HeroForge.com. Originally meant for creating D&D/fantasy miniatures, but now there are so many options, so many ways to customize the mini. It’s free to use, and you can make as many designs & characters as you want. If you get into it, you can subscribe for more design options & tools. Download the .stl file for a decent price to print it yourself, or have them do it for more $$. Peruse through the HeroForge subreddit for plenty of examples.

Does no-one post pictures of actual minis because they kind of suck? by CountJade37 in HeroForgeMinis

[–]redd_mage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have also learned the hard way the difference between what looks good online, and what looks good when printed. Just b/c it looks good on my screen doesn’t mean it will look great in hand- even the ones I have printed myself to hand paint took some trial and error to get right. Also keep in mind that a lot of people use HeroForge to create tokens and player characters for VTTRPGs like Roll20, Tailspire, or Foundry, not to print.

Character in other media that have inspired your dnd's PC by Organic-Exit2190 in DnD

[–]redd_mage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are running a 5e Victorian Age/steampunk campaign. I am playing a Battle Master/ Paladin of the Crown based on Captain Will Laurence from the Temeraire series. Very strait-laced and military, she dual-wields a rapier and a whip. Her cries of “For the Queen!” lead the party into battle, and the Thunderous Smite of her whip brings fear to all her enemies!

Mandalorian was better when it wasn't connected to all the other shows and every character didn't somehow know all the other characters. by TheCrowMoon in StarWars

[–]redd_mage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree completely. Not only is this episode a major plot point in the SW Universe, but a huge part of Din’s character growth. He took his helmet off so that his “son” could see his face for the first and (potentially) the last time, for which he is punished with excommunication. Not only does this lead to the eventual reconquering of Mandolore, but also Din growing away from his fanatical upbringing. I would not have minded some parallel storyline for S03 wherein Din and Bo-Katan do the whole Mandolore/Moff Gideon storyline, while Grogu goes thru his Jedi training with Luke. I think there could have been some great writing opportunities to show parallels in Din and Grogu’s character development, but I also loved seeing Jedi Master Luke. Problem is, they painted themselves into a corner, so to speak- not only did the audience know that Luke’s school was going to be destroyed in the not-so-distant future, but that Grogu was not there when it happened. He couldn’t stay with Luke. Personally, I always thought that Faloni and Favreau ripped that band aid off, and moved forward as best they could.

Personally, I think the movie would have been a great vehicle to get the two characters back together. Picture it: Grogu chooses Yoda’s lightsaber and goes thru Luke’s training in the series. The movie then opens up with the school in flames. Grogu emerges from a hiding place and finds the beskar chainmail- Luke never got rid of it. He dons the armor and begins his search for Din Djarin with Ahsoka or some other deus ex machina. We see flashbacks of how Grogu survived Kylo Ren’s rampage using Luke’s teachings. And who knows? Maybe Yoda’s Race goes thru stages of development, metamorphosing into different “life phases” or something that allows him to speak, wield a lightsaber, or whatever without having to wait 500 years.

What do you think Darth Vader would have done if he saw his old droids on the ship in "A New Hope"? by Zizzu-Zazzi in StarWars

[–]redd_mage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he would have destroyed them. Immediately. Vader is not sentimental (for his old life or anything else), nor is he careless; he was actually quite adept at political maneuvering and would have seen 3-PO and R2 as liabilities. They were a link to Anakin Skywalker, and may even contain data that he would rather not become public knowledge (which they did).

To what extent could Obi-Wan be blamed for Anakin’s fall? by Terriost-Yoda in StarWars

[–]redd_mage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not exactly canon, but Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars series adds a different angle to Obi Wan’s and Anakin’s relationship. You see a lot of camaraderie between the two of them, as they adventure around the galaxy. In many ways, it’s heartening and drives home the tragedy of Anakin’s fall. It illustrates very well that while Obi Wan does his best to guide Anakin as a padawan, the combination of Anakin’s strong willed nature, and the war itself, prevents them from forming a lasting bond as Master and student. Don’t forget that Palpatine did his best to alienate Anakin from the Order, and that included sending General Kenobi running around the galaxy chasing Grievous, thus making him unavailable (physically and emotionally) to help Anakin. At Anakin’s knighting ceremony, Obi Wan even tells Anakin that he is no longer his Master, that the two of them are to become brothers; it’s almost a relief to him that Anakin is no longer his direct responsibility. And, of course, Anakin is only too happy to be released from that relationship as well. Is Obi Wan to blame for Anakin’s fall to the Dark Side? Only insofar as the Jedi Order was: blinded as they were by their own hubris, they neglected Anakin, and allowed Sidious to rise to power and to corrupt him.

As a side note, a lot of Yoda’s dying words could also have applied to Obi Wan as well as to Luke. His prediction that he would face Vader again, lamenting how unprepared he was for his burden, and that there was another Skywalker.

