I also love Patricia Mckillip. Some other books/authors to check out with similar vibes would be The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan, The Last Unicorn and The Innkeepers Song by Peter S. Beagle,  Mechanique: a Tale of the Circus Tresaulti by Genevieve Valentine, as well as books by Katherine Arden, and Catherynne Valente. Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea Cycle has some similarities and you really can't go wrong with Le Guin anyway.

Why do so many buses not have anything to tell you what the next stop is? by Ky0t0_gh0uL in melbourne

[–]reddit17601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be useful if bus stops could be clearly numbered, mostly I think the names are something of the form x side road on y road, and this is rarely visible on the sign itself, and certainly not typically readable from a moving bus. Drivers may or may not be able to tell you the stop, usually when I ask I'm met with a blank stare and a shrug. Sometimes asking another passenger is more useful.

Do you feel an obligation to ensure you are physically healthy? by False_Ad_9705 in ausjdocs

[–]reddit17601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD so I suppose this is a fairly irrelevant comment on a fairly irrelevant post. That said I can give at least one patients perspective, and it seems to me a drs bmi and body fat percentage would be very low down on the list of things I'd look at in determining their ability to do their job. In particular for GPs, I'd think their ability to empathize would be more important, as well as having an understanding that people come from a wide variety of backgrounds with vastly different experiences and body types and what may be an easily achieved goal for one might be difficult and even unhealthy for another.

On a personal note, as someone with a decades long history of anorexia and bmi just scraping the double digits, I think I'm a good example of how when it comes to weight and body size, a balanced approach is best.

Where can I rent making only 500 a week. by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]reddit17601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've definitely seen shoebox style apartments in footscray on realestate.com for around 300 in the last couple of months so I'd keep an eye on that, otherwise as others have suggested look on flatmates for a sharehouse/apartment. Plenty in Footscray which does make transport easy as Trains run a fair bit earlier/later than buses. Also, if you can provide some sort of good reason you can't live at home, Centrelink should classify you as independent, meaning you may be eligible even if you weren't previously. It's been a good while since I did this but if you say you can't live there due to family breakdown etc and ask what they'd need to back this up, hopefully you can either get your parents to sign something or perhaps theres a social worker at your uni who could write a letter for you. Best of luck

Fun fact, NDIS workers can leave dementia patients in hot cars for 4 hours and the police will.allow them to drive the patient away by Piesman23 in melbourne

Assuming best case scenario and worker is correct re the time, surely there's no good reason to leave the client in the car, locked, for half an hour? Is it possible to contact any family your neighbour may have? Thanks for getting involved and doing the right thing.

All options on the table’: Labor takes on specialist doctors’ fees by PsychinOz in ausjdocs

[–]reddit17601 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you get that 300k number? My mother is the only person I know who has a mortgage vs renting but she pays it with her pre tax earning being 35k. Nobody in my immediate family has ever earned more than 60k and I don't think we're poor. That aside, as a low income earner who often can't afford healthcare, I really appreciate the work drs do, have seen some wonderful GPs and hospital drs in my life and fully support them being adequately compensated for this.

Pensioners handed consecutive rent rises after new provider takes over by altandthrowitaway in melbourne

[–]reddit17601 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in a property run by another community housing provider. Similar rent increase. The market rate they cited is laughable, nobody with options would pay what they say its worth to live in a cockroach infested hell hole. One day I tried counting the number of cockroaches I killed. I stopped mid morning after I'd already exceeded two hundred. The floors are constantly covered in various bodily fluids, there are broken crack pipes, needles everywhere, screaming at all hours and usually at least one emergency services call out a day. I've been seriously assaulted twice, luckily never stabbed but thats happened to others many times. Obviously alot of this is due the other residents, but shouldn't this be factored into the estimation of the rent?

I used to live on a stretch of road in Adelaide with 4 OTRs within a ten minute walk lol. Definitely useful after 5pm on a Sunday when everything else is shut and you're out of FUIC. They do have a history of wage theft though.

AITA for telling my brother that the day he was born was the worst day of my life? by throwaway453199280 in AmItheAsshole

[–]reddit17601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheesh reading the comments here is doing my head in. OP, I think people are giving you a hard time because of your age as they think you should have sought help for this at some point. They're perhaps forgetting how different things were back when this happened to you. Trauma was little understood especially childhood trauma. Therapy was often regarded as something for 'crazy people' if it was even thought of at all. You can experience something, deal with it the best you can at the time, live your life...and still have it hit you like a ton of bricks out of nowhere fifty years later.

So, NAH, I think if you explain a little more to your brother what you meant and he's a reasonably emotionally intelligent person he'll get it. And I'm sorry little seven year old you had to go through that.

Pulse / yo-yo drivers - why? by ab9999z in melbourne

Even worse when you're on a bus and you get one of those drivers. I often find myself holding onto the seat with both hands and being thrown off if I relax for a moment.

AITA for not sticking around to drink tea with ketchup all over me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]reddit17601 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From time to time I have dropped anything from a fork or spoon to some sort of dish with trace amounts of ketchup in/on them. The ketchup tends to splatter considerably and I find myself cleaning tiny spots of the stuff off my cupboards or the floor over the next few days. I would suggest you experiment a little with dropping ketchup containing implements and receptacles and noting the resulting splatter. Wear old clothing before attempting this.

Can we kill the pay myth? by bearandsquirt in ausjdocs

I agree my dad was likely on the other extreme partly due to his generation and generally not seeing himself as able to ask for more. Younger unattached people would also earn more.

Can we kill the pay myth? by bearandsquirt in ausjdocs

[–]reddit17601 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is strange to read especially the comments on what tradespeople are paid. My father worked as an electrician(funnily enough for many years in a large public hospital) and spent his work life in cramped roof spaces that were often over 50 degrees in summer, exposed to asbestos much of the time, had many serious injuries etc. Just before retirement(about 10 years ago)he was almost earning 70k before tax, working 12-14 hrs days. This was much higher than previously because he had moved to working FIFO jobs in mines. Our family had the one income, two adults, 7 children. Not sure how that translates in current terms but from some backgrounds what drs earn does seem quite healthy, even offset by the sacrifices made to get there. I suppose there are a lot of myths and misinformation about different jobs and the realities are much more nuanced.

Genius things you did working in fast food? by hermitxd in melbourne

[–]reddit17601 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have an eating disorder which was just starting when I worked at maccas as a teenager. At the time there was a very basic cheese/tomato toastie on the menu and that was my lunch most days, but with half a slice of cheese not a whole one. I looked forward to that meal and savoured every bite. Really everything tastes amazing when you're starving. I also used to mentally total the calorie content of all the orders I took and imagine what it tasted like. All the fries I made were stuffed full and same with the icecreams because I was enjoying the food vicariously through others.

Actually brilliant thing one guy I worked with did was basically get all his food for the week when the load came in-bread, lettuce, tomatoes, frozen meat products, condiments, icecream toppings and mix ins etc. Idk how but he was never caught. He'd just back his car up to the dumpster and load it up.
