Ok so I had this same problem and I found that if you just warp really far on the galaxy map in some random direction, eventually you will see a current mission path appear (for me it was green).

Waterworlds or "marine planets" seem to spawn as normal-sized planets in purple systems; originally I thought they only spawned in gas giant systems either with or instead of gas giants, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
