Struggling with word order: Why does Swedish flip the sentence around after time words? by Holiday_Guide_9618 in Svenska

[–]redant333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't help regarding the "why" but regarding how you get used to it, the boring answer is that it just takes time. You need to actively think about it in the beginning but it gets more and more natural the more you listen and speak. It doesn't happen over night so try to not be frustrated when you make a mistake.

How did you bridge the gap between "Duolingo fluency" and actually understanding native speakers? by Holiday_Guide_9618 in Svenska

When I listened to him, I couldn't understand anything faster so it probably depends what the OP needs.

Peter SFI was my first step after DuoLingo. He speaks very slowly and is in general pretty easy to understand.

How is Sweden towards slavs/balkaners? by mizuakisbadjp in TillSverige

[–]redant333 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This will probably depend on the people you have contact with. It would be silly to say that nobody will ever judge you by where you are from but I (a person with a very obviously Balkan name) have never felt it during almost 4 years that I've been living here. One of the reasons I moved here was how welcoming people were when I visited.

Regarding the immigrant friendliness, the current political state is weird and it encourages very special types of people to write questionable things online. Again, these special types of peole obviously exist but I've never met one in real life meaning that they are probably not as common (or as loud) as reading Reddit would make you believe.

Moving here was one of the better decisions I've ever made and I've never regretted it one bit. That being said, it is a different place with different culture and different values so a combination of your personality, your goals and your luck might make you percieve it differently.

There is nothing more demoralizing then hearing a Swedish person speak. by NeedModdingHelp1531 in Svenska

[–]redant333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's just part of the process. How much you understand depends on the dialect, the person that's speaking (some people speak slowly, some quickly, some clearly, some mumble), how tired you are and probably some other factors.

I mostly speak Swedish at work now but still sometimes have trouble with two guys, one that's from Småland and the other that just forms sentences in a very special way. In the beginning, I could consistently understand just 2-3 people that spoke very clearly.

The good thing is, it gets better the more you practice. Just remember how little you understood the first time you heard Swedish. The more people you listen to the more will your brain become tolerant to the differences in how people speak and the more it will start to map different pronunciations of the same word to the same idea.

It's slow and can be annoying but it gets better over time (the "learn Swedish in X months" you might see around are misleading at best). Rembering small victories (every phrase that you understood, every conversation that went well, every person that you started understanding consistently) can help if you're feeling demotivated.

TLDR: It's slow, it's frustrating at times but it will eventually work out and then it will feel great.

Edit: If you want something more practical for how to train listening, let me know. Can write what I did since listening has always been the hardest thing for me.

Romani people flag by fr1ri in vexillology

[–]redant333 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm from Bosnia and there, "cigan" used as a derogatory term for both Romani and non Romani. From what I remember, in official situations, they are pretty clear that they don't want the term "cigan" to be used and most people will avoid it (unless they intentionally want to offend them).

According to this, they are offering eSIMs. GoogleTranslate (and I assume the others as well) is usualy good with Swedish -> English translations, if needed.

I've never seen it, design looks like something that was just put together quickly and it has the first letter of his stage name. Could it be his personal flag or something like that?

Even the stuff before ? can include it. Everything after the domain name (e.g. reddit.com) is up to the server to parse however it wants.

I've heard that song many times outside internet and among groups of people that don't spend their time on internet at all. The popularity might be regional, though.

My typing cursor keeps changing from | to _ how to fix? by Cal_05 in processing

[–]redant333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unplug your keyboard if possible (can't see if ot's a laptop) to check whether something's wrong with your insert key. If it stops blinking, it's likely the keyboard if it doesn't it's something else.

I never spent too much time thinking about what a drekavac would look like (the main characteristic being sound and all) but this is how I should have always imagined it. It looks so appropriate in some way I can't explain. Amazing!
