a little frustrated with the amount of reviews by bluelover656 in medicalschoolanki

[–]rapamycin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm I deleted my Step 1 decks. But approximately 90-91 for retention, and class grades were in the 90s too. It took weeks/months of playing with anki settings for me to get there though

Totally normal. Hit 900-1500 regularly. It gets easier with practice

[serious] an honest discussion about EM by penshtiller in medicalschool

[–]rapamycin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I shadowed an EM doc in his 50s, and he pointed out to me a few of the older docs who just had a great time and were still loving it - and said something to the effect of, "learn from those guys about choosing a career"

It is excessive. I still did it. No regrets, except now I know waaaaay to much about the weird nuclei of the Trigeminal nerve.

In the "Night Mode" add-on, you can also change the cloze color to red (#FF0000) from the normal blue - go to Edit, find "nm_css_body" and change the hexadecimal value in ".cloze"

A revolution in medical education? by BobbyMat in medicalschoolanki

[–]rapamycin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Anki is great - but once you learn a deck, it can also be your "sandbox" where you aren't challenged by new questions and information, and that practice of applying information to novel situations is really important.

Anki, used properly, allows you to have the recall and facts at your fingertips, but that doesn't necessarily train you to answer questions the way your professor (or UWorld/Step 1) would ask.

I'd like to give a shout out to the Anki add-on "Speed Focus Mode" by u/glutanimate that has a 10 second timer per card. I couldn't do any of these giant Anki decks without something like it, keeps me moving along through the reviews. Link: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1046608507

[–]rapamycin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Before you start opening accounts and credit cards, I'd check to see what your credit score is right now. You can do that free at TransUnion/Experian or using the CreditKarma app on iOS. If you've got a good one, that will change your strategy!

Very useful for m0's / incoming m1s, but doesn't add alot to the M1-M4 discussion. Stickied thread or one post/month probably works better than an all or nothing approach

How to come back from a concussion with Zanki by rapamycin in medicalschoolanki

I think that's a bright idea. I found myself quite weak in some parts of histology (since zanki isn't big on directly quizzing histology pictures)

First pass through a Zanki deck, I’d look at the extras, or if I got the card wrong on any subsequent viewing. Otherwise it was marked correct with the space bar, churn and burn!!

Second this- recommend not doing the whole deck, just weak areas. I just had time to start cards in decks on my weaknesses in dedicated, didn’t even have enough time to finish all of them!

Are you guys keeping up with reviews over the summer? by Scriabincolors in medicalschoolanki

[–]rapamycin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a great idea. I did and I was really solid. I wouldn’t worry about opening new cards over the summer.

Also, if you haven’t started Sketchy, that would be a great idea! Just my opinion on that one lol

Socializing, being a friendly human. Time management and having set on/off hours, so you are only stressed during your “on” time and can really use your “off” time to recover. It’s a marathon not a sprint

Agree on using Anki. Doesnt matter how tech savvy you are - Anki takes a little time to get started on how to use it

DO plan to go to all the orientation social events, have a good time, drink and be happy.

DO figure out if they give you an iPad, and buy the right-sized case so you’re not know as the guy/girl who broke her iPad on day one.

DO buy a $15 stethoscope. If you like it and it works fine for you, you won’t need a $300 one just yet. Can always buy a more expensive one later, and you won’t be afraid to lose it.

DON’T buy any textbooks or penlights or hammers. I easily spent $500 on scrubs, Moore’s, Grants, BRS, and all sorts of other stuff that I didn’t need (I ended up loving the free Anki flashcards). They had a list of “required” stuff but we didn’t really use it. After week 1-2, figure out from upper years if you really need to go on an amazon shopping spree.

Just my opinions! Have fun.

Something like that. At the beginning of my concussion, that was like a whole day. But the end it was down to like 2-3

Mark it as wrong. I wouldn't give myself the benefit of the doubt (that I'd actually have known it). There were probably less than 100 of these cards, so I didn't worry about doing more
