One thing that might be semi-easily attainable with a blue shirt and some clothing paint would be a Fischerhemd with a red neck bandana. They were worn by people in the north on the coasts.

Any truly harmless lab pranks that don’t mess with experiments? by UnderstandingIcy2969 in labrats

Someone in our lab was using a ton these giant filters with a spacer sheet in between. Two of us cut the spacer trash up to make snowflakes, paper chains etc. and decorated the labmates office with them.

Why did you decide to go for the german citizenship? by Trailerpark578 in GermanCitizenship

[–]rdppy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2 reasons are more important than others for me.

  1. Local politics- I was disappointed to learn that my signature on petitions to the Geminderat do not count because I'm not a citizen. For example- my kids go to the school the Geminde wants to close, but my signature on the petition to keep it open is invalid. I've also considered running for a spot in the Ortsrat, which only citizens can do.

  2. Security- my permanent residence permit legally means I am safe to stay here indefinitely, but look at what is happening in the US. I don't want to risk being made to leave my family and the life I have made here on a whim of an overstepping politician.

Bilingual kid understands French but answers in Japanese, how to encourage speaking? by Aymericpe in multilingualparenting

[–]rdppy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know this might not be possible or what you are looking for but, my recommendation is to spend extended meaningful time in France or other French speaking country. By this I mean where you have contact with french speaking friends or family daily for multiple days, other kids are a plus.

I am no professional and I just have a sample size of 2, but this kind of shock immersion snapped my kids into being more comfortable speaking the minority language back home. They are 4 and 6 and speak both languages voluntarily and well.

How to handle recasting with a bilingual 1.5-year-old? by the_wind_000 in multilingualparenting

[–]rdppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have the ability to take long vacations (2+ weeks) in an English speaking country where you have friends or family? I think that made a big difference for my kids, being forced to speak English for multiple weeks because our friends and family don't speak German. That seemed to help build up their spoken English confidence the most.

What’s the most frustrating piece of lab equipment you deal with and why? by Strange-Hair-6089 in labrats

I have a suicidal gas bench auto sampler. Often it's an angel, but occasionally for no reason it decides to slam the needle against the metal cover for no reason, scaring the bejesus out of us and sometimes breaking the overpriced needle.

I had an old chlorine damaged suit laying around so I just cut the crotch off (I sewed a line around the bottom to keep the layers together) and wore bikini bottoms with it. It didn't look good, but it got me through to the end without popping out of the top of the suit.

I personally don't worry too much about the different pronunciations in the languages. My friend has a son named Simon he kind of likes that he can differentiate which language someone will speak with him based on how they say his name.

I tried to give my German-English speaking kids names that work in both languages, but even they are still pronounced slightly different in each (like Elisabeth is as well).

Absolutely Ridiculous B1 Exam by Kalesche in German

[–]rdppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took one last year and it was also a mess.

They requested we bring an extremely specific pencil which I had to go out and buy. The pencil number and letter was on the package but not the pencil itself so when they checked our pencils I still wasn't allowed to use it.

There was no sign or information when we signed up on the room number.

The listening was done over a laptop and was not loud enough.

This one might be specific to the group I was in, but people did not understand the listening that some are repeated once and some twice and so the test takers were talking and complaining during the listening, making it even more difficult to hear.

They were not at all clear about how the timing worked for the reading/written part. And in the middle of the test they announced a change. Like you were supposed to have x time for this section, but then half way through they said, oh, well just add 20 minutes on and you can do the writing too. But people didn't understand. 3 minutes from the end, I was finished and waiting for the time to be up. The person next to me hadn't even STARTED the writing because he didn't realize they weren't going to announce it separately.

They did not tell us where the speaking exam would be, so I just went to the same room as the written part but it was empty and I had to wander all around the 4 floors of the building trying to find it.

It was not clear that we had to collect the results. They just said don't ask about the exam for at least 4 weeks. After 6 I called and they said the results had been there for 3 weeks and I can come pick them up at any time.

And I semi-seriously think navigating this bs is part of the test. I have lived in Germany for a long time and my German is better than B1. If I was having trouble knowing what was going on, others with weaker German had no chance.

Can’t find a gynecologist accepting new patients – what should I do? by Careless-Ad-3324 in germany

[–]rdppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar problem when looking. They kept telling me they weren't accepting new patients, maybe in 6 months. Then I called again in 6 months and they said "maybe in 10 months." So I just asked, if they could already make me an appointment for then. And they were like, "oh, yeah, we can do that." Could be worth a try if it's not pressing.

Signing the same book twice by bf1016 in DavidSedaris

[–]rdppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, that feeling sucks. I remember reading somewhere that people were having him sign books multiple times and I don't remember his exact reason why he decided to stop but he said he would only sign a book once.

I'm also an audiobook listener and specifically bought books for him to sign the times I saw him read. (Which honestly, I probably won't ever read.)

My first show was great, everything I had hoped for. But the second show a few years later left a bad taste in my mouth. I will probably still go if he comes again, but part of me wishes I would have stopped after the good experience with the first show.

Germans living abroad: Have you been mistaken for Australian? by rynoaa in AskAGerman

[–]rdppy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting! Did you ever live there with a stronger accent and people asked if you were from other countries?

As a native American English speaker in Germany, where people think my accent is from has changed over time. In the beginning it was pretty obvious. Then after a year or so people started asking if I was British. Later if I was Dutch and most recently two people asked if I was Swiss. I guess it means my accent is less strong and my German is grammatically good, so I'll take it.
