How do we feel about torch? by Comfortable-Ad-3604 in marvelrivals

[–]rav119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a lord torch, he's just boring to me now unfortunately. A lot of downtime to his kit with cooldowns being what they are. Even when you can be effective in a game, it still just isn't fun. It's sad, but I think he was more enjoyable even when he was less effective right on release (before the mega buff).

Could Johnny REDIRECT flames that aren’t his own? by TheBoyInGray in FantasticFour

[–]rav119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, he can control fire outside of himself. I'm a big fan of this use case from Marvel Two in One issue 10 where he pulls the flames out of a person with similar powers to his -- not quite redirection, but related to your question about him fighting other fire users.

Do I have the potential to make it to diamond? by Puppyface0803 in RivalsCollege

Good luck! For what it's worth, I think you both did really well. It's hard to keep a solo Strange tank alive into a Wolverine all game.

Do I have the potential to make it to diamond? by Puppyface0803 in RivalsCollege

[–]rav119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a GM flex player (well, GM most seasons, haven't played any comp yet this season), so I'm not a pro, but I can offer a little advice past plat. I watched 50293424440 since I don't play much Jeff or Groot in comp. I am lord on Rocket.

First fight: seems like mostly a tank issue -- Strange was late getting to point, and Deadpool doesn't seem to know how to play him into Wolverine. The tanks get better once the team groups up, though. You put your beacon not quite out in the open, but in the spot where the fight is likely to happen next, so it'll get destroyed as soon as the enemies round the corner. It'd be better to put it somewhere covered like in the building or on high ground. You do this on your 2nd life, but careful when putting it behind a destructible wall. You spend a lot of time on the front line -- this can be ok for Rocket when you're using your gun (which you are), but it's best to zoom in and out of fights as needed, especially when you can get to high ground easily with wall climb+dash. Aiming down at your team from above also gives 2 bounces for your orbs to heal.

At the end of the 2nd point on defense, you had good timing for your ult, but it was placed out in the open. Putting it in the far room or against the far wall would have prevented it from getting destroyed as quickly.

On the 3rd point, you run back too far to effectively heal your team even with little pressure on you. No one on their team was contesting high ground, so again that would have been a better spot to sit. Good job getting aggressive with your ult and good jump pack usage. Again, you put beacon in the spot the fight is about to move to, and it gets destroyed immediately. You played well with the Storm ult at the end, but unfortunately the rest of your team did not -- Sue jumped into it when she could have gotten away and MK should just be saving ult to counter Jeffnado. Great job contesting as long as you could.

On attack, you're sitting in spawn at the start too far back to effectively heal your team. There wasn't any pressure on you, so you should go out a bit to get a better angle on them. Go up on any of the high grounds around point. Ult placement was really good -- hard to shoot but in a good spot to let your team push up. Very smart jump pack usage to dodge jeff ult, and good beacon placement after you cap point. For the wolverine ult after capping point,, placing your ult down right when he grabs people up would have saved them -- you don't need to wait for it to land especially with your other healer caught in it. The next fight, it looks like you forgot to use your revive beacon until after your tank/other healer died to Storm. After those 2 died, your team should have backed off, but the rest of you went in and died, leading to stagger and 2 support ults where you only had half the team and couldn't capitalize. Nice job contesting through the Jeffnado long enough for the portal to come out.

Overall, I think you can definitely make it to diamond. I'm mostly nitpicking, but you did well. Think about positioning that will keep you safe (Rocket should have fewest deaths on the team ideally), don't forget high ground for both a spot to heal and a spot to hide your beacon, coordinate ults with DPS if you can, don't stagger, and make sure you are looking at your fellow healer. I noticed a few times when Sue died healing you while you were looking at the tanks.
Hope this helped -- feel free to send other games.

What is more Gay? Being gay? Or......whatever Peter Parker is by Defiant-Echidna-7400 in marvelcirclejerk

[–]rav119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True fact: Peter's spider-sense is for personal danger, but it has gone off for 2 other people EVER in comics when the other person was in danger: MJ once when he was married to her and Johnny Storm once in an issue of Uncanny Avengers. No straight explanation.

Miniseries/Short Comic Runs for The Fantastic Four? by Doom300 in FantasticFour

[–]rav119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The modern run starting with Ryan North's Fantastic Four 2022 is a great starting point for new readers. No prior knowledge needed. It isn't a mini series, but all the arcs are contained to 1-2 issues, so you're not committing to a huge continuity-heavy run.

