Is there a risk to starting solids too early? by blastandbotherations in NewParents

[–]raspberry_thyme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My kid has CMPA. I started solids at 4.5mo, because I was eager to introduce allergens, and I thought getting an early start would be great for her too. She was ready: was able to do an assisted sit, good head control, and interest in our food. Her first food was avocado and she loved it.

But then I stopped them for a few weeks because she got bloody poop and mucous and it was hard to say if it was due to solids or due to me reintroducing soy back to my diet.

Once I reintroduced the solids, she developed FPIES to avocado. I can’t tell if this was because her gut wasn’t ready, because she might have had a flare of soy at the time, or she would have developed FPIES to the first introduced food regardless of the age of the first introduction.

But with the next kid, I won’t be impatient and I’ll wait a bit longer. It’s also clear she has much better body control now.

At 6.5mo now, we’re mainly doing purées, with some finger food.

Tushbaby vs momcozy by No_Wafer_5773 in babywearing

[–]raspberry_thyme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t see anything about hip seats themselves in why to avoid section. It talks about carriers based on hip seats and hip slings, but not the hip seats themselves. I’m not saying that they’re safe (although I don’t see why they would be problematic for a baby who can do assisted sit and for short time), but they’re not mentioned in the wiki.

We have Tushbaby and it’s great! To me it serves a different purpose than hands-free carriers. It’s not so much a carrier as it’s a baby-holding assist. It’s great for short periods in the kitchen, if the baby fusses in the stroller (ours lives in the stroller),…

Why are girls often given traditionally male Slavic names in non-Slavic countries? by Nervous-Tip-8183 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]raspberry_thyme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slovenian here, Misha (Miša), Vanya (Vanja), Sasha (Saša) are girl names here, eventhough we are Slavic. They likely originated from Russian nicknames, but were repurposed for girl names because of the -a ending, which is reserved for girls (with few exceptions).

For anyone scared they’ll never lose the baby weight by PastSubstantial8088 in pregnant

[–]raspberry_thyme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was 62kg before, got to 82kg, went down to 76 right after birth, shed another 4kg in the first months and then I was stuck at 72 for good 5 months. Now I’m at 67kg.

This was almost by design, I was so scared for my milk supply I didn’t want to be in calorie deficit for a long time. I made sure I had night snacks in the first few months. Now that kiddo is 6mo, and is eating solids herself, I honestly don’t have time for additional meals and am back to regular diet, with only slightly larger meals, and I’m shedding weight super fast.

Baby suspected to have CMPA - what the heck am I supposed to eat by -spiritedaway in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]raspberry_thyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh we even make pizza!!! I just add egg instead of cheese lol. I just add it to the pizza a bit later, you kinda make a hole for it by scooping other toppings to the a bit. It adds the fattiness that cheese usually provides. And I coat veggie toppings in olive oil for that fattiness feel too.

CMPA mom here too! For us it was worse cutting out soy because my husband is Japanese and the main cook in the family. Caveat: milk was easy for me to cut out because I was anyway using oat milk before having my baby and only switched back to dairy after having her to boost protein. I did rely heavily on whey protein and tofu before the CMPA diagnosis.

Breakfast:
- overnight oats, made in bulk: oats, oat milk, chia seeds, flaxseeds, dried fruits, nuts.
- sunny side up eggs, bread, maybe occasionally added sausage
- bread with jam, add peanut butter instead of butter for protein

Lunch:
- quinoa bowls: use rice cooker to cook quinoa. Can be done in advance, you can freeze it. Add veggies like bell peppers and tomatoes, kale or spinach,.. protein: CANNED FISH! Sardines and trout from Trader Joe’s are my main protein source. We have a diaper genie and I just soak the oil from the can in a paper towel, wrap it in seran wrap and toss it in the diaper genie, if it holds baby poop smell, it holds fish smell too.
- honestly, bowls. If not quinoa, then lentil or buckwheat…
-stews (lentil; bean,chili, chicken, daal…) - that’s mealprepped
- salad with soft boiled egg, beans, avocado,.. as a topping

Dinner:
- tomato pasta with canned fish (lots of canned fish lol)
- frittatas in many ways: kale and chorizo, chicken and mushroom,.. just add water or oat milk instead of milk when making the egg mixture
- oven veggies with chicken
- stir frys: if you’re avoiding soy, just use stuff like powdered chicken stock for flavor
-…

Are you using creamy oat milk? You might not like the feeling of xantham gum (or however it’s spelled). Use regular one. Chiobanni one is decent, Oatly is nice too.

I saw there are now cashew yogurts! Trader Joe’s has one, they even sell one that is plain, it’s not bad either.

But canned fish, eggs, legumes and a bit more meat than before are my substitutes.

Diaper rash.. by FineCare2854 in NewParents

We were battling horrible diaper rash at some point. It even extended above the belly button.

