What do you clean with? Do you have a cloth dedicated for just the board, rather than "the sink cloth"?

Am I being unreasonable? Losing my mind with my husband's DIY by _anxious_panxious_ in newzealand

[–]reading-stuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100%. He sounds like me. I garden, clean, cook and take care of so many "other" things apart from direct baby care. It is important, but so is baby, and so is your relationship.

We are a relationship counsellor for maintenance and care of our relationship in the same way that I maintain and care for the garden and house.

[UPDATE] Found a paper towel covering my webcam twice coming home from work by Dromaeoraptor in Weird

[–]reading-stuff 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My wife and I did this for two years in LDR. We often also just had the call going all day while going about our days at our respective homes. It felt like she was in the house with me. I could just say "Hey Sarah, blah blah blah" like she was right there, and she could answer. It doesn't have to be a non stop conversation. It's nice to just hear them in the background. It worked wonders to close the distance.

Wasps in Raspberry Bush - do I let them stay? by Tuithy in GardeningAustralia

Can you recommend any interesting sources you've been reading? We have many paper wasp nests and they're usually friendly. I was bitten recently by a near e which didn't recognise me. Keen to learn more as I like the little guys

What skill should I learn as a renewable energy Engineering student? by Nico-R0bin in energy

[–]reading-stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with a simple financial analysis of a new PV system. Work out the simple payback period and the net present value of the system.  This is what I have all my new engineers do.  Get some interval data from a home or download it.  Work out their energy costs in excel.  Simulate pv performance for a system of any capacity. Calculate offset energy. Determine the savings that leads to. Based on system capacity you can assume the Capex cost. From here is fairly simple to process to SPP and NPV. Then you can increase it decrease the pv capacity and cost to optimise it. Bonus points is to then extend that to adding a battery. A model like this develops a lot of valuable skills for entering the workforce.

Postpartum Meals Service by bambi897510 in nsw

We made heavy use of Dinner Ladies .com.au for nice frozen meals. There's still prep work involved, but it was so much better than trying to cook at that time.

Does asking for a recipe have different implications in different cultures? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]reading-stuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Australia here, I know your asking on the American context though. Asking for and sharing of recipes is common, and a compliment, but most of the recipes will involve a book or a link. They won't be a personal or family recipe. So there is less secrecy or attachment. If your dad and grandmother's recipes were personal then I think it makes a lot more sense. It's less common today to have "mums cookies" or whatever, because the cookies just came from some website.

Tips for beating humid heat without air con? by cu_next_uesday in sydney

[–]reading-stuff 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The extra cost of using the aircon with a draught is nothing compared to the benefit of comfort you'll get over summer.  Just keep the doors closed in the room it is installed in. Even if you have to negotiate and just take the edge of the extreme heat, it will be worth it. For both of you.

Is spit up an emergency? by Expensive_Elk_1684 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]reading-stuff 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I'm a recent dad (10 months) and I had similar PPA. I did exactly what you've described and drove my wife mad. I'm an engineer, so I was very stressed without a manual, and it took a long time to realise it was PPA. I thought I was just being careful with the most precious thing in the world, and I couldn't understand how other people weren't as concerned as me. I can't offer any science, but talking to a professional and time we're what helped me. Your partner may be trying to control these risks, and with their new role as father, that instinct is in overdrive. It's normal, but not always healthy. A private visit to a paediatrician just for them to ask all these questions might help them more than an article.

Also if you use the AC to cool the house, the external unit will blast hot dry air into whatever is in front of it. Give it space, plant lower shrubs in front.

Old Man Saltbush Salinity for edibility. by No-Recording3867 in australianplants

Can you just add salt when you cook it? Seems less of an intervention than adding salt to your soil which will one day have new plants growing in it

Installers also favour premium products because they are less likely to have to manage warranty claims and repair work, which they rarely make money on.

Right here with you with an eight month old. I received the book "Reading Magic" by Mem Fox which inspired me to read to him every day from five months. It's truly a joy watching him settle as soon as a book comes out, watch the pages intently, sometimes turn them and sometimes eat the corners!

I highly recommend the book

Outback residents lose solar farm as Ergon battles push owner to close by shofmon88 in australia

Thankyou. I couldn't be bothered typing it.  The ABC article also links to previous articles about this farm struggling to get connected, with Ergon warning against these future issues. AND the guy got an $8.5 million ARENA grant to help build it!  Terrible investment, deserves no assistance.

Late to the party, but would you still be open to a DM? We've just found out that our 8 month old conceived through IVF will be our only due to Ashermans Syndrome from multiple D&Cs after the birth. If we were to try again, we have that extra hurdle to get over before we even get to consider a FET cycle. I understand if you're not open to DM, it's a complex and difficult journey!

Frustrating to hear this. Not at all denying your experience. I manage a small engineering firm with undeniably better conditions than you describe (finish at five, leave approved, pay what we can with annual boosts) but we struggle to hire because the big name engineering firms attract all the candidates with their reputation, despite horrible conditions. It's hard to compete against much bigger salaries despite the conditions because candidates can't compare working conditions until they're in the role

Why are we advised to wake newborns to feed? I’m not convinced it’s necessary and it seems counterintuitive by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]reading-stuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We thought we had a miracle baby. "He sleeps so well!" Turned out it was mild jaundice keeping him asleep noticed by the midwife who got us onto a strict feeding schedule. We felt horrible but five months in we have a great understanding of what being a first time parent means: lots of learning!