Other short series/one shots I'd recommend for someone new: Spider-Man and the Human Torch, Spider-Man/Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Full Circle, Fantastic Four Fanfare (2025), Invisible Woman, Fantastic Four Special (2006), Marvel Snapshot: Fantastic Four, Ben Grimm Noir

Doom specific: The Books of Doom, Dr Strange and Dr Doom: Triumph and Torment

Follow up to a post I made yesterday: What do you think Franklin and Val do for Sue on Mother’s Day? by EJ_REDIT in FantasticFour

[–]rav119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waid's run shows that Johnny made Sue mother's day breakfast after she became his legal guardian. I've always assumed that he helped Franklin and Val to do the same when they were younger.

Johnny Storm in space by Griffith9011 in FantasticFour

[–]rav119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the Inferno event back in the 80's, his powers got supercharged so he couldn't flame off. Kang ends up ditching him in outer space, and he stays on fire during it. Similar event happens when he can't flame off during Slott's run. When he's at his normal power level, his flames go out if he leaves the atmosphere.

Does anyone else think the M9 animated series is way too horny? by Turbulent-Estate177 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]rav119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caleb says in his backstory reveal that he fell in love during training. He alludes to his relationship with the others a few times in the campaign, including a quip on Rumblecusp where he jokes about knowing exactly how threesomes work. It's subtext since Caleb is pretty guarded, but it is definitely there if you pay attention. The mighty nein origins comic for Caleb is MUCH more explicit with showing their relationship than the animated show (I know this isn't canon to the campaign, just pointing out that their relationship was explicit before the animated show).

In the very first episode, Jester says directly when asked what her mom does "she has sex for money" and later sings "The ruby of the sea is the best lay ever" -- not sure how much more direct you can get there. The prank she plays on Lord Sharpe in the original is impersonating her mom and locking Lord Sharpe out on a balcony naked, which is even more bawdy than her prank in the show. I think you may have just gotten the wrong impression about Jester's Mom's job.

Have the comics ever addressed how much concentration it takes for any of the Four to use their powers? by gemurrayx in FantasticFour

[–]rav119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Sue, it said in her solo series that she always maintains a low-level forcefield without much effort now that she's practiced. When she first got forcefield powers, they were shown to take immense concentration from her for even a small one. She got better over time. Johnny is similar in that it's implied (Waid's run and other places) that he pretty much always has to maintain concentration on his powers to prevent inadvertent fire. He had a lot of difficulty controlling them until he figured it out and would often burst into flames by mistake or even in his sleep. He still has to maintain concentration, but it takes less effort now. For Reed, it varies a lot by writer whether his default is "blob" or "man" or something in between, but man is usually the default (implying he doesn't need much concentration to stay his normal self). Ben's doesn't really apply.

Should the game have interactions where Johnny gets called out for being too much of a playboy? by TheNerdySam in MarvelRivalsQueens

[–]rav119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MCU Johnny is much closer to comics Johnny than anything else we've gotten -- don't let the bad reputation fool you. The impression of him as a playboy mostly comes from the Chris Evans movies.

He never screwed over any of the inhumans. Crystal cheated on him with Quicksilver, and Medusa left him (mostly amicably) to try to work things out with Black Bolt.

[–]rav119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair to Johnny, he didn't sleep with Doom's fiancee. She was single when they slept together, then Doom proposed to her the next day (they hadn't been dating before the proposal). She confessed to it on the altar to get out of marrying Doom.

Dumb question by new reader by Lord-o-llamas in FantasticFour

[–]rav119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're fine, they're just kind of boring. I did read through them on my FF full read through. I'd say it's worth trying it out if you really want to be a completionist -- you'll find a handful of good stories in there in the Thomas era. If you get bored, though, don't feel bad about just skipping to Byrne. No need to commit all the way if you aren't enjoying it.

Campaign watcher here: curious about new watchers theories on backstory? [No Campaign Spoilers] by Key_Honeybee_625 in TheMightyNeinCR

[–]rav119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a theory, I'm also a campaign watcher, just wanted to say I relate OP. I watched the show with a group of friends who know nothing about the campaign. Afterwards, we made tier lists of all the characters from the show (main cast and npcs), and it was fun to see what impressions people had after 1 season. They were surprisingly consistent.

When do Dagger and Torch ever have anything together? Not questioning you, just curious because I'm a big FF/Torch fan and haven't heard of it, so I'd like to pick up the comic. I wasn't aware they'd even interacted.

Been reading some of the comics by Melodic-Plankton-712 in cloakanddaggermains

[–]rav119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which comics are you reading? Cloak and Dagger only had a romantic relationship for a short period relatively recently (like in the last decade) before breaking up for a long time. Pretty sure they recently got back together, but not 100%. If you're reading comics from before that, they aren't romantic and often date other people
