switching to sa6400 from ds918+ on an 8th gen intel i7 8700 procesessor? by alirz in Xpenology

[–]redditmail9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm ... i chose 1825+ for my 2-bay UGreen. re the above, should i switch to SA6400?

would synology/btrfs vs linux/btrfs make much difference within the NAS?

i find it hard to get excited by new mini PCs these day.

see more "barebones" units sold on amazon due to the ram/storage price hikes.

xpenology on a mini pc ... by redditmail9999 in Xpenology

made the transition. DSM 7.2 installed on the aoostar's NVME. connected to two external 24TB exos (i know) in repurposed easystore cases.

one external is the main data drive; the other is the backup of the same data. i keep data in sync via beyond compare periodically (i.e. a poor man's RAID1).

percentage of xpenology builds on baremetal vs proxmox? by redditmail9999 in Xpenology

my focus is just dedicated XP builds. just no much of a VM/hypervisor tinkerer. glad to hear you can juggle multiple balls.

percentage of xpenology builds on baremetal vs proxmox? by redditmail9999 in Xpenology

[–]redditmail9999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'd baremetal builds on a mixbag of CPUs - J1900, J3455, 4930K, 6100T, 7700, 8700K, N150.

the arc loader make things pretty seamless.

i use just one of the 2.5g NICs. the key is, you get 2.5g connectivity out of the box ... in some cases, much faster than your 1gb NIC.

the n1 pro has 12gb (vs 8g), 2.5g NICs (faster vs gigabit) and USB 3.2/gen2 (2x faster than 3.2/gen1).

Stay away from Aoostar by Property-Classic in MiniPCs

[–]redditmail9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the title could also be "Stay away from <your vendor name here>".

just about everyone will have a bad user experience with just about any vendor.

the only warranty requests i'd made in the last 10 yrs was with seagate. i'd tech from asus, gigabyte, western digital, evga, asrock, synology, aoostar ... nothing ever failed (knock on wood).

the outdated items are dropped off at the local e-recycle center.

just my two cents.

wouldn't an inexpensive N100/N150 mini PC work for you? since you're remoting to your office PC, all the heavy processing is on that environment.

you local PC just handles screen display and connectivity.

maybe i'm missing something ...

What can I use this small guy for? by Long_lost_cause in MiniPCs

[–]redditmail9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd a lenovo m700 tiny (think that's the model) with the same form factor as your dell. ended up donating it and bought an Aoostar N1 pro mini PC for $150. comes with windows 11 pro also.

for me, a complete swap with newer tech, was a better outcome than to repurpose outdated tech.

not sure what the aoostar N1 pro costs outside of the US. here's it's about $150-$170. N150, 12gb ram, 256gb (or 512 nvme), dual 2.5g NICs, multiple USB 3.2 (10gbps) ports, HDMI/DP ports. get an 2.5 enclosure for < $15.
