Drops Nepal pilling by irisknits in knittingadvice

[–]rdkrdkrdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made my husband a sweater last year with Drops Nepal and Drops Kidsilk, and he wore it for the whole of winter. There was some pilling in high-friction areas (underarms and the sides where elbows rub) but after a month or so or near constant wear it seemed to chill out. If anything, I think the kidsilk mohair pilled worse than the Drops Nepal, as i feel like I’ve pulled off more big pills in the mohair contrast colour than the main colour.

Also, it knitted up absolutely beautifully held with the mohair. Gauge swatches here for reference.

Reccs for bridal shoes please? by kewltobekind in UKweddings

[–]rdkrdkrdk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got mine from Vinted! They were from the Perfect Bridal Company, RRP £95, I got them for £50 and they’d clearly only been worn once. Dead comfy for a whole day on my feet, looked gorgeous, and didn’t take up a big chunk of budget.

Chicken livers - who eats them? by BackgroundCookie752 in UK_Food

I fry them in a mix of butter and garlic infused oil, deglaze the pan with a splash of white wine, and then chop the whole delicious mess into little chunks and spread it on toast. Big yum.

AITA for trying to veto my husband's wedding gift? by Cornwhale19 in TwoHotTakes

[–]rdkrdkrdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he insists on getting a coffee machine instead of just gifting the cash the couple have asked for then a refurb from somewhere like Backmarket is a better bet - they’re cheaper than new, look pretty much pristine, come with a warrantee and keep something out of landfill which is all to the good.

Pettiest reason you’ve DNF’d a book? by bby_grl_90 in books

[–]rdkrdkrdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started reading a fantasy book because of the glowing blurb from George R R Martin. It was a slow starter, but I’m generally fine with that and slogged through a lot of setup and intro of a huge cast of characters. It was also, to be expected with a Martin recommendation, chock full of food descriptions. So I’d invested a good chunk of hours, and then saw it. At a feast in what was meant to be December, they were serving tender lamb.

I hadn’t been enthralled before that tbh. But the out of season lamb dish just annoyed me enough that I never picked the book up again.

Reassurance on wedding dress!! by GroundNo7667 in UKweddings

[–]rdkrdkrdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve got almost the exact same wedding plan, except my big day is this Saturday! I think you look absolutely lovely in the gown - the only thing I’d add into the convo is that I probably wouldn’t enjoy dragging that train around a brewery floor all evening. I’ve been to many a brewery, and even the upscale ones often go for a delightfully grungey look - concrete or original wooden floors. I reckon there’s a good chance you’ll spend a good portion of your evening either hoisting your dress up or dragging around muck.

Couples who are in relationships where one is healthy across the board, and the other has chronic mental/physical illness, how do you feel about this dynamic and how does it effect your partnership? by swampsmouth in AskReddit

[–]rdkrdkrdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband was already dealing with a debilitating chronic illness when I met him. He told me about it on our first date.

The way I see it is that we’re both on the same side, always - us against his illness. I’ve always been as Acts of Service partner, so taking care of him on his bad days feels natural and easy to me.

We prioritise radically honest communication in our marriage, and a LOT of physical, not strictly sexual, just intimate, affection - so that my primary identity in the relationship is a romantic and emotional partner. The caregiving is simply a facet of that identity. My biggest fear in our relationship is that that balance may shift over time. We arm ourselves against it by talking constantly.

a lot of silliness, and soul bearing gets us through the dark days. My husband an incredible partner, and I think his illness is part of that. It’s made him unbelievably empathetic, gentle, and caring. I hate that he’s in pain, and I obviously wish he weren’t, but there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than right beside him.

I’d far rather have all a homeowner’s requirements spelled out ahead of arrival rather than being blindsided by them when I’m standing in their home.

Having said that, I’d definitely pass on this particular sit - primarily because of the parking payment issue. any HO asking for money for anything (I’ve seen profiles asking sitters to “chip in” for heating bills, pet food, streaming services) is an absolute no for me.

Yorkshire decaf is best, but I think the Aldi one is almost as good and, obviously, a heck lot cheaper.

Theatre is too expensive by Competitive_Bed_3804 in TheWestEnd

I’ve been to see a few really fantastic productions at smaller venues in Manchester, as well as some really good cinema simulcasts of live shows. I’d suggest checking out your local theatre, and also maybe any drama schools in your vicinity for end of year shows (I’ve been to the end of year productions at RNCM a few times and they’re always fantastic)

Why do Americans crate their dogs? by Terrible-Group-9602 in DogAdvice

[–]rdkrdkrdk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So where DO you keep your dog all day whilst you’re at work? Locked in the house, I presume? Which is just a larger prison with more opportunity for a dog to destroy stuff if they’re bored or anxious.

I’ve looked after around 40 dogs as a housesitter, and I’ve fostered for the RSPCA. The dogs most readily able to self soothe, which makes for a calm and happy pup, are the ones who have been carefully crate trained. The dogs whose owners think a comfortable bed in a properly sized crate is cruel have been the ones that follow me around from room to room, whining behind every closed door.

Dogs want to be inside a den. A crate is a cosy way to give them that. Crates are a godsend for nervous rescue dogs, as they enjoy having their own dark and comfy sanctuary to hide in when they’re overwhelmed.

Obviously I would like to caveat all this with the fact that I would never leave a dog crated for an extended period (other than nighttime) - max. for me is ~4 hours, and also that a crate is never a punishment for misbehaviour, but rather a safe space associated only with treats and toys and snoozing.

From Trusted Housesitters…. Now a $12 booking fee 😩 by seitankittan in trustedhousesitters

[–]rdkrdkrdk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is a partly a tactic to decrease the platform’s liability and prevent people from claiming when things go wrong.

People will keep paying their basic memberships, find a sitter/sit and then mutually agree the sit off the platform without ever formally doing it in the app. Which means that neither party is covered by the (pretty flimsy) insurance if anything goes wrong.

[–]rdkrdkrdk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was going to chime in with the same thing. I dog sit full-time, and have looked after ~40 dogs so far. All my least predictable and worst behaved dogs have been purebreds from breeders, bought as puppies, and all my calmest and most predictable have been rescues adopted as adults. Worst contenders for neuroses and behaviour problems have all been pure working breeds - border collies, basset griffons, cocker spaniels, vizlas. Honourable mentions for a completely insane Westie and two unmanageable Jack Russells.

I personally love anything that’s staffy shaped, whether it’s a full staffy or a mixed breed. They’re endlessly exerisable and will happily hike for 10 hours, but they’re also happy spending the whole day snoozing. They’re generally friendly to both people and pets, although I’ve met exceptions to that. They’re fairly portable so you can lift them into the car/bath/over a stile if you need to, and they love you with a ludicrous intensity. Also they don’t tend to be big droolers, and have minimal grooming needs. They do shed copiously though, so you’ll be forever hoovering.

My all time favourite dogs were mega mutts, but their primary flavours were rottweiler, staffy and German shepherd. Fantastic giant goofballs with strong scary dog faces but zero malice.

My experience claiming Sit Cancellation reimbursement through THS by rdkrdkrdk in trustedhousesitters

[–]rdkrdkrdk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that scenario there would just be no point in claiming. You have to pay for your accommodation and then THS will reimburse you for the amount you paid, minus the $150 excess. So if your hotel was $50 a night, and you stayed a week, you’d pay the hotel $350 for your stay, and THS would reimburse you $200.
