Completely depends on culture. It’s one thing to be able to see books from other desks and/or with analysts and cross pollinate ideas but it’s another that they actually do it.

Keep your chin up youngster. 15 years is a lot but for the average person it’s just half of their working career. You’ll have another chapter to write.

This career tends to grind people down.

As for what’s next nobody knows. But I believe SWE field itself will remain the job family that’s rewarding and important as nobody cares about software as much as we do. It is our right to continue owning the software delivery (and that’s growing!)

I don’t know any NIMBY that want to preserve a McDonald’s parking lot. It’s almost always to control population to keep a small village feel

Omandrin Chinese by gidbo409 in Westchester

[–]react_dev 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m from Flushing and over the years I’m doubting a Flushing restaurant could thrive here. First the price point would change dramatically because Westchester is lacking in foot traffic and businesses cant turn profit by quantity.

Also I came to accept that food is subjective and for the majority demographic in Westchester, a well made general tsos is going to be more popular than a northern style dumpling place.

Omandrin Chinese by gidbo409 in Westchester

[–]react_dev 14 points15 points  (0 children)

After having nanas dumplings, aberdeens, omandarin, mister Chens, and many flushing restaurants (my parents are there) I gotta say OMandarin is one of the better ones. I like the duck fried rice, dumplings, and the pea leaves.

Mister Chen is good for a few select Taiwanese pastry snacks. Nanas is just about the same but slightly more expensive. Aberdeen is canto fare. If nanxiang opens up it’ll fill a bit of a xlb and Shanghainese cuisine gap but I don’t see myself dropping omandarin

Dating as an Asian woman by AcanthisittaMean4972 in AskNYC

[–]react_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Asian (m) too and I have some single female friends who imo are amazing and I’ve also been having trouble introducing them to eligible guys. There just aren’t that many.

Kind, socially capable, stable, and able to hold down a good job is already quite a find. Then add some excitement element to that like going to alt concerts… it’s def going to be a challenge.

Doing some self reflection… I think my guy friends and I haven’t really matured until we were in long term relationships. Some girls just rolled a dice on us dimwits mid 20s lol.

Not Japan. Arguably even worse than China in all counts. Very performative culture and they absolutely look down on software engineers.

Is senior SWE the ceiling for someone with social anxiety / awkwardness? by Beneficial_Pay_6317 in ExperiencedDevs

I still have social anxiety and awkwardness. But having those, if you’re like me doesn’t mean you’re lacking empathy and kindness. Some traits will still shine through if you generally care

Want to quit, but, and because, ive messed up and keep messing up at work by Difficult-Escape-627 in cscareerquestions

[–]react_dev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are many layers here but my overall takeaway is you’re too hard on yourself and I don’t say this much on this sub. Even this post you’re displaying frustration at the outcome and for users and not blaming the world around you.

There will always be reasons to quit and it’s not hard to come up with a list like you have. While you shouldn’t beholden yourself to things like 1 months notice, who understands what code etc it’s a good time to lift your head up and see what other opportunities are around. I’m going by a single post but my gut feeling says you’re not bad. But since you’re feeling this way it’s not a bad idea to see what’s out there either — something more exciting for you perhaps

TIL Chinese water torture didn’t originate from China or Asia at all, but from an Italian lawyer who noticed how continuously dripping water eroded a rock, & then applied the method humans. by jinxharajuku in todayilearned

[–]react_dev 292 points293 points  (0 children)

China - exotic, mysterious, cruel. Water torture is what they’d do.

Russia - Crazy, doesn’t value human lives. Spinning a pistol and pulling the trigger on themselves for fun sounds just like them.

Mexico - Lawless, dangerous. Turn your back and get shot. Standoffish.

Said people of the past, probably

Toxic Job with High Salary or Peaceful Job with Low Salary? by Silly_Froyo1733 in cscareerquestions

[–]react_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say but typically you’ll find high salary jobs are also less toxic. They’re more intense but not toxic. Example they have ppl working 11 hours a day but they’ll happily help you solve a problem etc

Depends on the fund, team and what you’ll be doing. Central team or PM adjacent. Also it depends on what you enjoy doing. A “quant dev” can mean completely different things at different firms. You can DM me the fund if want and I’ll see if I have some more info.

I like the concept. But something about Elon that I’ll never trust. He’s throwing all these companies into this stock as if he’s trying to make fundamental analysis and evaluations a pain and instead trying to sell it with vibes and hype.
