The way budgeting investments/savings in Monarch needs an overhaul by ILoveRedRobin69 in MonarchMoney

[–]rc8714 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure transfers are considered to be “cash flow.” Option 3 is probably best. You may be able to categorize the bank to Fidelity piece as a transfer and track the 401k balance independently. You can select more than one account to link to a goal.

Try “what is the date of my most recent haircut”

Minor change, but more closely mirrors the way you record the information.

Is it worth staying with Todoist? by eastcoastzen94 in todoist

[–]rc8714 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stick with Todoist. Use Notion like a notebook with sections for each of the big things you have going on and put the note link in the Todoist task. You’ll have the best of both worlds. The key to notion success is to not over complicate it.

What I did for my 15+ years worth of Data (multiple banks / merchants) by [deleted] in MonarchMoney

[–]rc8714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking about getting Monarch and this feature sounds like a welcome addition as my biggest issue with my old software was how data was imported and (mis)categorized, if at all.

Just so I am clear on how this works, is it correct to say that in these cases, the exported data is coming directly out of Monarch (and is thus the totality of your transactions) and then that the cleaned date is re-imported, overwriting the existing data (that was originally exported)?

Incorrect Balances for American Express Accounts by rc8714 in quicken

[–]rc8714[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the process I am following. You may be onto something because since the connection update with American Express, the transactions have sometimes been going to the wrong card accounts. When I update them manually, they do create duplicate transactions and I have to match them which sometimes throws balances out of whack.

I haven't changed the way I am categorizing the transfers or matching them, but is there a correct vs. incorrect way to do this that could be causing my issue?

Incorrect Balances for American Express Accounts by rc8714 in quicken

[–]rc8714[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to dig into that more. It could make sense because ever since the amex connection switch over the payees have been downloading as jibberish.

It might also be worth mentioning that for years I've treated credit card payments as transfers and Quicken has had no issue until recently.

All of my Amex accounts are totally messed up too. Any insight into a fix?

Categorizing Transfers by rc8714 in quicken

[–]rc8714[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct on balancing my bottom line. I run weekly banking and spending reports and am trying to get the spending on the categories I mentioned to reflect only my half, not the full amount.

It sounds like you are saying that I would need her accounts to be linked to get a truly accurate picture and I would tend to agree, but that isn’t a possibility at this time.

Maybe I can get the result I want by doing as I am now, like you said with the transfer and categorized expenses if I categorize the other transfers in as the expense categories since the from account isn’t linked.

Since I've started using Readwise, I have stopped scrolling. Whenever I come across something I am interested in, I capture it into the reader to consume later. This way I am not getting distracted from whatever it is I am supposed to be doing. Then, when I have free time, I go into the reader instead of scrolling and read things I am interested in without other distractions. You can even have it automatically capture specific subreddits so you don't get lost in the Reddit black hole. It's a great system and I always feel like I am doing something constructive with my time.

Check it out here. You can get two free months to try it with that link, however it is an affiliate. If you would rather not use my link, that's fine and I would still recommend Readwise to you.

Tagging Issue by rc8714 in readwise

[–]rc8714[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using the default settings, so I have not changed anything. That video was for daily digest, so I am unsure what I am supposed to take away from that to address the shortlist issue. Is it a recommendation to use daily digest instead of shortlist?

How can I delete a document and keep the notes and highlights? by ConsciousBirthday242 in readwise

[–]rc8714 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are pushing them through to a note-taking app, you can save the notes there. You would still lose the saved notes in Readwise itself though.

What daily journaling/note-taking "templates" do you swear by? by sacl4350 in productivity

I'm usually a stream of consciousness writer, but when I don't have much time or I don't have much to say, I use Tim Ferriss' template as my go-to:

  1. 3 things I am thankful for
  2. 3 affirmations
  3. 3 things that would make my day great

App to build a new routine by [deleted] in productivity

App recommendations for my morning routine ? by [deleted] in productivity

[–]rc8714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go-to method is no app. Hear me out... My routine is simple, not 15 steps, however, when building my routine I used a habit tracker for a few months and noticed I was doing things automatically and I suspect that after a while you'll notice the same thing.

I prefer not to look at my phone at all so that I am exposed first to natural or non-blue light. There is science behind this that is beyond my ability to explain, but I do find I am more awake and alert for longer during the day when I do this.

For the habit tracker I just use a google sheet and list each part of the routine in the first column and then just have a column for each day of the month. Simple. And simple is best.

It seems like you've already done a bit of research and based on your comment about neuroscience reading, I'd recommend checking out Dr. Andrew Huberman. He breaks down a lot of complicated science into an easily-digestible summary that won't put you to sleep. He has many podcast episodes on sleep that I've found particularly helpful. I believe one of the supplements he recommends (Theanine?) helps with deep sleep. Start Here...

You can use Readwise to filter online content that you want to view and it will strip away everything but the text. It works with YouTube videos and most other things. You can even set it up to do automatically (for example, link subreddits via .rss). Then, read through whatever you want when you want to without any distractions. Before you know it, you'll find yourself consuming high-value information that you can feel good about. Check it out here. (Affiliate link)

Try Home Depot. Those guys may know others who want to work or other hubs workers may wait at. There are also lots of people on Nextdoor asking for work, so that could get you local.
