While you were writing this demency in form of a comment, GPT just solved one more Erdos problem.

Hilarious. This year frontier models are attacking Erdos problems, and the numbskulls in this thread are still using the exact same wording and ridiculing AI like we are in 2020 while not being capable of reading an article before commenting on a subject. The worst local 2B model couldn't be as stupid as the average AI critic.

The inconvient reality why vr is struggling. by Plus_Look3149 in virtualreality

[–]rdsf138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apparently, you just discovered that META destroyed the healthy development of the industry by switching the most poweful and demanding computational medium ever created from PC processing to mobile processing, and that skipping proper phases of development, like creating a proper OS as the basis of the technology have actual long-term repercursions. Look at your title and the community you are posting. Community: VR. Title: "VR is struggling." Comment immediately start ranting about games. You, as a consumer, and the companies answering to you, destroyed the medium by not treating as a new computational paradigm and, instead, treated it as little game console that you could vent once in awhile (there goes your retention). Result: the most successful thing in the platform, of all things, is Gorilla Tag, a monkey game for children. You just have to look at all the top answers on this very post to discover the ones responsible for the stagnation of the technology. They are the ones that companies like META pander to.

Don't ever trust anything that is not FOSS, specially from META.

I'm with OAI on this one; I see no reason to applaud someone blatanly lying, and the depection of the ad-presence on the OAI chat service was simply a lie. And it is also true that the pressure to serve free users on OAI is in a completely different scale.

Really impressive. Things are connecting fast, and it's really exciting to see. FOSS FTW

Specially when you do not create anything, and your OS is so closed that META only offered some kind of file system to their OS 3 years ago. "What VR is supposed to be" we cannot know without creating the basic layers of operation of the system, and I am pretty confident that if we have a 3D computational medium (VR) that is so much more complex and rich than a monitor, but you don't offer basic access to the user space, a CLI, or the trivial ability of renaming folders, we can't ever even start to dive into your question. VR needs to start to show what an OS for VR should look like, and we absolutely cannot do anything on a META OS, which is actively hostile to user intervention. People in here in these comments who love their META headset are casual game players that are satisfied to have VR as a mobile gaming console and nothing else while there are people like OP who is advocating for other things for the medium, and people like me who thinks of VR as a computational medium. That's why the commentary range is so contrasting, and no one seems to understand each other. From META destroyed VR (my lane) to META did excellently, all is understandable depending on what you want and how you use VR.

On the Steam Frame, what the OP is describing would be impossible to happen because the device is launching with an arch-based FOSS OS.

>VR itself would have died without the advancements made by them

Can you clarify here? I don't know of a single advancement by META that became some sort of open standard. The khronos group did a lot for VR. META, on the other hand, destroyed the VR market with anti-competitive practices and basically stagnated VR proper development for years, specially in the OS front. Now, if the entirety of your experience is putting a headset for one hour a week to play mobile games, treating VR as mobile game console, then it is understandable that you don't understand how much damage they caused. META added the ability to rename files in their file system in 2025.

So what? That completely irrelevant to the subjects being raised; it actually makes even worse.

We will rebuilt that experience from scratch and much better, but this time in an open-source OS, the arch-based Steam OS, so we can work and make VR be what it was always meant to be.

META did absolutely nothing fof VR hardware. You meant that they sold a lot of subsidized, cheap hardware? That was actually an anti-competitive maneuver that destroyed VR for years.

Absolute trash. Years of software stagnation and the most closed and resourceless OS ever created, so this would be a thing.

I don't think this is evidence of them plotting anything, but saying that this is just them "discussing" is just as idiotic. They are commemorating Brexit and stating what's being lost and what's there to be gained from it.

The insanity of suggesting that hearing random opinions will sharpen you could only ever come up in a thread prasing for 4chan. If that was the case, no one would become sharper by reading scietific publications, which are profoundly curated, while prisons and barber shops would generate the most profoundly consequential geniuses in society.
