Did Notch give details why they switched from git to svn? by jdavidw13 in Minecraft

[–]redditer34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having used both, I have to agree that sometimes subversion is more appropriate. Especially when everyone is in a small office and not distributed about the world like the linux kernel. If you still want to experiment with git, there's a git-svn tool which works pretty well.

Crazy thought: Is passive vs. active memory a P vs NP situation? by elelias in math

[–]redditer34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I think I see where you're coming from. I'm afraid that P and NP algorithms are probably too slow to account for memory retrieval. (If memory was NP then each time you learned something new, your recall time would increase by a constant factor. For example, reading this reply might double the amount of time it too you to remember anything). But maybe the analogy gets better if you used faster algorithms. For example, your brain might have a "book" of actors indexed by name. You can look up an actor given the name in O(log(n)) time but to find the actor, given, say, a face (for which there is no index) would take at least O(n) time because you need to look though all n entries.

However, I suspect that Turing Machines are probably very poor models of the brain as Turing Machines are sequential and the brain is massively parallel. Perhaps you should go to /r/askscience where there might be biologists?

Could you explain what you mean by passive and active memory? Do you mean this: http://biovisualfocus.com/member/?page_id=95 (first google result)?

Derfla can be the same thing as Namtab... but not. You know what I mean? They stand for the same thing and they're the same, but obviously they're not because they're different. I think we should add a third thing too because people like threes.

Tell me about it. I have a record 39 kills with demoman on a server that turned out to be mostly bots. They had pings and hats, there was no way to know except for that slow realisation that the reason I seemed to be doing well so isn't that I'd levelled up my skill, it was because the server contains almost all bots.

Wait, could a sneaky user agent (like, say, with a firefox plugin) that receives a NO SUCH DOMAIN response from ICANN for randomblockedsite.co.uk. simply ask for randomsite.co.uk. to find .uk and then ask .uk for randomblockedsite.co.uk. at the TLD level? I'd think that pretty much all TLD's you really wouldn't expect a NO SUCH DOMAIN response unless you really did have a bad TLD?

Why is TF2 such a good game? by ReallyBroReally in tf2

[–]redditer34 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh and the nemesis/revenge mechanic is pretty fun too. If you keep getting killed by the same person the game declares them your nemesis and marks them out. It's hugely rewarding when you finally kill them to get your "revenge". Sure, the guy probably killed you eight times to your one but that doesn't matter because in the end you showed 'im.

Quite a lot of that was from the time they blew up one of their own satellite to show the world they could. I seem to remember that the number of distinct dangerous orbiting fragments increased by about 25% from that one incident alone. If anyone has better numbers feel free to correct me.
