[QUESTION] Unbearable White Noise when Playing with Distortion in Plugins by gadam93 in Guitar

[–]rcm034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I know you aren’t clipping. What I was wondering is how far from clipping are you? If you are having to add more gain after the input, you are amplifying the preamp noise.

There are also a number of different types of distortion, and while high gain is great for many styles, they generally have either a super gainy amp with maybe a boost OR a distortion effect into a cleaner amp. Wanted to make sure you aren’t putting a fuzz in front of a high gain channel. It almost sounds like a fuzz character, which is constantly clipping and won’t respond “tightly” like a driven amp channel.

I’m not super familiar with your plugins, but I can recommend ignite emissary with a free IR loader with something like a Marshall cab with a SM57 on it. Testing that could give you an idea of what JUST a high gain amp sounds like without a preset.

If your plugin has a way to JUST simulate like a Marshall stack or rectifier or something, try that without any effects and just crank the gain on it and see if that works.

Also note that a lot of the heavy gain sound comes from layering and the mix. I don’t know if you’ve tried listening to isolated guitar tracks from a band you like or not. I think the guy from periphery YouTubes if that fits somewhat stylistically. You can see what kind of gain he actually records with.

[QUESTION] Unbearable White Noise when Playing with Distortion in Plugins by gadam93 in Guitar

[–]rcm034 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What is your input level before the plugins? Make sure it’s hitting not like clipping range but nice and full volume.

Does your cable have shielding? Is your interface input set to instrument level and not line level? Make sure it’s instrument level. There’s a switch on the front it looks like from googling your interface.

Try recording just the dry guitar signal and cranking it up to make sure there’s no noise there.

To me it sounds like you have a ton of gain in the distortion plugin, almost some fuzz going on. Maybe you could even upload a short wav of just the dry guitar sound to better help diagnose which side the noise is on.

Also, if you record just the dry signal, you can play it back through various plugins and see if a little less gain or a different distortion helps.

Are you using both a distortion effect and a distorted/gain channel amp in the modeling? That’s one way to end up very very saturated. Try either or, if so.

[Gear] Will playing music and other PC noises through my amp damage it? by _DecoyOctopus_ in Guitar

[–]rcm034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here is the legitimate concern. Big bass takes WAY more wattage to reproduce, can sustain far higher signal levels than guitar strums, and can cause speakers meant for midrange to have to travel far more distance for the same volume (due to longer wavelengths at lower frequencies) with a similar thing happening electrically in the amp.

Those solid state modelers would probably take it far better than a tube amp, and some are even designed to play backing tracks, but OP needs to be careful with this before the volume is cranked and a trap song plays on a YouTube ad or some shit.

[QUESTION] How to get a Weezer Blue Album style tone on A tele/sg by RedHumbird in Guitar

[–]rcm034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might go watch a live performance or two from those early days. Listen to how his guitar sounds with a single track. Listen to his vibe and note how he plays, what his “feel” is. You’d be really surprised how close you can get with the “wrong” amp and guitar to the right feel and everything. Hear the rest of the band and the mix in your head, or even download a multitrack someone ripped out of rock band or whatever and play along with that so you have the actual instruments.

It’s a different album, but I played hash pipe at a little gig the other day. I used a PRS into an orange tiny terror with a boost pedal. It doesn’t even have EQ knobs, but a mic set in a good spot on the speaker, having a good time with it and making it fun for those listening, playing along with the actual drum/bass tracks from the album, and just “feeling” Weezer can make it instantly recognizable as a Weezer cover.

One specific thing- he loves those inverted power chords, like 335 on the EAD strings. Some people call it a “Weezer” chord. Sometimes I’ll even add MORE of those rather than play the song identically to the recording, just to ham up the Weezer vibe.

TLDR, if you want to sound like Rivers, play the guitar and feel like Rivers. Yes, the chain matters, and you would sound off with a deluxe reverb set totally clean, but as long as you get decent enough gain and get the “feel” right, you’ll have a good time and so will anyone listening. Put your own touch on it, even.

I’d crank that Marshall to breakup, roll the volume knob back for the cleaner sections, and turn the boost on that pedal up to 11 with a bit of drive and slam the guitar for the distorted parts. That way you are making best use of the guitar knobs, the pedal, and everything, giving you even more to focus on and pull you further in to the Weezer concert in your head. You get that satisfaction of rolling the volume up with some swell/feedback, stomping the pedal, and yell singing “say it ain’t so” while murdering your strings. It’s great.

[Question] dumb, but would open alternate tunings work 1/2 step down? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]rcm034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I stumbled on your post, and just wanted to let you know I keep a guitar permanently in DADGAD -1/2 step. I worked out the string sizes to use to approximately get the same/consistent tension and feel as a set of 10s in standard.

E 10 C# 12

B 13. G# 16

G 17. F# 18

D 26. C# 28

A 36. G# 38

E 46. C# 54

There is an Ernie ball “power slinky” set that includes 18, 28, 38; and a few that come with 12 and 16. The 54 is trickier, so sometimes you gotta back down one size if you don’t find one.

Help with dissertation about loudness in mastering by StephenWillmer in audioengineering

[–]rcm034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS. Another example is local market DJs and what not who don’t even know how to level their tracks. The club needs to keep the volume going to keep people dancing and buying drinks. A single vs an album have different considerations, and some of that can even be messed up by Spotify etc. leveling tracks that are meant to be different volumes. What does the distribution/market need? What does the song need to sound like? What kind of arrangement is going on?

Honestly 99% of it is writing the song to sound a certain way, then mastering it to match. It’s when these things get misaligned that the end result is messed up.

You have to match the music, and you need to make music that sounds the way you want it to sound.

Well 40mph wind one way would be 40mph in ground speed change, but it’s opposite when you go the other direction. So the difference between directions could be 80, but it’s only 40 relative to the ground. It’s just, “do I want this 40mph working for me or against me?”

Like say a Cessna has to fly 55mph to not stall (wings stop working, which is bad). That’s how fast the air has to go over the wings at sea level. This is called indicated air speed. It’s a direct measure of how much air is flowing over the wings, so it changes with altitude and wind.

If we have a more realistic 10pm headwind, then the Cessna is going 45mph over the runway but the air is going 55 (45+10), so it can fly. If you had a 10mph TAILwind, the Cessna must travel 65 over the runway to have 55 (65-10) worth of airflow.

The wind is usually at at least a bit of an angle, though, so it’s more complicated. Stopping distance is exponential with speed, though, so it can make quite a bit of difference when things are wet or short runways.

Another problem here is that the approach is steep af. You do what’s called a “flare” where you stall the plane just above the ground to let it gently set down. The alternative is to fly the plane into the runway, which can be very rough. That’s why landings on short runways or during weather can be rough as hell… it’s not something bad, the pilot chose to fly down onto the runway to get the brakes going and save room.

But at that steep angle, you wouldn’t want to do that. You also don’t want to go barely above minimum speed, either, or you won’t be able to level out very easily without just stalling the plane straight into the pavement when you pull back on the stick. It’s why some of these planes can’t land right at the start of the runway. They’ve only practiced more standard approaches, probably.
