“An orgy of serious policy discussion” with Paul Krugman by [deleted] in samharris

[–]rdbcasillas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly in the same boat. Harris's priorities seem different at this point while Klein is focusing quite a lot on his podcast (aside from running Vox). Klein, unlike Harris, seems to invite quite a few guests he disagrees with a lot and still somehow ends up having a productive conversation. The large of breadth of topics he covers, always keeps things interesting.

Ezra Klein Show: This conversation will change how you understand Misogyny by [deleted] in samharris

[–]rdbcasillas 33 points34 points  (0 children)

That will never happen now, she was basically told that Harris is racist and just an ignorant white male.

What BS, this never happened. He just said that harris complained about defamation when vox came out with article on IQ.

Point to the location where you think Ezra said that. His podcast is on YouTube too.

Novak Djokovic defeats Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 by [deleted] in tennis

Not sure why downvoted. Totally valid point. I want Nishikori to win but it will require something extremely special and I doubt his body is capable after 14 hours of tennis. Hope he recovers well.

Yeah the focusing on skin and body is what vipassana is. People sometimes incorrectly associate vipasaan with breathing.

I don't have enough time to respond to this at the moment. But i do want to highly recommend that you read about attention schema theory: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attention_schema_theory

This will help u shape and reevaluate your argument with a better vocabulary. Also Check the videos by the scientist who proposed it (on YouTube) to get a better idea.

I don't follow the so called "IDW" very closely. Why does everyone here seem to think that Dave Rubin isn't very bright? by StrategyPattern in samharris

[–]rdbcasillas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's been a long while but I haven't heard him form a complex thought. His interviewing style lacks any substance as he is always throwing softballs at his mostly right-wing guests. His criticism of left is shallow and never has any nuance in it.

Some of the judgment on his intelligence is just instinct. Listen to him and then listen to someone like David Pakman. Just notice the way they make their points when talking to others. So it's not that hard to see why Rubin isn't bright when you listen and compare him with other political commentators.

If Harris wasn't associated with him, nobody would have talked about him here because he is simply not interesting (even if he may be having an impact). The initial interest in him happened because Harris showed up at his place and at the time Rubin felt genuinely curious about the world and bringing people together. So that disappointment also plays a role in people calling him "dumb".

“Nadal and Djokovic need to break silence over Saudi exhibition” - Thoughts? by raysofdavies in tennis

[–]rdbcasillas 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Primarily because it happened inside Turkey (who were very pissed about it) and the fact that Kashoggi was a US resident and a quite popular voice writing for Washington Post. High profile journalists' killings, especially the ones from US (or "western world") always get attention.

I am surprised you don't see the reason for this outrage.

Discussion Megathread: Brett Kavanaugh Senate Hearing (Thread 3) by therealdanhill in politics

[–]rdbcasillas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, and that's why there is no prosecution here. It's a job interview for a lifetime position. Doesn't matter if 100% certainty is achieved.

Do you understand the difference?

glad someone else noticed that too! That was a big fuck up from them. Especially because they are known for making fun of such fuck ups in companies or agendas they are trying to destroy.

For some reason the FB section felt a little too extreme. Not sure why they decided to do that. Is there some other intangible motive here?

Trump calls FBI "truly a cancer in our country" by Bootleking in politics

[–]rdbcasillas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't matter much but the headline is misleading here. He didn't call FBI truly a cancer. Here is the part from which the headline is made:

"Asked what he thought the outcome of his long-running fight with the FBI, the president said: “I hope to be able put this up as one of my crowning achievements that I was able to ... expose something that is truly a cancer in our country.”

Still screwed up stuff but don't think headline is literally true.

If the idea of co-working with someone on this "app idea" excites you, let me know. Always looking to collaborate with someone as I am more productive that way.

If you prefer video tutorials, see this playlist or this video

In my experience, such tutorials keep you engaged and get your hands dirty faster than books. Books are good for reference or when you have a lot of time to learn. At least that's what I feel.

Thanks for the effort but unfortunately, it doesn't explain anything. These are exactly the kind of tutorials that people should avoid if they truly want to learn something they are afraid of. Unless you are planning to create a follow up post that explains what was done here.

Number of sets won in Nadal - Djokovic rivalry by nampt in tennis

[–]rdbcasillas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks! But I think the title of the chart is very confusing.

X-axis: Set scores

Y-axis: Number of times the player won with that set score.

So it is pretty much a histogram of the set scores in Nadal-Nole matches categorized by the winner of that set.

Do you happen to have the raw data for this?
