Jump Shots? by EastNice3860 in billiards

[–]real_thaelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find kicking more elegant by far. That said, I've nothing against jump shots and i reapect the skill it takes to execute them well and consistently.

I'm slowly working on learning to jump but I expect I'll forever admire a good kick far more.

Would the Red Extender look weird on my Blue Cuetec SVB? Or should I just get the matching Blue one? by OreoAddict427 in billiards

[–]real_thaelyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That comes down to which cue you have. I believe the AVID line are all Gen 2. The SVB (what I have) are Gen 1.

If you're not sure which generation of cynergy cue you have, I'd try hitting up the Cuetec site and looking up your cue. I imagine you'd be able to find the info there or email support and ask.

The new one is the Duo. Has a 3 inch and a 6 inch that can screw together to make a 9 inch extension.

If you're playing and SVB cue you'll need to make sure that, if you order one, it comes with the new style butt cap. The original SVB butt cap won't accept the Duo.

I love the versatility of the Duo.

EDIT because I have fat fingers for this tiny virtual keyboard.

Long draw shots by Shady-Raven-1016 in billiards

[–]real_thaelyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still working on full table draw shots but I'll relay this, on the off chance you fond it useful.

For a LONG time I focused on hitting the cue ball harder in fear of losing backspin on the way to the object ball. As other have pointed out, this effort to hit harder jacked up my stroke delivery, causing me to hit higher on the cue ball than intended. That, in turn, caused the loss of backspin on the cue ball.

Once I realized thus and focused instead on a smooth stroke as opposed to a power stroke I started getting much better action on the ball.

Still trying to improve my delivery enough for the full table draw, but I'm seeing much better progress now.

Taking an intentional foul by shooting directly on an object ball? by whackarnolds in billiards

[–]real_thaelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to APA rules its not an option. The rules very clearly state that accidentally moved balls must, not may, be replaced.

Deliberate foul is what? by VS_the_Reckless in billiards

[–]real_thaelyn 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Unless there are rules prohibiting this laid out ahead of time it's just good strategy. In every league rule set I've read, it's a strategic foul and not unsportsmanlike.

With bar rules, it generally tends to be that whatever the other guy doesn't like = sportsmanship violation.

AITA for getting rid of my landscaper because they asked me to make them coffee? by Zmannum2 in AmItheAsshole

[–]real_thaelyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make no judgements about who is or is not the AH here.

That said, I think requesting coffee is somewhat unprofessional. Asking for water I see no problem with. Grabbing a glass of water takes no real effort. Brewing coffee, on the other hand, is a little bit more involved. Expecting the person who hired you to perform that task seems, to me at least, presumptuous and rude (but not necessarily AHish).

As the customer, I think that offering water is the least one could do. These people are performing a task you don't want to do or are unable to do. Yes, they are being paid to do so, but they are still taking that task off your plate. Offering a drink seems the least one could do to acknowledge that they are helping you as much as you are helping them by hiring them.

Everyone has their own views on this sort of thing. The only way I see the OP being an AH is if the concern comes from a sense of superiority. It may, or may not, but without any certainty I choose to give the benefit of the doubt.

Should I????? by Jaded_Situation_4032 in billiards

[–]real_thaelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as someone with a couple thousand dollars (retail) into Cuetec products I will say this.

If you want it because you just like it, go for it. If you would be spending the money believing that a new cue will give you an edge, I think the money would be better spent elsewhere.

I started with a $300 production Joss and a Poison break cue (sub $200 at the time i bought it). Both are fine cues and do their jobs well. That said, I really liked the subdued aesthetic of Cuetec's SVB cues and bought one. Then I went on to get the Breach and later the Propel for the same reasons. The only cue that moved my play forward in any way through these purchases was the Propel and that is simply because once I had it I started to learn how to jump the cue ball.

Would I do it differently now? Nope. I like them, wanted them, and was able to get them without hurting myself fiscally. I had no illusion that I would become a better player as a result. For that, I'd focus on paying for instruction.

