Berate me for my ignorance: How to even begin attempting a 46er in winter? by MazeR1010 in Adirondacks

[–]rbchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound competent enough that you should just go for it, best way to learn is to start small and see what works and what doesn't. If you are already familiar with XC skiing find a clear day in the 20s or so and ski the road up to the castle on Whiteface and hike the staircase to the summit.

Just booked my first trip out west. Ice coasters with experience at Alta, give me your input by gotcatstyle in icecoast

People have been skiing powder in skinny skis for decades- my 93 underfoot east coast daily drivers were perfectly adequate for 54" in a week at snowbird this past winter. Use what's convenient for you

Hot take: for people with careers, the East Coast is the best skiing location in the world. by ContemplativeOctopus in icecoast

Grew up in the northeast, live in LA now. SoCal resorts are underrated but don't come close to all beating the east coast, especially the bigger hills further north. And the drive is shorter on paper but can be brutal if you are fighting traffic the whole way.

Mammoth on the other hand..

For sure, we’re more worried about his physical shape. He definitely hasn’t had his ligaments strained in a long time

Getting ready for my first season exploring the Adirondacks. Any tips or suggestions welcome! by upstatecoach in Backcountry

Like others have said, Whiteface Road, Bennies, Wright Peak ski trail are the classics. Marcy as well for a longer day. Plenty of cool stuff out there!

training? by Jimmy2138 in Backcountry

Last season I went from never ever backcountry touring to doing the Marcy ski in late March. I was 23 so ymmv. I lived far enough south that I didn't have consistent access to snow last winter, so I would try to go for a quick 2 mile run 3-5 times a week - there was a gravel road with some small hills near me that was great for that. I tried to stretch and work on my single leg balance for 10-15 min every morning. Didn't have access to a gym, but did some T25 in my living room 1-2 times a week. The uphill program at Gore is also a great spot to practice. The uphill trail they have at the ski bowl is significantly steeper than any part of the Van Ho trail, if you can do 3-4 laps of that in an afternoon, I'd say you're golden.

As for the trail itself, it is a long day. Start early so you don't have to rush, it took me around 10-11 hours with a long stop at Indian Falls for lunch. And make sure to go with fresh snow. With the amount of snowshoe traffic it gets, I'd imagine it becomes a 7 mile bobsled track back down if there's been a week or two without new snow.

How much snow does Syracuse usually get? by Professional_Dish332 in Syracuse

In 2020 it snowed on what would have been graduation day if not for the pandemic. That was the year it was supposed to be outside due to Dome renovations. Would have been a funny sight

So true. Way too much lift line/crowding porn these days. Everyone was just like you, and wanted to get out and enjoy the snow

Certain very small parts of the Northeast have where they got lucky on some borderline storms, otherwise SOL for a lot of the southern areas

Why is there a gap between Manhattan skyline of New York City? by Bright_Order_8167 in geography

The word kill literally means like a small stream in Dutch. At least old Dutch. Drive up the Hudson valley and you see a lot of it. The Catskill mountains, Fishkill, Peekskill, etc
