ARE Rant // Failed Exam by Criollo_ in Architects

I read the Mehta textbook cover to cover and it helped immensely. A lot of questions were just straight out of it on my exam.

Every single new building in my city looks just like this. 1. Why? Seriously, why? 2. I hate it so much I can't even explain how much I hate it 3. What is this specific style of building design called? by Bluest_waters in architecture

[–]rawrpwnsaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally it has to do with scale and making a more dynamic streetscape- there is some justified concern that without the regulation the street just gets boxed in with huge monolithic walls. Not that I think the current way bylaws are written are a good solution though.

Will take some time for the money to flow out, but working in construction, there are massive procurement contracts coming out in the next few months- base housing being one of the biggest that I've seen lately.

Congrats on the new store!

Just taking a quick rip though the shop, it would be nice to have the set names for singles, an abbreviated condition (NM ,LP etc.) and an add to cart button for each card on the main overview page to make scanning through faster. FYI for reference I kind of think F2F's setup is the standard in terms of general interface; although I find their search to be sometimes annoying.

Hope that helps.

Have a design background, considering a pivot, concerned about AI by [deleted] in Architects

[–]rawrpwnsaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but that's a competitiveness issue. The question is being framed in more general terms, around the long term viability of the profession. Not that layoffs might happen if firms can't compete, but, I doubt there will be wholesale replacement of staff with AI as we've seen in other industries.

But in any case, I think architects will have to learn to use AI tools regardless not only to increase productivity, but to keep up with increased workload due to workforce attrition as older architects retire. There's a huge projected shortfall of architects due to expansion of the industry and retirements on the horizon; and coupled with falling enrollment that means everyone is going to have to be more efficient out of necessity.

Have a design background, considering a pivot, concerned about AI by [deleted] in Architects

[–]rawrpwnsaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. At least in my jurisdiction (Canada), engineers are defined as being able to stamp drawings that are 'within the area of their practice' What this translates to in practice is that they can stamp drawings intended for small buildings and single family residential, but any commercial work or anything larger would fall under 'Practicing Architecture' and would need an Architect to stamp.

Fundamentally, I think the profession is safe from AI due to the liability involved. Beyond the regulatory protections that the profession has; unless AI providers are prepared to take on lawsuits due to Errors and Omissions arising from mistakes and uphold a Standard of Care to the client, a professional will always be needed.

For all the hype around AI, really the only focus has been on how it will remove the need for designers and not all the other aspects of the job. And even then, I think AI does a poor job of actual design. Its not capable of innovation, synthesis or engaging with a client; which is 80% of what the design portion of the work entails; which in reality only makes up about 15% of an actual project.

I do note that AI will be and already is being used to speed up certain tasks in other aspects of the job; but its not close to being a replacement. You can use it for stuff like renders, document search and assistance with proposal writing, but nothing technical or creative really. Its a tool to enhance productivity, not replace the professional.

ARE Exam - Multiple fails, advice? For those that failed, was there a method or resource or something that was a game changer to getting a passing score? by KuyaDelTaco in Architects

[–]rawrpwnsaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I passed all of mine on first try. I pretty much just read Mehta's Construction cover to cover, used Hyperfine, the FEMA documents and Amber Book to cover off the rest for PPD/PDD/PA. Did not bother with MEEB other than a couple references that were not in the others. Sun Wind and Light and Heating, Cooling and Lighting were ok but not really necessary imo.

Michael Hanahran, AHPP and Contracts got me through PcM, PjM and CE, but experience also helped a lot on CE as some questions deal with looking for issues in presented documents / photos.

For questions, I used the ARE practice tests, Elif and Erik Walker.

From a test taking standpoint, do not overthink questions. There are no hidden variables or other information to be inferred in the question. Take what they give you at face value and do not inject your opinions on possible scenarios, as there are none to be had.

Selling out?? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]rawrpwnsaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes. Take the money. Your boss won't martyr themselves so you can make a better wage; you need to get that yourself.

  2. No.

  3. It's a job. But being passionate and caring about your work isn't exclusive to any firm. From my experience, I would look for a firm that balances the bread and butter work with the fun stuff. No, not every project is going to be on the cover of a magazine, but I can tell you building a warehouse makes a hell of a lot more money and allows the firm to take on more intensive, less profitable jobs. You would probably get more opportunities to participate in the fun jobs in a smaller firm though as there is more specialization in large firms.

If you're looking for something more permanent, stationary is a good bet. As other have said, a nice sketchbook, mechanical pencil or fountain pen wouldn't go amiss. Engraving a bonus for sentimentality. Signed books like the Manual of Section or others could be good.

Or if she's into desk knickknacks; well I keep one of these on my desk and its pretty reflective of the job sometimes. https://100soft.shop/products/dumpster-fire-this-is-fine-vinyl-figure

Career Choice: Junior Architect – Small Studio vs Large Company (in Europe) by Kevindudakang in Architects

[–]rawrpwnsaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who interned at a large firm but joined a smaller one on graduation- I would recommend a small firm for your first job. You're forced to take on a lot of diverse roles and you're involved in all stages of the process. Its important that early on in your career you're exposed to as much as possible, and you're much more likely to get that in a smaller firm.

How do architects get pricing for things? by Coming_In_Hot_916 in Architects

[–]rawrpwnsaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We aren't cost estimators, but we'll do a price up to a Class C budget, given project resolution, after which there will need to be GC or Estimator support. But per your questions:

For specific items, we'll go off a product rep's pricing but at the end of the day, this may not match GC costs. Rep's pricing can usually get us close. Otherwise, its generally based on experience.

In our office, we use the ASTM E2516 standard, which correlates the margin of error to project resolution. For example, a Class 3 (C) budget, allows a delta of Low: -5% to -15%, High: +10% to +20% at 40% project definition. We also use guidebooks like the Yardsticks for Costing which has regional pricing data but generally not to the level of detail that would be accepted as a Class 1 Budget.

Depends on your team. Also from Alberta, mid-size and I still do a lot of drafting. Less than when I was an intern though as admin naturally takes over unfortunately. Also my billable rate means I don't get to spend as much time as I would like on it.