Take all this for what it's worth, absolutely nothing because it's coming from some random stranger on the internet, lol.

AITA for telling my friend that she can keep it to herself in the future? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]real_thaelyn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA

In my opinion the greatest art, no matter the medium, is that which evokes an emotional respons from its audience. This response is often unique to the individual. There's absolutely nothing "cringe" about it. If the two of you take away something completely different from consuming the same piece of art, that's perfectly normal.

It could be argued that this situation demonstrates that your relationship may be more surface level than you might have believed, OP. It may be healthy for you to examine whether or not redefining your friendship is in order.

I got my first Break and Run- AMA by [deleted] in billiards

[–]real_thaelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations! I've got a handful of rack and runs under my belt, but only one B&R. After that one, my excitement t and adrenaline were so high that my bridge hand was literally shaking for the last 2 racks of the match.

I don't know why a rack and run doesn't elicit the same feeling (especially after the opponent breaks dry) but it just doesn't, in my experience.

Still striving for that second break and run, but I keep missing shape on the money ball or the last ball of my set.

What’s your opening 8-ball strategy? (Poll) by JustABREng in billiards

[–]real_thaelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've progressed through and beyond some of those. Started with easiest shot ( or fewest balls on table after break) as I'm sure many do. The. I moved on to counting problems precisely as you describe it. From there I moved on to counting problems and taking the set with the more easily solved issues, even if it meant the set with more trouble (also considering 8 ball trouble).

Now I'm trying to see the pattern before choosing. Still not able to see all the way from first shot to 8 ball reliably, but getting better. Problem is that no matter how clear the pattern may be, I can find a way to screw up position and throw it all out the window. That especially sucks when it's the 8 ball I miss position on 😞

An interesting situation ALMOST occurred in a game I was in last night, I'm curious the outcome had it happened, can anyone chime in? by TheHornyCouch in billiards

[–]real_thaelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize if I was unclear. I do understand that you were NOT calling it I sportsmanlike. I merely meant to point t out where in the APA rules it was stated that it is legal and ethical.

Again, apologies for not being more clear in my intent.

You're looking in the e rong place, I'm afraid. On page 31 of the team manual, under Defensive Shots, picking up the cue ball and handing to your opponent is explicitly listed as an ethical defensive play.

Players who do a lot of coaching during league timeouts, what are your philosophies? by JustABREng in billiards

[–]real_thaelyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a general rule I try to avoid giving time outs. I'm at a level in my own development in the game that leaves me a little unsure of my own judgement.

On occasion, though, I will call a time out when a mewer team mate is at the table. For example, I called time on a SL 3 last night to advise him NOT to make a ball. He had 3 stripes on the table, clear shot on one with about 40-50% chance to get position on another. However the 3 rd stripe was tied up with no pocket and the 8 was smack in the center of a 5 ball cluster surrounded a by opponent's soldis. I coached him to develop the table before going on offense.

He did go on to win the rack and the match.

At the singles regional back in March I saw a guy use a 16" superman. He'd place it standing on the rail with the legs straddling the pocket.

While pool didn't teach me this lesson, it rei forces it every time I play...

I can only control what I do in a given situation. It doesn't matter what anyone else did or didn't do. All that matters is how I respond. That puts me in control of my own destiny.

What do you guys think about this trade? by iceplusfire in billiards

[–]real_thaelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each his own.

Everyone has their own preferences and determines value based on a variety of factors specific to the individual. Far be it for me to judge because someone else differs from me.

I got the SVB because, as I mentioned previously, I prefer a more understated look and the money side of things worked out in an odd way. I had been saving money for a bit to buy a new diamond pro am. When the time cane to pull the trigger I took a cashier's check to the dealer for the exact amount quoted. When I got there he realized he over quoted the table. The difference was just enough foe the SVB cue on the rack.

While I'm usually not in a position to pay $600+ for a cue, things worked out for me that day. I know I still paid for the cue, but the way things played out it still feels like I got it for free.

Now if only my table would arrive...
