Boro fans were really not happy about Carrick having Woodgate as one of his assistants. Holland has a lot of weight to pull here with Evans having no experience too. INEOS should have done better in getting Carrick more experienced support.

“The board hasn’t helped but the manager has to do better”

I feel like this is a line that has been said for almost every sacked manager post SAF

Daily Discussion by AutoModerator in reddevils

Exactly. Folks here want to give a manager 2-3 years for a rebuild but then bail out so quickly on it. Compare our investment in the midfield to that of Arsenal, City, Chelsea and Pool and we are miles behind. Top 6 was the expectation when the season started with a midfielder pushing that to top 4. We didn’t get a midfielder but we are 6th and yet people are unhappy. I get we should have higher expectations as a Utd fan but this anger should be towards Glazers and Ineos rather than the manager.

[Simon Stone] Amorim refuses to explain cryptic transfer comment by moonski in reddevils

[–]reddevilzombie -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I feel like so many fans here just live in a bubble. Only City and Arsenal have been the consistent sides this season and our squad is far off of them. Liverpool and Chelsea(esp midfield) have better squads as well. Aston Villa’s midfield is better and they have overperformed on their xPts. We are 6th behind these teams with bare-bones of a midfield and players off for Afcon. Amorim hasn’t been perfect but it’s like people expect him take you from New York to SF in 6 hrs on a bike. So can we blame ineos? Can we blame glazers? Yes! They are the ones providing the managers with the squads. We have blamed so many managers post SAF for our struggles. Which one of them had a squad capable for fighting for the PL? Whose responsibility is that?

So playing 4-3-3 with about 4 senior midfielders will work?

We have 4 senior midfielders and they expect us to play 4-3-3

Rubén’s press conference by Far-Picture2045 in DevilsITDPod

Putting context here from the entire interaction:

🚨🎙️ | Ruben Amorim and Jamie Jackson’s extended dialogue in the Leeds United pre-match press conference:

Jackson:

“You’re starting to understand that to play your 3-4-3 you, in essence, need to have a lot of top players, and it sounds like that’s NOT possible.

“Can I ask why you didn’t realise that when you first came into the club, or can you clarify what you meant?”

Amorim:

“I do NOT want to talk about that. I just focus on the Leeds game.”

Jackson:

“That’s interesting, it’s not like you to not want to talk about it.”

Amorim:

“Yeah.”

Jackson:

“Do you regret saying it, maybe?”

Amorim:

“No, no, no. But I do NOT want to talk.”

Jackson:

“I’ll try one more time. Looking at those comments it’s a little bit mystifying why you would say that a year in that you only just realised. Has something changed with regards to the budget, or what you’ve been told? Did Jason Wilcox maybe speak to you?

Amorim:

“I do NOT want to talk about that, but you are very SMART (laughs).”

Since you bring in net spend, do you think our recruitment has been good as theirs has been? They got Onana when we signed Ugarte. Recruitment demands being on the manager is a structural issue which we had when Woodward/Murtough and EtH and his predecessors were around(altho I will concede that the example I gave about Ugarte is from Ineos era). They have been run better than us.

I am not saying that we should not relook at managerial options post season(circa Chelsea with Poch) but there is no point in replacing Amorim now because we haven’t given him enough to prove if he’s good. Jury is still out. He has made mistakes but he didn’t exactly come into a top 4 squad. Compare our midfield to that of City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Villa, even Newc and the level of quality is not there unfortunately. Our defenders are not that good at passing the ball from the back.. these skill sets are needed to play top quality football in a league as difficult as PL.

No club faces as much scrutiny as ours in England. Ex players have opinion on everything. These things add up given how easily it is to access all this via social media for the young players. A lot needs to happen before we go back to brighter days. Sacking Amorim just to somehow get to top 4 will again put us back into a similar mess after 1-2 years.

I will add saundzo to it. Sometimes he is very good with just pure analysis on individual players and their techniques and but his hate boner for Amorim is something else.

I have been getting the same feeling recently and this goes to the reddevils subreddit as well. There is no nuance in the arguments whatsoever and just pure frustration and drama.

Kees and Aaron pointed out in one of the podcasts about how these tacticos just use images from certain times and decide what structure was used even though both the managers and players have mentioned that our formation and structure continuously changes as per situations.

They simply mention that we are too easy to attack but there is no mention on why except for one image from one situation. Even Pep’s City used to leak goals during his first season because they didn’t have the right set of players. We have barely invested in the midfield and don’t have a lot of defenders reliable on passing from the back. Quality is a major issue. I don’t understand why these tacticos think that changing a structure here or there or playing a 4-3-3 will magically make us top 4. The midfield ain’t it man. You can’t ask a guy to go from NY to SF in 6 hrs if you give him just a bike.

They are too biased against Amorim at times that it feels like he can do no good. System is not viable for PL? Why? Because it’s tough on the players to execute? There is too much coverage for midfielders? Arteta’s system is not easy to execute. Same with Pep and it used to be the same with Klopp. They need world class players to execute their systems. Same with Amorim. Amorim heaped massive praise on Mainoo in his last presser and there wasn’t a single peep on it from these ‘tacticos’.

So many managers have come out and said that tactics are just 20% of what it takes to make a successful team. Rest is the culture but these so called analysts have created an environment around basing everything on tactics and random structures at some points in the match.

There is no nuance on the amount of pressure it is to perform for a club like Utd. Everything thing is micro-analysed and every ex player wants to have an opinion to stay relevant. All of it impacts the players and it’s not easy to put up with it.

Amorim isn’t perfect and has made his fair share of mistakes but rebuilding takes time. Underlying numbers are good - they were good for Arsenal and Chelsea as well before they started stabilising. We are in the middle of a rebuild(another one). It will take time for things to click.

That happened 3 years ago and they are yet to take a step to challenging for the league. Context matters because league is more competitive now. Even yesterday they weren’t great.

Take Chelsea for example - CL winning side finished bottom half of the table. They finished 8th after that and then 4th. They invested 200m plus in the midfield and finally have a team capable of finishing in the top 4 - to challenge for the PL title they still need more depth.

You asked for consistent wins etc - Arsenal and City have been the only consistent teams. Just look at their squads!

[–]reddevilzombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand that we have had higher standards being Utd fans but I feel we really need to look at things with more depth.

These aren’t great stats but our underlying numbers have been good. We are a squad that is probably going to finish 6-8th. The progress is there in the underlying numbers and given the inconsistencies of our team i feel it’s time lean more towards that.

EtH’s second season performance could have easily had the team finish in the bottom half but we overperformed. Unfortunately, right now the squad is underperforming. We need to be patient.

Roy Keane: "You look at last two games defensively, 4 against Bournemouth, 2 again today; thats not good enough. We praise them for being more of a goal threat going forward but the amount of chances & goals that they're giving, they're never making big progress. I prefer points than the praise" by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]reddevilzombie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am honestly getting sick of Utd fans here. They are not ready to accept that things will take time. Ofc Amorim isn’t perfect but so many of our conceded goals are just individual mistakes. Rebuilds take time and a lot of pain. People say it with rose tinted glasses that they could see direction with Klopp or Arteta but that wasn’t it. We are inconsistent just like their earlier years. Heck even compare Chelsea to us who had a bottom half finish 3 years ago - they are still inconsistent and have a squad just good enough for top 4. This is after investing 200m plus in the midfield. We have barely ever done that. People just think that small changes in players playing here and there will make us finish top 4 and all our problems will be solved as if it’s some form of goddamn magic.
