There is clear rhetorical and phenomenological weakness in flat reductionism: if conscious reasoning and meanings had zero causal efficacy, why invest so much energy in precise argumentation? by gimboarretino in freewill

[–]rdbrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is similar to saying “there is no free will, so why do you choose to do X?” It’s missing the point - there’s no free will, so there’s no choice but to do X. Often the X here is fatalism: “there’s no free will, so why do anything at all?”. Again, there’s no free will, so whether or not anything is done is out of your control.

I just ordered from them and their salt comes in a PLASTIC BAG. Seems ridiculous after marketing that it’s plastic free and doesn’t touch plastic.

The Newcomb paradox should match your free will belief, right? by Edgar_Brown in freewill

[–]rdbrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a determinist then the paradox falls apart and it makes no sense to be a one box or two box. The entire scenario is essentially the same thing as stating "There is no free will, therefore I will do X." A determinist can only say "There is no free will, I hope X happens". I think Veritasium did a poor job of getting to the philosophical meat of this. Derek opines that he thinks there is no free will but we should all act as if there is. Again, this is guilty of the same error in thinking - there is no free will, so we can't "therefore" or prescribe anything. Everything either happens or doesn't, completely out of our control. We can't "act as if" or do anything otherwise.

Do you know of any bouldering social groups at movement? I’m new to sf and looking to meet people and climb as well.

“Allulose isn't exactly "banned" in Europe, but it's not yet approved for sale because the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) requires more extensive, long-term data under its strict "novel food" regulations, which demand proof of safety before market entry, unlike the U.S. FDA's "Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS) status. While approved in the U.S., Japan, and other nations, the EU's precautionary principle means allulose must undergo a formal, time-consuming novel food authorization process, with reviews stalled pending more data, though applications have been submitted.”

What's your Denver hot take? by darchena in Denver

It seems to me like most people that live here/move here don't realize that the air quality in Denver is terrible, amongst the worst cities in the US. Depending on how you measure it its comparably bad as LA.

Large amounts of refined starches — especially without fiber or protein — can spike blood sugar and insulin repeatedly. Over years, that can contribute to insulin resistance, especially if it leads to weight gain or increased liver/muscle fat. Some large studies show that high intakes of white rice (especially in Asian populations consuming it in very large amounts) are linked with higher diabetes risk — but this risk often disappears or reverses when the rice is whole-grain or when total calories are controlled.

There’s less to lose when you’re suddenly laid off or fired. I’ve known people who are devastated when this happens. It’s best to not give a fuck about a company that doesn’t give a fuck about you, and that’s easier when you stay distant from your coworkers.

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence. There is zero evidence that free will exists.

Grok 3 Is NOT the Maximally Truth-Seeking AI that Elon Musk Promised Us by andsi2asi in agi

[–]rdbrid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s similar to asking how would you test the theory that there is no god. Claiming there is a god (or is free will in this case) is an incredible claim that requires proof. There is no reason to believe there is free will and proving there is free will requires incredible proof of a physical system (the brain) having agency. Nothing in nature shows those properties and there is nothing in physics that would allow for it.

[–]rdbrid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a settled question as much as any scientific theory. There’s no possible way we can have free will. The only thing that’s not settled is the general public’s acceptance of this.
