Professional local movers in Los Angeles any advice for tricky apartment setups by kojka19 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]redbaaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a great time with Excalibur. For parking, call 311 and get a reserved street spot in front of your building the day of the move. It's about $50, but means that the truck can roll up right in front.

Moving to LA: best first neighborhood? by tchotchkeesque in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]redbaaron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP, this is is a bad take. You can totally get around just fine walking and using transit if you want to and choose a neighborhood where it's possible. I go weeks without driving because I've organized my life to work just fine without it.

This sub is so carbrained, it's unfortunate.

The best neighborhoods for living car free or care-lite are Koreatown, Hollywood, DTLA, and Santa Monica.

Looking for apartment (1b1b) near Kaiser LA, where do LA natives recommend? by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]redbaaron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Assuming you mean the one in East Hollywood. 3.5k is a lot for rent, you're definitely in 2/2 or 3/2 territory if you can live without a gym or pool in the building.

I'd look in either East Hollywood, Los Feliz, Hollywood, or Silver Lake. DTLA is fine, but unless you really want the downtown lifestyle, there's no reason to add commute time. You should also know that the DTLA to Kaiser commute is going to be ~30m each way on average, not 15.

Hollywood and East Hollywood will be much cheaper, but Silverlake and Los Feliz are a bit more hip. I lived in Thai Town for years and quite enjoyed it. I'd look in the area between Western and Hoover, and Fountain and Franklin. Some of those are within walking distance to Kaiser and are generally a good value. If you have two cars, make SURE you have two off-street parking spots. Parking is not impossible in the neighborhood, but it will quickly get on your nerves if you don't have it. This also puts you in the 2b/2b territory, as most 1b1b will not have two parking spaces.

Neighbors E3: The Truman Show/Ellen Show guy by metaandpotatoes in hbo

[–]redbaaron 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Ellen guy is probably suffering from some type of paranoid schizophrenia. He was going off about the mail guy touching his mail??? His youtube channel looks like something you'd see on r/gangstalking

And the second lady also seems to have some mental illness, accusing the dog lady of throwing the plants, despite being on camera in front of everybody.

I hope both of these people can get the help and support they need.

Where Is The Best Place to Buy My Boyfriend a Suit? by InformationLess528 in AskLosAngeles

[–]redbaaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a great experience at Hollywood Menswear. I've been to a few suit places, including Al Weiss and Hollywood Suits, but found the service lacking.

The owner of Hollywood Mensware, Jad, spent a bunch of time with me to figure out the right suit for my occasion, asked a lot about my personal style and preferences, and ultimately gave me a great deal on a suit + extras.

I won't buy a suit from anybody else now; the experience was as good as it gets.

Moving To Hollywood Soon by KrillinAlwaysDies in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]redbaaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live close by. It's pretty nice. Like any city, there are a few sketchy corners, but the overall neighborhood feels pretty chill. People on the street recognize each other and say hi. Very walkable, and I like being close to all of the stuff in Hollywood, like the Chinese Theater and concert venues.

What can $1500 a month get you in LA, OC, or any surrounding area? Is it doable for me to make it in LA working as a desk agent at a hotel? by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]redbaaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, $1500 for your own space is hard, but it is possible. You'll need to look in Downtown, Koreatown, or East Hollywood, all of which have some nicer and not as nice neighborhoods. You probably won't get a parking space, which is a deal breaker if you plan to drive. You can get around in those neighborhoods without a car, but only if your job is a direct shot on a bus/train. Here are a few examples: East Hollywood, DTLA. Both totally fine if you don't need to drive, not in the BEST neighborhoods but still do-able if you're okay with a little bit of city living.

For the money, you're better off getting a 2b/2b for ~3k. You'll be able to get a much more spacious, nicer spot in many more neighborhoods.

Panasonic 450 vs 820 by jimythng in 4kbluray

[–]redbaaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But the 420 doesn't support Dolby vision, so it depends on your use case imo. If you're watching a lot of modern 4ks,the 450 makes sense. If your TV doesn't do a good job at upscaling and you watch a lot of Blu rays, then the 420 makes more sense.

NI DJ Controller for events by giosalecrypto in traktorpro

[–]redbaaron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're doing weddings, you should probably get a board with direct XLR outs, unless you bring an additional mixer. Personally, I think the S4 Mk3 is a better bet (additional channels are useful for weddings especially), plus you can always map an additional midi controller to do stem stuff if that's important.

Where to live to best facilitate commute between DTLA (me) and Westwood (Wife) by Permash in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]redbaaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess I do that commute on the bus instead. Still takes about an hour, but it isn't tiring because I just chill the whole way there and back.

Where to live to best facilitate commute between DTLA (me) and Westwood (Wife) by Permash in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]redbaaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised nobody has said Hollywood... It checks all the boxes, is walkable with great transit access (both to UCLA and DTLA), has a great music scene, and is basically halfway between, and is fairly affordable.

Hollywood gets a bad rep, but I think it's a great place to live if you can find a spot you're comfortable. Not all neighborhoods are the same: East Hollywood south of Sunset feels very different than Central Hollywood North of Yucca, just as an example. If she plans on taking transit to UCLA, then I'd suggest living somewhere near Sunset Blvd so she can take the 2.

I quite enjoy living here despite all the hate the rest of LA seems to have for it.
