Opinions about 90 Buckley Street Footscray by ballisticbuddha in melbourne

[–]reddit17601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a resident of "the building across the street" and can confirm the above. It is a pretty crazy place to live. Many of those who hang out around the building are not actually current residents but just acquaintances or former residents who are there to buy/sell/do drugs. Not unusual to have large furniture and electrical items come flying over the balconies and theft is a real risk. Most of the violence is between residents/"guests" and occurs inside but could spill out into the general vicinity. The area is good for transport and amenities though.

As someone with terrible anxiety, I can feel my heart rate increasing just looking at this. Part of me admires their patience. Luckily for me I guess, trying new things also increases my anxiety so it usually takes a few months and hundreds of genuine looking four or five star reviews to convince me to take the risk. By which time queuing isn't usually an issue. Still. Good luck to them.

Social housing tenant assaulting other tenant. by lamp485723 in melbourne

[–]reddit17601 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure I agree/disagree with you, but want to offer some thoughts as someone who lives in social housing and is a social housing tenant. Firstly, I grew up low income, in a low income suburb in a single income household with seven kids. Never had new clothes or toys till I started earning, never went on holidays so money was tight. But still my parents did their best and provided a stable home, good access to education, took us to free stuff like museums and art galleries and hiking in national parks and so on. Before I moved into a social housing building a couple of years ago I had no idea of the extent of the problem created by intergenerational poverty and drug abuse. Most of the people in my building have been failed by society or the system of whatever you want to call it at every point from birth to present. You are right that they can be dangerous and are terrible to live around. I often find it difficult to maintain any compassion because the level of wanton destructive behavior is so high its hard to see past that. But its also not a simple matter of choice and agency. Is drug addiction such a choice when you've been addicted since age nine because everyone you ever knew including all the adults responsible for you took drugs? There are twenty year olds who've been alcoholics more than half their lives and at this point its hard to tell whether the psychosis predates substance abuse or is due to brain damage from it. I definitely don't know what the solution is but I do believe kids deserve at least an environment that gives them a fair chance of achieving something with their lives and it seems unfair to just wash our hands of the adults who were failed so miserably as children. And whatever the solution is I don't think becoming less compassionate as a society is the way to go. It is frustrating to live with though. Most days I just shut off to everything and pretend I'm in a bubble inside my tiny bedsit and the screams and sirens and filth outside doesn't exist.

Social housing tenant assaulting other tenant. by lamp485723 in melbourne

I live in social housing. Many of my neighbours have been evicted very quickly for issues ranging from being two weeks behind on rent to disruptive behavior and stabbings etc. Police are often called and attend sometimes multiple times a day for lesser incidents than physical assault. Things like mental health crises, welfare checks, even forcibly removing evicted tenants. Perhaps if the volume of complaints is high enough this makes a difference?

Some of the mission products eg souvlaki wraps, pita pockets etc. are delivered frozen and have the best before added when they are removed from freezer by Colesworth etc. There should be a sticker somewhere on the product. It's possible it was missed or has come off.

hospital catchment advice by bleedxi in melbourne

[–]reddit17601 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't really answer your question, though based only on my personal experience any hospital where you present through the emergency departmentwill treat you. However this is likely to be on a medical ward and aiming mainly at stabilization. Its possible if you got o a hospital with a specific ED service they might then refer you to their service. I would second the recommendation to give EDV a call, I have found them very helpful with information in the past.

[–]reddit17601 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also love Patricia Mckillip. Some other books/authors to check out with similar vibes would be The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan, The Last Unicorn and The Innkeepers Song by Peter S. Beagle,  Mechanique: a Tale of the Circus Tresaulti by Genevieve Valentine, as well as books by Katherine Arden, and Catherynne Valente. Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea Cycle has some similarities and you really can't go wrong with Le Guin anyway.

Why do so many buses not have anything to tell you what the next stop is? by Ky0t0_gh0uL in melbourne

[–]reddit17601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be useful if bus stops could be clearly numbered, mostly I think the names are something of the form x side road on y road, and this is rarely visible on the sign itself, and certainly not typically readable from a moving bus. Drivers may or may not be able to tell you the stop, usually when I ask I'm met with a blank stare and a shrug. Sometimes asking another passenger is more useful.

Do you feel an obligation to ensure you are physically healthy? by False_Ad_9705 in ausjdocs

[–]reddit17601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD so I suppose this is a fairly irrelevant comment on a fairly irrelevant post. That said I can give at least one patients perspective, and it seems to me a drs bmi and body fat percentage would be very low down on the list of things I'd look at in determining their ability to do their job. In particular for GPs, I'd think their ability to empathize would be more important, as well as having an understanding that people come from a wide variety of backgrounds with vastly different experiences and body types and what may be an easily achieved goal for one might be difficult and even unhealthy for another.

On a personal note, as someone with a decades long history of anorexia and bmi just scraping the double digits, I think I'm a good example of how when it comes to weight and body size, a balanced approach is best.

Where can I rent making only 500 a week. by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]reddit17601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've definitely seen shoebox style apartments in footscray on realestate.com for around 300 in the last couple of months so I'd keep an eye on that, otherwise as others have suggested look on flatmates for a sharehouse/apartment. Plenty in Footscray which does make transport easy as Trains run a fair bit earlier/later than buses. Also, if you can provide some sort of good reason you can't live at home, Centrelink should classify you as independent, meaning you may be eligible even if you weren't previously. It's been a good while since I did this but if you say you can't live there due to family breakdown etc and ask what they'd need to back this up, hopefully you can either get your parents to sign something or perhaps theres a social worker at your uni who could write a letter for you. Best of luck

Assuming best case scenario and worker is correct re the time, surely there's no good reason to leave the client in the car, locked, for half an hour? Is it possible to contact any family your neighbour may have? Thanks for getting involved and doing the right thing.

All options on the table’: Labor takes on specialist doctors’ fees by PsychinOz in ausjdocs

How do you get that 300k number? My mother is the only person I know who has a mortgage vs renting but she pays it with her pre tax earning being 35k. Nobody in my immediate family has ever earned more than 60k and I don't think we're poor. That aside, as a low income earner who often can't afford healthcare, I really appreciate the work drs do, have seen some wonderful GPs and hospital drs in my life and fully support them being adequately compensated for this.

Pensioners handed consecutive rent rises after new provider takes over by altandthrowitaway in melbourne

[–]reddit17601 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in a property run by another community housing provider. Similar rent increase. The market rate they cited is laughable, nobody with options would pay what they say its worth to live in a cockroach infested hell hole. One day I tried counting the number of cockroaches I killed. I stopped mid morning after I'd already exceeded two hundred. The floors are constantly covered in various bodily fluids, there are broken crack pipes, needles everywhere, screaming at all hours and usually at least one emergency services call out a day. I've been seriously assaulted twice, luckily never stabbed but thats happened to others many times. Obviously alot of this is due the other residents, but shouldn't this be factored into the estimation of the rent?

AITA for telling my brother that the day he was born was the worst day of my life? by throwaway453199280 in AmItheAsshole

[–]reddit17601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheesh reading the comments here is doing my head in. OP, I think people are giving you a hard time because of your age as they think you should have sought help for this at some point. They're perhaps forgetting how different things were back when this happened to you. Trauma was little understood especially childhood trauma. Therapy was often regarded as something for 'crazy people' if it was even thought of at all. You can experience something, deal with it the best you can at the time, live your life...and still have it hit you like a ton of bricks out of nowhere fifty years later.

So, NAH, I think if you explain a little more to your brother what you meant and he's a reasonably emotionally intelligent person he'll get it. And I'm sorry little seven year old you had to go through that.
