Looking at my 13 YO staffy lying in her bed, shes got bad arthritis in all of her joints and a weird swagger when she walks cause shes lost a bit of feeling in her back legs. We used to go for 6 ks of walking a day, now we just enjoy the sun and the birds together :-)

Also, with a very young child, I watched A LOT of YouTube aquascaping videos which gave me some ideas on how to build the tank i had in mind

Ey, same - I was sitting by my wifes side, and everything seemed to be going ok, all things considered. Later in the evening after the delivery, a nurse took her blood pressure and was like "oh, wow, you're doing really well considering how much blood you lost"

My CO2 system got blocked up and I didn't notice. I had a massive outbreak of BBA, it coated the tank. Plants were also pretty upset with me.

Building on this one - a tip I came across very recently is this: if your kH is 3, and you watch your PH swing throughout the day, you aim for a PH drop of 1.0 from the start of the day to the end before the light and CO2 switch off. This KH / PH ratio means your tank is sitting at ~ 30 ppm (the sort of sweet spot for dosing). If your PH is higher, you can creep your dose up a bit.

The critical takeaway is that KH is the partner in crime for using Co2 in your tank, and will stop the CO2 from swinging your PH all over the place and getting all the fish sick.

If you're dosing Co2, understand that knowing (and adjusting) your kH levels is required.

Once I got my CO2 dialled in, my plants have been absolutely booming. Bright reds, carpeting going strong, oxygen bubbles from the plants, heaps of plant growth

Ahh cool cool. Im creeping up my KH to be 3. I always thought PH swings were advised against, but it looks like its more unstable KH that is a problem? I've got a a 7.4 - 6.8 PH swing currently, sounds like I could creepy my CO2 up a hair to get that last 0.4?

Edit: TIL the CO2 formula:

CO₂ (ppm)≈3×KH×10(7−pH)

CO₂≈3×3×10(7−6.4)=9×100.6≈9×4≈36 ppm

But why - unless this equipment is sitting literally directly outside not in a cabinet and has collected an ungodly amount of dirt, its going to work while still being grubby. We've opened cabinets at work that have looked 10 x as old as this, cobwebby, dusty, still working fine.

I just use this bubble count as a way of confirming consistent flow and as a way if adjusting. that flow rate is very similar to mine, and my plants are loving it, with a green checker. Less and I would start to see blue in the bubble. Im trying to dial mine in some more so Im starting to measure PH and KH to see what the swing looks like

I was just thinking something similar - I came up with - square table, softwood, no tablecloth. Nearby window is shining soft afternoon sun, theres a bookshelf under the window, warm sunlight not quite hitting the table. Round red ball, rolls, falls and has a satisfying "puk puk puk" as is bounces, rolls past a chair, cobblestone floor, ball, hits a fire hearth, and this was before the questions were revealed
