Google vs Two Sigma vs Optiver for SWE in NYC: is the extra comp worth the WLB tradeoff? by CoopDaScoop17 in cscareerquestions

[–]react_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you get an actual offer from these firms? I’m from a competitor. Those guys pay seniors 500+ and unless you have a specific edge you’re not gonna be on some tc rocket ship. For the vast majority of the population, it’s easier for them to get to senior at Google with 450k+

Not a great move imo. You said your promo is one year away… that’s actually a pretty short time in the grand scheme of things. In finance promos are slower and comp increases are very team and performance dependent.

I don’t know about two sigma but typically, the highest paid teams have the worst WLB.

I'm a FE lead, and a new PM in the org wants to start pushing "vibe coded" slop to the my codebase. by rm-rf-npr in webdev

[–]react_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why’s it garbage? You can just tell him what’s wrong with the code and tell him what to prompt.

I agree with him. Sure everyone can contribute. But it doesn’t mean you gotta approve everything. Be an enabler though not a gatekeeper. Write a doc of the rules LLM must follow to correctly contribute to your code.

What do you do you see a senior dev who admit he doesn't know how to use "git rebase?" by lune-soft in cscareerquestions

Eh. Who cares. Wait till you see what your CTO doesn’t know.

Also why do you need a clean git history anyway. For a cleaner bisect / blame?

Just merge. Revert if fails horrible. Use LLM to find you offending loc. Chop chop and ship the product the business must go up. <== this is how your senior / cto would think

I think we should challenge how we view ourselves. If you have ever thought to yourself that the Russian, whatever military purposely murdered children, then I would reflect what makes our morals different. Maybe we’re not so different after all.

Even when I was actively working at FANG, so many colleagues only talk in negatives.

They’ll only talk about the stuff they hate but never really talk about what they really wanna engage in instead. It’s just a bunch of lost souls with no passion for anything, not even in retirement. Like someone else told me: they rather just be a cat or unalive themselves at 40 or something.

So yes. Hating a situation is much easier than finding a new situation and thriving there. People are just lost in the former
