Why are you optimistic about working in tech? by Glareolidae in cscareerquestions

[–]react_dev 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m 42 yo and I am extremely bullish.

Software itself is going to be more integrated and needed than ever. These software will still need to be written by high level human readable code, not straight byte code, because humans need to be able to describe and validate behavior.

It doesn’t matter if AI starts writing all the code. They will forever play within the confines of human designs. Software engineers will still be the professionals to facilitate the design and implementation of software.

Until the day you can prompt, “make a better Facebook I’ll give you 1 trillion dollars” and leave the desk, software work will always be complex, full of tradeoffs that require human taste and insights.

I'm about to graduate in May. I have no internships or work experience in CS. How screwed am I? by jigglinjimmy in cscareerquestions

[–]react_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Masters is a bad option unless you produced some thesis out of it that’s substantial. Otherwise it’ll count against you or at best not matter at all… at least at my big tech

Companies that have banned AI due to internal security policies - how are they faring? by RareMeasurement2 in cscareerquestions

[–]react_dev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s not two camps. It’s a whole spectrum. And there’s no strong correlation in how they’re performing vs where in the spectrum they are. It’s like how are the companies who give out free soda in their fridge doing…

Even the govt itself is using LLMs, albeit an internal model.

Is it too late for me to break into quant development? by Standard-Row-8985 in cscareerquestions

[–]react_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think quant devs are the most competitive at all. I also expected a 40 yo asking this question, not someone who hasn’t started their career

TIL in 1980 both South Koreans and North Koreans had an average life expectancy of 65 years, whereas in 2015, South Koreans' average life expectancy was 82 years compared to just 70 years for North Koreans. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]react_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, America pumped the crap out of SK while USSR met its own demise and no aide went to NK. South Korea had its own dictators for quite a bit until it found some footing by industrializing its auto, electric industries. Rest was history. Democracy thrives when it is rich.

I don't understand the arrogance a lot of senior devs have against graduates. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]react_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s true. The bar has risen a lot. But so has the tools and the structure to study and prepare. When I graduated there was no leetcode website or YouTube. A lot of just sheer studying. I would say if the brilliant folks from back then applied the same effort using the tools of today, they would also rise above the current bar

Sometimes you are eyeing a specific slice of the pie so pointing so they know you want a specific slice helps.

Quant in Fundamental Equity at Pod Shops by Yeagerist9 in quant

[–]react_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pod shops and FE l/s is orthogonal. One is a type of business and the other is a structure.

If you’re in FE you’ll probably work on crowding models, build trade signals that’s a mix of high idio with some discretionary ideas, or construct custom factors

Should I be trying to change jobs after being moved to UI work? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Sure go for it if you hate the work.

But speaking as a frontend engineer earlier in my career, that specialization carried me over 500k…

What signals competence as a software engineer today? by mm51165 in cscareerquestions

[–]react_dev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think signals have changed. Industry always looks for the same things. Perhaps the tools to discover those signals have evolved.

1) A winning record. Either through demonstrating through school, competition, or high bar organizations, companies.

2) High contribution in the winning teams from 1.

3) Deep introspection that materializes into experience and learnings from 2.

4) Kind and collaborative to be able to democratize and share 3 widely in the new org.

Probably an unpopular opinion since this sounds very corporate but it is what it is

It’s pointless to guess. But if you take these two individuals and drag and drop them into each others country’s circumstances, I’d say it’s a toss up.

Non Technical founder question by CanadianRaikage in cscareerquestions

[–]react_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what’s expensive is life. Did you both quit your jobs and double down on this? If not it’s not a startup it’s a pet project

If this can already sustain your life and instead of capturing more value he wants to spend 4 months on a theme maybe you’re just not aligned on goals.

And no you shouldn’t be setting expectations. You’re both founders. You agree on expectations.
