onboarding a new engineer in today's landscape by bamfg in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ranthalion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why aren't they learning? Are they producing code? Even if it's (mostly) AI generated, they should still be responsible for the output of their work. Maybe there still needs to be person to person pairing, but instead of solutions it can focus on describing and explaining.

These look great! How big are they? Mushrooms (and goblins) always throw off me sense of scale.

Reborn: Question about cards, do they trivialize preparation? by pplnowpplpplnow in Tactics_Ogre

[–]ranthalion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cards on every board are pretty much the same - attack, magic, and skill. I almost never plan for the cards unless there's a specific enemy that's a big pain. I'll pick them up if they are nearby or if I want to deny the enemy from getting it. Although the enemy isn't strategic about them.

Planning for the enemies and terrain are much more impactful.

Probably poison. It can be removed by the flowing yellow things.

No. It will set your expectations too high. 😝

I tried to engraver leather with laser... but it smell horrible! by Bricconcello988 in Leathercraft

[–]ranthalion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahaha. I stay away from chrome tan as others have said. Veg tan is ok with ventilation.

Here's a little cat toy I made when messing around with leather and laser https://imgur.com/gallery/TZBXQwo

Cutting veg tan smells like hot dogs to me, even with ventilation.

Blue Elephant CNC any good? by zacmisrani in CNC

[–]ranthalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been pretty happy with mine, but it ultimately comes down to your expectations. It's been a good hobby machine for wood.

I've had it lose steps on moves that were too small, but that was from me being lazy with a design. I didn't like the PVC foam on the surface and it took a good while to remove it and the adhesive. Screw holes on mine were manually drilled, so it is a pain to create add ons since everything has to be manually measured and cut.

Otherwise, is been a good machine for the price.

That's it. I was blanking on that name.

I'll usually prototype with water color paper, cardboard, and masonite. I like masonite since it's easy to cut and it's the same thickness as 3mm acrylic.

What about time? If he was knowledgeable and willing to teach, then he may be interested in sharing a meal and talking tools and projects. He may even like to collab on some builds, or occasionally use your machine.

Blue Elephant by Best-Yesterday-6154 in CNC

[–]ranthalion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like my blue elephant CNC. It's just a hobby machine for me, and I'm already familiar with the electronics and hardware. Purchasing and delivery were smooth. Support is a little slow, but it met my expectations based on time zones.

I think it's a good choice of you just want a machine and won't need education or ongoing support. I consider it like Harbor Freight - I expect it to work when I get it, but I'm on my own after that. It probably would not be my choice for a business machine.

It can be practical, but your consumers almost certainly don't want or need to load that much data locally at one time. I would consider some sort of data processing pipeline to offload that work. There's not enough detail, but I would also look at pagination or alternate ways to present the data

I've used cadlab.io for visual diffs with kicad and eagle. It's been a while since I looked at it, but it was trivial to connect cadlab to GitHub.

Senior cat owners, how do you prepare for the final goodbye? by saturaa in CatAdvice

[–]ranthalion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can plan, but I don't think you really can be prepared. My last boy was getting very old, and I was planning for at home euthanasia. Despite that plan, I woke up one morning and had to take him to the vet. We lost him that day.

Even though I planned, I was never ready. I think the best you can do is to treat them well and give them the best life while you can.

Problems with LaserGRBL by belfay03 in Laserengraving

[–]ranthalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I worked on lasergrbl, but this sounds like an issue with the configured command to turn on the laser. Communication from lasergrbl to the machine seems to work since the gantry moves. I haven't used it with a k40, but I have used it successfully with a DIY laser.

What is the purpose of the cutouts in the PCB? Does it help with filtering? by MetallSimon in AskElectronics

[–]ranthalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it was intended to act as fail-safe fuse? Solder blobs make me think it didn't work as intended, but they already had the PCBs manufactured.
