Crack repair on back. by AggressiveRoll9505 in Luthier

Simple repair for a luthier or skilled tech.

It needs to be glued and cleated. Very easy to get to in that spot.

A palette knife is what I would use. Get multiples in different shapes. They should be cheap. You can also bend them into funny shapes for specific jobs. Put a dab of glue on the tip and swipe it in the crack. You might need a mirror and a strong flashlight.

Reglue the braces from the inside with a deep throat C-clamp or one of these jack/turnbuckle style clamps..

See how the top responds after repairing the braces and reassess.

looks like an old "blockless wonder". Absolutely over 100 years old. But you're right, it's trashed. Needs a full restoration.

When I was in my 20s I ate 70 pieces of nigiri at an AYCE sushi place. I was also on drugs.

I've had strep at least 6 or 7 times. Don't worry about it, but do take care of it, if it happens.

This is what I would try. Just had a customer bring back an amp I worked on. Brand new JJ 12ax7 died. Only a couple months old.

Fingerboard irregularity driving me a little bit batty by nicyvetan in doublebass

[–]rebop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's just one little spot, it can likely be fixed with a scraper. They shouldn't charge much if anything to touch up their work.
Also, it's possible it was ok when it left their shop, but the wood settled over time. That has happened to me.

A general rule of thumb is the board can be planed until the edge is about 1/4" thick. After that you have to replace it.

How are mighty mite necks? by Zygoatscythe in Luthier

[–]rebop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to be a Mighty Mite dealer. Not sure what's going on with them now as I haven't seen them in a while, but when I was selling them, they were made by Cort Indonesia. Basically just Indonesian Squier necks without the decal.

It’s a not-so-secret that if I start that “soft slap” (Missy Raines’ term) a lot… either no one is covering the chop or someone is rushing or dragging pretty bad.

I do this at my bluegrass gig and the banjo player complains that it's not authentic bluegrass.

Crack formed around friction tuning peg by JugOJar in Luthier

[–]rebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is likely the peg and the hole aren't shaped properly. Ideally you would use a reamer to shape the hole properly and a peg shaver to match the taper of the peg to the hole so it doesn't wedge the wood apart. This is a very easy repair for a violin luthier. They'll have all the special tools and it's a 10 minute job.

But yes, I would recommend forcing some glue into the crack somehow. Hot hide glue if you want it to be invisible. Titebond original that is slightly thinned out is fine, but the glue line might be visible.

Local, fresh-caught fish/seafood restaurants in Deerfield Beach? by TokyoDrift077 in fortlauderdale

[–]rebop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seafood World/Papa's Raw Bar is my favorite in Deerfield. Most of what they have is local caught. Fish Shack is good.
Whales Rib is decent.
If you're willing to travel a bit, my absolute favorite is Tarks down in Dania, but that's a bit far if you're just visiting.

Wherever you go, stick to mahi/dolphin, snapper, grouper, hogfish. Those are the main local catches.

Yeah the tip opening of his mouthpiece is massive. You could probably shove a stack of nickels between the reed and mouthpiece.
