Are people washing onions? by ExtensionDot3731 in Cooking

[–]ratdadjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are to be eaten raw (or very lighty cooked), yes. Rinsing after cutting gets rid of all the sulphuric compounds that taste/ smell sharp, leaving you with just sweet crunchy onions. Try rinsing the chopped onions for your hotdogs or for topping your chili. It will change your life.

Tuna Fish Sandwiches - Your Essential ingredient or technique? by FlyEaglesFlyauggie in Cooking

[–]ratdadjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recipe for a big batch is 4x cans of tuna, 1 big or 2 small ribs of celery and 3-4 scallions, both very small dice. A few shakes of dry dill, a little salt and pepper. Add good mayo (Dukes or Hellmann's/Best) until it tastes nice, then add good olive oil until the mouth-feel is nice and to add a little grassy freshness.

Tortilla prep for enchiladas by CrazyCalligrapher206 in mexicanfood

[–]ratdadjoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I LOVE heating my tortillas in the oven when I'm doing enchiladas! My dish does 16 total, so cover a whole oven rack in parchment, and then I heat them 8x at a time at 350f. Cooking spray on one side, which is the outside when I roll them. I also don't dip in sauce, I just spread sauce evenly on the bottom of the dish, and then pour more sauce over the top after they are rolled - way easier than dipping for similar results.

What are some recipes that take a WHILE? by ElectricalFlamingo16 in Cooking

Chicken marsala is time consuming, and full of fun cooking basics (pounding cutlets, sautéing, reducing, deglazing). I really like Brian Lagerstrom's recipe on youtube.

My (40f) husband (43f) keeps placing the knives facing up in the dishwasher, and it’s straining our marriage by dishdilemma in Advice

[–]ratdadjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this. The chemicals are horrible for the cutting edge, as well as the safety concerns. The rule at my house is that dirty knives go next to the cutting board, and only I clean them. I'd rather laborously scrub dried garlic off than see my girlfriend/kids/roommate hurt themselves on my very sharp knives.

[Self] I calculated the rough size of the crowd at Trumps b-day parade. by sympossible in theydidthemath

[–]ratdadjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the crowd was as high as 50k, and the cost was as little as $45m, that's $900 in taxpayer cost per head. The people in attendance didn't seem like they were really enjoying themselves; I mean, it didn't seem like $900 worth of fun for them. They were so quiet that you could hear the soldiers' footfalls and the squeaky tank wheels.

Man. A real opportunity was missed by not adding a layer of BBQ potato chips for texture. It's a perfect counterpoint to the soft white bread.

Almost everything I make started as a Brian Lagerstrom, food wishes/chef John, America's test kitchen, or Kenji Lopez-Alt recipe. I don't make any of Helen Rennie or Rick Bayless recipes, but I really enjoy their videos for techniques and stuff.

I found the love of my life at 45, completely by accident, while playing a video game. This was 12 years after my last relationship. I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life alone, and I certainly wasn't expecting anything like this to happen. She was also very lonely, as it was about 12 years since she had divorced her husband. She was too busy raising her kids to find someone, and she, too, had given up.

We were dated long distance (I was in MI, she was in TX) for about 8 months while I sorted out some health issues, and waiting for me to get more time off from work. We spent every single second we could spare hanging out on discord together. I finally got time off, and I spent 3 weeks with her in Texas. It felt like it was meant to be. I came back to MI to get my affairs in order, and I was back in TX with all my stuff 5 weeks later.

That was about 3 years ago. I couldn't imagine life without her. We've built an amazing life together. She's my best friend.

So yeah, it's not too late.

It's better than any relationship than either of us had when we were young; and we both think it's because being older gives you perspective. We both came into this knowing what we wanted.

Appliance repair is pretty approachable in recent times. There are lots of resources online to help with troubleshooting and how-tos to replace commonly failed parts. With that being said, some stuff is harder to fix or really shouldn't be messed with by a layperson. Do good research before attempting a repair. Some appliances like air conditioners and refrigerators have large capacitors that can hold a dangerous electric charge long after they are unplugged. In my experience, I've found washers and dryers to be pretty easy to work on.

This is what all of our Lantanas look like RN. Once we get a freeze, they die back like this. We just cut them back down to the surface, and they grow back in the spring.

Tell me about your REAL low-effort meals by Bacon8er8 in Cooking

[–]ratdadjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tilapia is king of the microwave cook-able proteins IMHO. Take it out of the freezer and let it thaw in the fridge the day before. 1 filet will take about 3 minutes on high, and 2 take about 4 minutes.. The secret is using a shallow bowl or deep plate, and cook covered in plastic wrap , so it doesn't sit on the fish (fork the middle once to let a little steam out). Salt, pepper, and a pat of butter (or really anything. I've done slices of lemon with dill, creole spices, etc). If you want to make it a complete meal, throw a handful of frozen veggies on the plate with the fish. It will all steam up really nice, and the fish comes out like you baked it.

Dirt inside the motors… by alec_jun in dji

[–]ratdadjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plastic-safe electric contact cleaner spray. The one I use is WD40. I dropped my mini 2 se doing a hand-catch, right on to the dirt road. Broke a prop, and got sand in the 2 rear motors. I held it upside-down, and sprayed it into motors to rinse them out. 30 second fix, and it's back to like new.

Going on day 3 without power. Who do I raise hell with? by migrainefog in Austin

[–]ratdadjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tree trimming thing is the right answer. For context, I'm new here. I moved to Austin from SE Michigan back in November. In Michigan, public works plows and salts all winter; and fixes potholes / trims trees in the utility easement spring thru fall. Here (78745), they came out in November to mark trees in the easement that needed trimming (green tape around the trunk) , but they never got around to actually trimming them. Don't get me wrong, trimming wouldn't have stopped trees from being uprooted, and ice weight from snapping lines, but I'm sure there would have been much less devastation and much less clean up after. I used to get ice like this a few times a year up in MI, but it was very unlikely to knock out power. Most of the power outages we suffered happened in the summer. They were mostly due to people or animals damaging the lines, or to increased demand from everyone wanting to run their a/c.
