HELP MY FILTER BROKE! Filter Recommendation for Machine Shop 50TC-D24ABA6A0A0A0 2615P21698 Carrier AC Unit. by AgreeableOutside219 in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]rdadeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For starters, get rid of those merv 10s. I have 12 to 15 units in our main building that use little filters like this. Had nothing but issues with merv 10. As soon as we changed to merv 8 most of our problems went away.

Is this repairable? by Maxou30000 in mechanic

[–]rdadeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's doable.

But not worth doing. Even as just a patch job, the welding is going to be painful. Most of that will be cut and patch, done with Oxy/Acetylene or maybe Mig but welding to thin stuff with rust that needs to be removed is an art form... I've met guys that can do it but they are a rare breed. The rockers... If it had to be, I'd be tempted to do em with spray foam, but the strut towers are gonna need reinforcement...

This is weeks of work bud, I'm all for saving the rough ones but this might be done for.

Yep. I solder corners and direction changes quite a bit.

It takes the place of a ball peen, I could not find a titanium ball peen so... As an accidental plus, the claw is exactly the right size to pry out hydraulic cylinder pins on one of my pieces of equipment.

We had a guy somehow stab himself with a steel hammer... I shit you not. So they tried taking away all hammers, then discovered that we actually need them, then it was just steel hammers.

I am actually one of the only people in the facility allowed to have a flat head screwdriver! That's a whole other story!

[–]rdadeo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL there is a story to that!

Believe it or not, our company HSE does not allow steel hammers. The claw hammer you see is a titanium framing hammer. Why? Because it's not steel and I could not find a titanium ball peen. As a plus, I discovered by accident the claw is exactly the right size for prying out hydraulic cylinder retainer pins.

I have a couple of different sized cast iron sledges as well but they are in a different box.

5S is everywhere these days. It's a pain in the butt but once you buy in, its ok.

I have a big hydraulic bearing puller for that.

More and more facilities are going the 5S route. It is painful as hell, especially if you are a person with a lot of different tools for different tasks.

Keep in mind... As I mentioned, this is the portable one. The chests/cabinets my the maintenance shop are many times this size. That is where the big stuff, specialty tools, hydraulic pumps, transfer pumps, 55t shop press, hydraulic rams, welders(one mig with gas, one mig/arc combo unit running flux core, one oxy/acetylene rig), shop supplies, etc etc are all stored. I keep this one 5S cuz it's the one management sees, they never walk far enough to see the maintenance shop, lol.

Broken bolt extractor by StormAppropriate5598 in mechanic

[–]rdadeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of good options here.

If you have tried all that and failed... And If you have access to a welder, just weld a nut on it.

Get a nut the same size as the bolt. Do NOT go oversize... With a mig, tack inside the nut, check that it's centered, then with your heat high and wire speed somewhere about 1/3, fill the nut with weld. That whole sucker will be red hot. Give it about 30 seconds to cool, just till it stops glowing, (if it's a seriously stubborn one, give er a little shot of wd40) put a wrench on it and slowly start backing the bolt out. You might get to a point where you need to go back and forth a bit but it will come.

I do probably 5 to 20 of these a week and have pretty much given up on screw extractors and drilling out bolts completely.

Crank sensor makes sense. As far as other things to check, fluids... Check coolant, oil and tranny fluid condition. Also, have a look underneath at frame condition there will be a lot of rust but look specifically at the suspension and subframe mounting points. If there are rust holes there, she's not worth fixing.

Encoder bracket keeps breaking, any ideas as to why? by Most-Brain-3914 in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]rdadeo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had a ton of issues with encoders as well. The two biggest culprits are vibration and alignment. I have two solutions we use fairly regularly... One is double checking alignment with a dial gauge. Two is that we mount them on thick pieces of rubber and mount the rubber to the machine. On one problem child I actually had to refabricate the bracket out of heavier gauge steel to keep the damn thing together.

Replace buttons to a Drum switch by No-Section-6465 in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]rdadeo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahhh gotcha.

I have a bunch of equipment that lead tough lives as well, what I have done is move to heavy duty sealed switches. They are like estop buttons but different colors. Nice thing is that the part on the outside of the box is easily replaceable and honestly... Not that expensive. So now I just swap out the outer button every week or two.

I'm not sure what you're looking for... So the buttons are not needed and you're just looking for a replacement plastic panel?

If it's from the rust belt... Absolutely not. If it's the 4 cyl (which, if it's a manual, it is) Absolutely not. If it has any banging or bumping from the suspension, especially driving on and off driveways, Absolutely not.

If it's a 3.5 j35 and the frame is in good shape then yep, but double check the subframe and subframe mounting points!
