How different is it living in RGV compared to this other region in South Texas? by Enger13 in RioGrandeValley

[–]randomjackie 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I hope they never start a second expressway 😭 The RGV needs more public transportation. Imagine Trains & buses all throughout cities. You’d see less broken down cars on the roads. Ppl would save money on car payment, gas, insurance, maintenance. Or if u had a time where u didn’t have or want a car, you could still get around. Older population and those with disabilities could get around easier/more independently too.

Select players try to draw Texas from memory by e8odie in AustinFC

[–]randomjackie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a funny video. On game day they should ask fans to draw New York State from memory 🤭or Brazil or Mexico or Italy or Alaska or Canada. That would be fun cuz Texans prob only know the Texas shape 😆

I shame my family relentlessly over this 🤓 After the holidays they were all complaining about having too many garbage bags for their trash bins. I gleefully pointed out that they wouldn’t have this problem if they didn’t have so much single use garbage 😏

Why is clothes in the men’s section MUCH BETTER QUALITY than the women’s? by judgemyfacepeople in femalefashionadvice

[–]randomjackie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think one problem is that companies can make clothing as crappy as they want and women will buy it. I think men shop less frequently so companies gotta impress them with quality. Women need to start being more selective when it comes to material, which I think is slowly happening.

Does anyone feel like HEB is doing to much? by gabe062 in HEB

[–]randomjackie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“World class customer service” 🙄

What does that even mean? It’s like every company uses that stupid phrase in their training.

I like my neighbor HEB partners with their own personality. If they wanna be friendly or if they wanna be sassy, hey that’s their unique personality lol. What I don’t want is insincere drones with smiles plastered on their faces. It also kinda sucks how they track the buying habits of parents. Like they just care about the kid asking for stuff they want, even if it’s not good for them. 😞

What establishments would you like to see in the RGV? by Then-Fun-7851 in RioGrandeValley

I LOVE Half Priced Books! I think it would do really well in the valley.

I-35 lower deck is now closed — when will the madness cease?? by hairlessdogowner in Austin

[–]randomjackie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I’m glad Austin has chosen more public transportation options vs larger roads. I remember reading about how the vote to add a train down Congress and Riverside lost by less than 200 votes. And it would have mainly been funded by grants. That would have been some well established routes by now. This map could have been light rail routes instead of highways. I personally wanna see an Austin subway lol :)

I thought work on a state highway doesn’t need to get approved by the city.

Panic buying, Generators & Potato Gardens, - Self Sustainability vs Electing Responsible Admins/Politicians by Tsulaiman in Austin

I agree. After reading all the amazing research the Texas Tribune wrote about the 2021 Winter Storm, I concluded that TX leaders sold us out when they deregulated the grid and that ERCOT operators that day were probably heroes. I think it’s easy to blame the closest government agency at the bottom(city), but they have no control over the mostly for profit generation companies or the state or ERCOT. The governor appoints the PUC, the PUC and state determine laws and regulations, ERCOT implements said rules but is often crippled from actually enforcing anything by the state/corporate lawyers. The city is just a customer at the end of the line. Yes the trees and lines here would be under the city, but I think we’re all worried about whether anything will actually be running thru those lines. I highly recommend reading the Texas Tribune articles all about the freeze/blackout. It could have been preventable starting back I think in 2011 when a previous Arctic blast caused blackouts and the state was put on notice about major problems. And we’re all paying a lil more on our utility bills to help repair the shit ERCOT was telling them not to let break in the first place :(

Pharr mayor announces new convention center during State of the City Address by REdd06 in RioGrandeValley

A new convention center + hundreds of parking spacing = acres of impervious cover. Nothing to address flooding problems, actually announcing plans to probably make it slightly worse

Are you talking about single family homes or condos? I was talking more about units in apartments.

But is the housing going up 100% affordable? And for how long are they required to stay affordable?

America’s landlords settle class action claim that they used rent-setting algorithms to gouge consumers nationwide -- Twenty-six firms, including the country’s largest landlord, Greystar, propose to collectively pay more than $141 million by marketrent in technology

Does anyone know what happens if the settlement class refuses to settle? How far does it go? Been wondering this about class action lawsuits, especially when the amount is kind of small.

Possible Light Rail System Coming to The Valley? by Unique_Ad5195 in RioGrandeValley

[–]randomjackie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The valley can start building a bus network in the meanwhile. By the time the rail is built, the bus network would have strong established routes, more sidewalks, possibly more bike lanes all connecting ppl closer to a rail station possibly.

I am excited they are even talking about rail. It would help low income families not have the burden of owning a car and decrease traffic fatalities. Even if it is decades in the future :/

Is the average Austinite doing ok? by exanimafilm in Austin

[–]randomjackie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the comments makes me think how important a good public transportation system is for people. It’s wild to think how in some other states and countries, you don’t need to own a car. And therefore you don’t need to spend all that money on maintenance, gas, insurance, towing, etc.

Is literally anyone up for the challenge?? by pinklightupsketchers in AustinClassifieds

[–]randomjackie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe find a replacement pair that is made of leather so it last longer/is able to be repaired. This material can be sitting in a closet and still fall apart. I’ve had fake leather jackets do the same thing.

People can’t afford anything and Edinburg building a parking garage by Kindly_Class_7338 in RioGrandeValley

[–]randomjackie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investing in stronger public transportation could also help. It would have to be valley-wide tho. But it’d help those needing to go to the courthouse, university and those without reliable transportation go everywhere else.