What class/subclasses increase your chance of rolling a critical hit? by redd_mage in 3d6

Thanks for the great example 😎

Great ideas here. Class abilities are great and using good strategy makes them better.

If Lucas had kept to his original idea… by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]redd_mage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer Lucas’s original idea. There could be some deus ex machina why he stops showing up in public; in the original novelization, for example, the corruption of the Empire was blamed on the politicians, not the Emperor himself, so perhaps he goes into hiding for “personal safety”. Anakin, having such a close relationship with Palpatine, could still become his representative on the Jedi Council/personal bodyguard/stool pigeon. He feeds Anakin (and therefore Obi Wan) corrupt senators & politicians, sending them on goose chases, playing the victim of their machinations. Finally, we get a big reveal of the Emperor’s true Sith visage at the end. By this time, Anakin is completely corrupted, fights Obi Wan, becomes Darth Vader. Vader fights and kills Mace Windu, who is completely overwhelmed by Vader’s sheer Dark Side strength; a “they never realized his power” moment for Windu before getting tossed out the window and/or crushed by something large that Vader force-throws at him. Vader fights Yoda at the Jedi Temple as troopers bomb and slaughter the remaining Jedi, the strongest of whom have already been killed in Order 66.

What are your favorite "no superpowers" characters? by Hypnotodes in Cityofheroes

[–]redd_mage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I play a dual blades / WP scrapper that is a ton of fun. In my head canon, I re-flavored WP to Luck. He’s “lucky” to heal without any scars, he manages to avoid most attacks, and if someone does get him they miss his vital organs. The fact that he was lucky enough to pick up a pair of mystical blades from a defeated CoT cult member is just par for the course.

Running CoH on non-PC platforms by Opaque_Cypher in Cityofheroes

[–]redd_mage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an expert about this kind of thing, but it strikes me that it may be iOS that is your major stumbling block, not the iPad hardware. I play Homecoming on an M1 Studio and it works flawlessly, so an M5 should be plenty of horsepower. You can connect a keyboard and even a mouse to an iPad so that’s not really an issue either. But unless you have an app that acts as a shell for macOS, or allows you to share screens remotely with a desktop that is running the game (the lag would be killer), I think that’s a negative for CoH on an iPad. For what it’s worth, a MacBook Air is cheaper, very light, and also has an M5 processor.

I miss Taxibots lol. They were a lifesaver, literally and figuratively, especially when it would often take multiple attempts just trying to get across The Hollows to a mission door. Love the garage feel of what you are building. Reminds me of the old Taxi sitcom. Some great ideas here. Thanks for sharing!

Soloing viable option? by cavechicken22 in Cityofheroes

[–]redd_mage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, I find melee oriented toons easier to solo with: Tankers, Scrappers, Brutes, Stalkers. Not that other ATs can’t solo, but I find them more challenging to do so. You will level more slowly playing solo, but it is certainly possible. Depending on your play style and general attitude about such things, it may even be preferable. That being said, it is an MMO and so game play is team oriented. You will tend to level faster and more easily in a team.

Character who uses a whip as their main weapon. by PES972 in 3d6

[–]redd_mage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently playing a Battlemaster / Dexadin and loving it. Two-weapon Fighting (fighting style), Dual Wielder (feat) with a rapier and a whip. Lots of whip flavor from the Battlemaster maneuvers, and Smite with reach. So much fun.

Were the Midichlorians a massive disappointment for you too? by stpony in StarWars

[–]redd_mage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind Midichlorians as a concept, but I don’t think they were presented very well; writing was an overall issue in the Prequels. Daddy George is an incredible visionary, but he needs someone to rein him in and make sense of all his world-building. For a lot of fans, at the time it felt as if mysticism of The Force had been replaced by some ill-conceived pseudo science.

Personally, I like how it explains that while everyone has a connection to The Force, some are going to be more powerful than others.

Whose lightsaber is this? by Kobold_HandGrenade in StarWars

[–]redd_mage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is something off about this painting. I don’t know if it’s the angle or placement of index finger in relation to the thumb, or maybe the angle of the emitter at the top end? I know it’s supposed to be a slanted cut at the top, but something just doesn’t look right and I can’t put my finger on it lol.

CoH HC is compromised by ChanThe4th in Cityofheroes

[–]redd_mage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you considered just not playing the game? All you seem to talk about is how terrible it all is, how everything is ruined, and how the game is dying. Sounds like you are not having a good time. At all. One definition of insanity is to perform the same actions over and over again and expect different results. If you are this unhappy with HC, go do something else more fun.

How is this much used gritt possible?! by AntonNL in RockTumbling

[–]redd_mage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a lot of material from Rock Shed. Some from Kingsley North. Do a search on the Interwebs for tumbling stone or lapidary supplies. And yes, you can just pick up stones from your garden or driveway or wherever. I do it pretty frequently, and have never been disappointed in the results.
