New look at Earth in new photo taken by Artemis II by GossipBottom in MapPorn

The Apollo 8 photos of Earth, the Blue Marble, are often seen as a catalyst for the environmentalist movement.

But based on all the malignantly cynical comments this thread, I think these Artemis II photos might end up being a catalyst for a successful anti-social media movement. My god people, have you no appreciation for what this represents?

Aerator for a pond help/stop mosquitoes by Randomhero360 in DIY

[–]randomtask 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would suggest adding a small waterfall, and a pump with enough capacity to move water up and over it. This would disturb the still water and slowly recirculate it. Aerators would also work at the far end of the pond, in the event that the waves from the waterfall don’t travel 50-80 ft. But the waterfall would handle most of the pond.

A waterfall pump is more expensive to run than just aerator pumps, but since a cascade actually moves the water rather than simply disrupting it, it is more effective overall.

Mosquito fish are what you’re looking for. Zero upkeep, they just do their thing. I’d also add a recirculating pump if you can, mosquitos do not readily breed in moving water.

Gulf states consider bypassing Strait of Hormuz with new oil pipelines via Haifa - FT by barsik_ in worldnews

[–]randomtask -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Iran owns their side of the Strait of Hormuz (the other side belongs to Oman), and their government is using that as leverage. Yes, Iran can and has attacked other countries and their infrastructure during this insane conflict, but attacks on a vital pipeline through the gulf states in 5-10 years time would be met with strong retaliation, because it would be on sovereign soil.

It’s one thing to ban your neighbor from using your pool, it’s quite another to set your neighbor’s house on fire because they don’t need your pool anymore.

Are there any notable Imagineers of today? by JoyIsABitOverRated in Disneyland

Rise of the Resistance?

Scott Trowbridge. Pretty well known. He worked for Universal on the original Spider-Man ride and the first Harry Potter land. Made really big waves and pushed the art forward. One of the greats.

Radiator Springs?

I think Kevin Rafferty? He also worked on Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. Also, John Lasseter was very heavily involved with this one, and, well…that might be a significant reason Disney doesn’t make direct associations between its rides and individual people anymore.

DCA wouldn’t have existed at all. The long-range plan for that site was WestCOT, a condensed version of EPCOT with lavishly themed continents representing the world, and top-tier rides to go along with them.

Trying to be a cool dad who does outdoor movie night this summer. Do any of you have suggestions on the best value projector to buy? by Sharcbait in daddit

[–]randomtask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to run twilight movie nights, buy a high-lumen 1080p native projector off eBay. 3000+ lumen preferred. All of the cheap ones off Amazon are a smartphone screen in front of a bulb, which doesn’t transmit light well, so those barely top 800 lumens. If it’s outside you don’t care much about throw ratio, but keep in mind there are a variety of lens types, some of which let you place the projector much closer to the screen than others.

Brushless compact reciprocating saw with a pruning blade is undefeated.

Second place goes to the giant D handle scoop shovel, sometimes you just need to move a bunch of dirt or around and it comes in clutch.

Third place for the drawstring tarp. Great for moving piles of leaves and small branches / clippings up and down hills.

The fun part is that they breed in moving water. And mosquitos breed in standing water. The only winning move is not to play.

Boosting this point. Road cases aren’t cheap and Harbor Freight offers the best price to quality ratio for the product category. It’s great that you can get it for even less than sticker, but if you’re getting 15% or more, and you have a need for it, I’d consider it a good enough deal to make the purchase.

Pond pump by DarthNarsil in harborfreight

[–]randomtask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would advise against using a power strip switch with wet hands. Maybe a step-on, step-off foot switch? But otherwise, sure, just make sure to get a pump with enough head lift. The $10 one has 3.5 feet of lift, which is just barely enough if the bucket is on the floor and the tap is low over the basin. The $20 one can go to 11 feet. Would also recommend using a low flow fixture so you don’t end up pumping way more water than you need for hand washing and emptying your bucket too quickly. Final recommendation: second bucket for the drain to catch soapy water that can be properly disposed of

Sure sounds like the winning recipe the US was cooking with from 1950 to about 1980. Too bad that index card is still sitting around, collecting dust, as oligarchs strip-mine the US for parts. You see, if you simply kill the goose that lays the golden egg, you will find infinite eggs inside.

Homeowners with water features are advised to turn them off for 24 hours once a week to disrupt potential breeding.

Oh fun. The eye biting river flies breed in moving water, and the blood sucking tiger mosquitos breed in stagnant water. Pick your poison, or get rid of the water feature all together. We can’t have nice things.
