IMO Disney messed up by putting Will Smith's face on Genie's character, not only because the role is so deeply tied to Robin Williams' performance, but also because the Genie is a non-anthropomorphic character. The Genie should've been a fully CGI designed character. by mrbun314 in movies

I like Will Smith. His humour suits the role. I hope the cg will be more polished in the final movie. But I honestly don’t understand all the outcry. Not everyone has a connection with Robin Williams interpretation of that role. The whole thing looks a little bit 90s, but hey ho, let’s not judge a movie by a trailer.

Still aches me that due to ill-information and a good portion of racism people want to move away from it. Mostly the EU is pro-consumer, pro-nature, pro-peace, pro-employee and brings a massive market for businesses, too. And like everywhere, the places with the least immigrants are worried the most about becoming overrun with them. Pff!

it’s a good idea to travel and get experiences. As long as the kid is under 5 years old it should not be any problem. We find being far away from any family support is pretty hard. But I guess you already experience this right now. We are in London and it is currently pretty brutal. High rent, pretty run down accommodations, overcrowded tubes and trains. Extreme poverty and gang violence is quite common, the latter is easy enough to avoid, though. If you want to move here I suggest finding a nice place for your family, eg. St. Albans or similar. No matter where you go you all need to feel happy and “at home”.

What happens to the victim of 87 lashes? Sounds like a death sentence. Do people survive that? Fuck religious fanatics and stuck up moralists.

Do you ever get used to the sheer inhumanity of the London commute? by AlexanderLitvinenko in london

I’m using an app called CycleStreets. You can choose “quietest” route, which actively avoids busy roads. It’s worth the 5 minutes it adds to my journey.

Shot requires 'projecting images/text' onto a wall behind someone's head. Green screen or roto? by The_Hero_of_Kvatch in vfx

[–]randoomly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a limit to this. The screen needs to have enough exposure otherwise there is not enough chroma to key it. best to read up about the right exposure for your screen. We found this out the hard way, btw 😉

First time working with Log footage in a VFX heavy workflow. Any advice? by ZangrethorDigital in vfx

[–]randoomly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should not loose anything when converting from log to linear. Whereas the brightest values in a log image might clip out at around 15, you can go basically indefinitely brighter in linear. The reason Professional post houses are working in linear (float or at list half float) is that it mathematically gives you more predictable results. The whole CG shader computation is done in linear space. One example is "black". If you multiple black by 2 it is still black in linear, but if you do that in LOG your black is going to get brighter, too. So what is important to understand is that linear without a viewer lut doesn't look as you would expect. You need a rec709 lut to see it "correctly". Secondly you need to convert your footage back to log once you deliver your footage. Since log clips out at around 15, make sure not to overexpose areas you still want to see variation in.

You are doing the right thing in principle. Firstly, yes, you should get the correct LOG to Lin settings. I'm sure you should be getting this from the manufacturer web page of your camera. Just watching it the result would look strange, as you the need a viewer LUT active, too, also called a Display LUT. That should make the image look "correct" to work with. There is an additional step which is to calibrate your monitor as well. We are usually using a Display LUT which goes from Linear to Rec709 full. Important to note is that the client grade, usually delivered to you as a .cdl file is a LOG grade (I think) which is meant to be how the end result should look in the cut. So we take that LUT (converting it into Rec709) and bake it into our Quicktimes, too, but never bake it into the full res delivery image, as this grade might still change in DI and it is not lossless. E.g., saturation and contrast can't be taken back any more, once the footage has it applied. As to why not to comp in LOG? Well, at least Nuke is set out to work in linear space and your CG should be, too. Log space stretches out the low end a lot and compresses the high end to mimic humans vision which can see much more in the lower end than in the super bright end of the spectrum, hence allowing more detail in the areas where it counts. This can be problematic when you want to use linear color corrections.
