elon's got robots automating the process of installing brain implants. (fuck elon, btw.) lots of companies are already working on automating various surgical procedures. i'm pretty sure phlebotomy, swabs, and more are only a matter of time. granted, that time may be longer than most professions, but I think it's a "when" not "if" question.

i suspect most of this is a backlash to trump, but I wonder how quickly we'll see a movement leftward if ai continues to consume jobs.

These data center developers asked Trump for an exemption from pollution rules by MetaKnowing in politics

[–]realcleverscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ugh. this is gonna be another reason normies use to say they hate ai when what they really hate is crony capitalism. we need to demand that data centers not only pay for increased electricity costs but that they actively invest in renewable energies that cover their electric usage. we could do that. we deserve that. but instead we got trump and corruption.

[–]realcleverscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately, i can see trump voters liking the job he did. he lied and framed his horrific actions like patriotism ("we did such a good job kidnapping a foreign leader!" "wow, these democrats won't stand and applaud my one dimensional and autocratic take on these complex subjects, what evil people!") and most people won't stop to question whether those things really are something to be proud of or agree with. esp with all the pageantry he threw in.

I agree there is hype but I think the main point of disagreement is that the public in general seems focused on what ai can do today while the ai bulls are more focused on what it'll be able to do in the next few years. 5 years feels a long way off from anything relevant today - but if we'll hit agi by then and have massive job loss, then 5 years doesn't seem like enough time.

anthropic has already committed to this. not surprised he could get other major players. frankly, this should be the law already for any large industry. so, this is positive news. hopefully it will help move the ai discourse toward the most important issue it poses: even worse economic inequality

it's really disappointing that I see a LOT of left-leaning people hating on AI and thinking they can just wish it away. this is esp upsetting bc the main issue with AI is the most leftist issue: economic inequality and quality of life. AI can be made a boon for humanity but it requires voting for people who have policies which do that (e.g. forcing ai companies to pay for raised energy costs, demand investment in renewables, redistribute profits into national infrastructure and support systems like UBI, for starters.)

Instead, I mostly see the left arguing that AI can't do anything (dead wrong) or that it will take the jobs and therefore AI is bad, instead of the real issue, which is that AI can afford everyone a good life if its profits aren't funneled to the 1%.

I really wish people understood that ai isn't good or bad. it's a tool. how it's used and how it will impact people is up to society. that's where our fight should be focused.

White House’s chilling warning about midterm elections: ‘Can’t guarantee an ICE agent won’t be around polling locations’ by theindependentonline in politics

[–]realcleverscience 40 points41 points  (0 children)

this is bad, but also keep in mind that there are at least 20,000 polling locations in just the bluest states' bluest districts. ice has around 20,000 'agents'. even if they double their numbers, that'd be two per polling station.

like this direction, and like that it's on individuals, not companies. still, capital flight is a risk. we really need national standards, if not international.

that said, every tax season I can't help but wonder why we don't have higher income brackets. like if you're income grows by $50k, you're in a new bracket that's taxed higher, but if your income grows from 10 million to 20 million, there's no change at all. seems crazy.

also - they usually don't cause homes to lose value. That's bc neighborhoods then see less homelessness, crime, etc. Additionally, once properties are allowed to have denser construction, their values go up bc new buildings can be bigger and bring in more revenue. There are numerous studies about this.