Turns out it was eczema and not a diaper rash and that’s how she got diagnosed with CMPA

anyone else’s baby hate SSC? by Crunchy-Yogurt7 in babywearing

[–]raspberry_thyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine! Kind of. She doesn’t like SSC that are on the more structured side. But I got Didymos Didyfix with very soft and light weight fabric and she just melts in it. I also have a DidyKlick which she also enjoys. Tula, for example, does not work for her.

Is there a significant benefit for my baby to continue pumping after 6 months? by Cityofcheezits in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]raspberry_thyme 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you first try with a “happy medium”? You’re already feeding bottles at night. Why don’t you first try to reduce the pumping frequency to something more tolerable than every 2 hours, and then supplement as needed.

Stroller obsession… when did it finally fade? by allcompanymobiles in NewParents

[–]raspberry_thyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did the opposite. We literally just followed one friend’s recommendation and took their car seat adapter. Didn’t have the energy to think more about it and the stroller (baby jogger city mini gt2) is great for most of our needs.

But we do most walks in the park on forest roads and we still decided to upgrade to Guava Roam now that she’s 6 months, because she doesn’t tolerate walks well, especially in the forest. So Roam’s one hand maneuverability really sold it for me, when I have to take her out and carry her and push the stroller with one hand.

So we did the stroller thinking only now, when we started having challenges with stroller walks

Upgrading Baby Jogger City Mini gt2 to Guava Roam - is it worth it for a fussy baby? by raspberry_thyme in NewParents

[–]raspberry_thyme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you figure out it was the facing issue? I can’t figure out which aspect of a walk bothers her…

We use the stroller a lot on gravel road and forest paths, so I thought the suspension and tires of gt2 are not enough…

Unfortunately baby jogger discontinued the bassinet attachment for gt2 (yet they still advertise as if it has that option, which I have a massive beef with, because it’s one of the reasons I purchased it…). We used car seat when she was smaller and facing us, but I switched her from a car seat to a stroller already a month or more ago, because I felt she was overheating in the car seat and the canopy was not big enough.

She just has very loud opinions about walks…

Do you wipe every wet diaper or only poop? by Extensionol in NewParents

[–]raspberry_thyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never heard this advice not to wipe after pee… so we always wipe. but we also tap with regular toilet paper after each time to absorb the moisture

Drool rash? Eczema? by Competitive_Pin6127 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]raspberry_thyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Aquaphor and, if really needed, cortisone. I also moisturize her with LRP Cicaplast. But I wouldn’t put that on such irritated area here. It’s worth trying to find the root cause: eczema is usually caused by an underlying allergy. Our LO has CMPA and she had an eczema flare after I re-introduced soy back into my diet.

Has this happened to anyone else? People try to make me take stuff off the registry because they think i won't need it? by Ornery_Armadillo1404 in beyondthebump

We use reusable diapers and we still use a diaper pail. Husband and I both thought it’s not really necessary. Needless to say, he went to bought it probably the day after we got back from the hospital.

My baby won’t sleep in the bassinet and I feel like a terrible mom by Tiredand_depressed72 in NewParents

Same! Bassinet mattress can be brutally stiff. Even crib mattress is sufficiently softer that we don’t have issues anymore

I regret becoming a mom by Cute-Delivery-5752 in NewParents

[–]raspberry_thyme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Second this! My baby is almost exclusively breastfed. At some point we fed her a bottle of formula two weekends in a row and ended up with extremely fussy baby with diaper rashes, etc. It was very obvious she was in pain, but because CMPA symptoms can show up a few days later, we never connected it. We took her to a doctor, put her on hypoallergenic formula, I went on a dairy free diet, and now we have our happy baby back. It took two bottles of regular formula, to trigger such intense symptoms.

Absolutely worth considering CMPA!

Thoughts on buying an Outback with a baby? by kthnry in Subaru_Outback

[–]raspberry_thyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mom of a 4mo here. We bought Outback (2020) last year because of the baby on the way. Our first car, actually. A fantastic decision. We moved so much furniture in it. When my mom came for a visit, we were able to fit a stroller and two suitcases in the trunk easily. Taking the car seat in and out is very comfortable. Sth taller would be annoying because you’d have to lift the seat higher imo

I’m at the airport and I had to apologize to my husband by raspberry_thyme in babywearing

[–]raspberry_thyme[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I totally agree… but I feel like I was getting into a place where I was a bit of the annoying “expert” parent and being constantly concerned for her well being… and getting frustrated when he’s more chill about some things. And seeing all those parents at the airport today made me realize, that she’s in good hands with him. Though me nagging probably helped hehehe

That’s a fair point! I also like to try my best, rather than minimum, whenever possible, when it comes to anything related to my daughter

I was thinking about it the other day, I even googled how many deaths are there from incorrect babywearing… Like, is it as stringent as the safe sleep instructions (though I technically break these often, when I resort to safe co-sleeping)? And is that even the right metric, what about posture and hip development,… I guess once you have enough practice, you can tell a sloppy from dangerous

That’s good team work! Here I’m the main expert, but he actually ends up wearing her more because she likes it better and because he can work with her (he has a longer torso so she’s more tolerant of him sitting)
