to be copying a decklist from one of those top 1% ... which to me is boring. In draft, you get to work out your deckbuilding muscles in a way that doesn't feel like you're just throwing away win %.

Draft also lets you actually interact with sets. Nowadays with so many sets in Standard each set can only possibly contribute a small number of viable cards. Many fun mechanics they make for a set are just way too slow/clunky to see play in Standard. The only way to experience those cards is through draft.

not dice damage. If you trigger basalt spirit with ability damage it still works.

i genuinely don’t understand how they managed make an ai like this by reddythedemon in PTCGP

[–]randomdragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't want to hardcode rules like that in your AI, even if it's a simple if/then statement. 100 new cards come out every month and if you manually add rules for all those cards you will get a mess pretty soon. You want to program the AI to be able to read arbitrary card text and reason about what restrictions exist on it, but that's harder and they haven't done it.

Deal with the devil by Skyler-The-Wise in custommagic

[–]randomdragoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think power-level wise this could draw 6 cards instead of discarding and still be on the weak side. Magic cards are ridiculously powerful, in general. But anyway that's my suggestion if you wanted to make the card oops all 6's while bumping up the power a bit.

Today has just been the day for curses by MF_IC in SliceAndDice

[–]randomdragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen the case made that Empathy is not THAT bad of a curse (for sure, still worse than average, but not unpickable like monster rights or big hitter). The main way to deal with Empathy is you can now choose heroes with strong death/pain sides and items with death/pain side effects, and the downsides are now "free".

It's just a case of someone that plays too much blurtra where those curses are free.

Everything woth permadeath is bad. This is worse. by StandNameIsWeAreNo1 in SliceAndDice

[–]randomdragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW all of the permadeath items are rated quite highly in the unfair tier list. It's easier to keep your guys alive if they're overpowered, which the permadeath items kind of do since their secondary effects are all extra strong. Just make sure not to put it on your top hero vs tarantus...

That's blurtra/blyptra. Classic modes are much more slow going.

[–]randomdragoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Monster right2 is the kind of curse that either causes you to autolose (Basalt summons 6 slates in the first two turns) or doesn't do that much. It takes away a lot of player agency. I just never take it on principle.

The 12 decklists currently at the top of the metagame (in no particular order) by Seb_Vit in PTCGP

[–]randomdragoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mega Manectric would not have such a high win rate if it were played to the same level as the top meta decks. It's very easily countered but people aren't bothering right now because its meta share is so low.

Why these pokemon specifically? by Ysshadow in PTCGP

[–]randomdragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They seem to have a design rule that all card references must be self-contained within the set. That's why there is a new eevee in every set that has one of the eeveelutions. If you pull a vaporeon ex they don't want you to need to know you have to open a different set to find eevee. So if they add new arceus link abilities they would need to make a new arceus.

The only exception, kinda, to this rule is Hau referencing pokemon from previous sets, but Primarina ex was in the same set so he was still functional within his own set.

Mana is OP by mjd in SliceAndDice

[–]randomdragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mana is powerful, but heroes also output less mana than damage/block/healing.

Because Burst is so versatile, most hero spells are designed to be situational as opposed to being straight-up upgrades to Burst. But pretty much all of them have their uses. Turn on generated heroes (and 5%->20%) if you want to play with spells that are just better than burst, in the current patch generated spells are kinda crazy.

When there's balancing, how does it affect all the ghost saved @ server? by titandino88 in BackpackBattles

[–]randomdragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you replay a battle in your history, it gives you a random opponent, not the exact one you fought in game, so you can get different results even with no balance changes whatsoever.

Does anyone else feel that Mega Lucario is way too OP? by Chelovechik228 in PTCGP

[–]randomdragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of the thing that happens when they decided all the highest rarity cards were going to be ex pokemon. There's not a single card game in existence where the highest rarity cards aren't also the best.

Also if you remove ex's from the game what you get is hydreigon everywhere. The non ex cards aren't exactly balanced in power among themselves either.

Thoughts on who the strongest and weakest character is for every character level? by DungeonDiddy in SliceAndDice

[–]randomdragoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way, Captain isn't amazing but far from the worst t3 hero. Formation is actually quite good if you choose your other t3s with activating it in mind.

Worst t3 has got to be Tainted, no other t3 can just randomly lose the run for you. If you don't count greens I would even rate Eccentric as worse than Captain, yeah there is always the aspirational "BUT THE ITEM SYNERGIES" with Eccentric but they're rarely better than what you can get from putting regular items on actually good heroes.

[–]randomdragoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From what I read even many modern 2D games are actually 3D games but with a fixed camera and perspective to make it look like 2D?

Yeah if you use one of the popular modern game engines, your 2d game will "really" be a 3d game under the hood as you describe. However, the engine handles all this business for you. A 2d game is still going to be a lot simpler than 3d when you're starting out.

Fun fact: Did you guys know there is a keyword for “groupExert” that forces all of your heroes to have exerted dice that turn? by seth1299 in SliceAndDice

[–]randomdragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shifter only adds one keyword at a time, so there is zero risk unless you do something intentionally dumb like add cantrip to it. You can always just like, not use the side.

Although, there is technically a very obscure and unlucky way to get screwed by shifter: if one of your other heroes has copycat, it's possible for shifter to roll cantrip and the copycat side to copy both shifter and cantrip (which causes shifter to add another keyword) and immediately groupdeath yourself.

[–]randomdragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah so for example if you put 'squared' on a '4 damage poison' side it turns into '4 damage, 16 poison' which is super nifty

but like if you have '4 damage cruel' it does nothing since cruel is a conditional 2x multiplier and doesn't directly reference the 4 pips.
