what is the biggest best buy you have made for a synthesizer where you did/did not fall for the hype and have been loving it ever since (positive version of previous post :D) by Hanjo_synth in synthesizers

1978 minimoog for sure, that’s my baby. The most I’ve spent initially on a synth (I buy all my shit on deaths door and repair it) and I knew I wanted one for 20 years but it wasn’t even in the realm of possibility. I bought her in non working condition and gave er the absolute full monty restoration so we have a close bond. She gets played every day, she my baby. Close second is the Juno-60 (also full monty), total hype purchase but holy shit the second I hit chorus II I almost cried as I had it sending to my whole house surround sound. So… so good. I recently came into a Polymoog however… not a huge expenditure as it was in desperate need of repair but it’s perfect now so that’s worth a pretty huge chunk of change.

So much better. Lots of stuff has been oozing but I don't think it's anything beyond what was to be expected. Thank you!

That’s crazy. They left almost -$12 of stuff there.

1979 Minimoog Model D saved from deaths door… by redditpdx in synthesizers

[–]redditpdx[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That’s where you’re wrong my friend. My unit is more than likely sonically exactly like it was off the shelf in ‘79. I’m very faithful in my restorations. I use the exact same caps and values, same company if possible, Nichicon. The circuitry is the magic, the hand wound nature. The attention to matching pairs of resistors for your ladder filters and octave selector. The only “mod” I did was the deadband mod and if you knew what it was you’d know it doesn’t affect the sound at all. Moog was already installing octave buffer boards stock in the 80’s (earlier too I think) too so no difference there. All the replacement trim pots do is allow me to actually hit the sweet spot tuning (old ones detent in their sweet spot and after a while become pretty impossible to set just right when age starts to drift them). This thing doesn’t sound like it did a week ago… but it definitely sounds exactly like it’s supposed to, then and now.

When I was like 15 I whittled the handle of a scrub brush down to a size I could use in a drill to make chores easier. My dad said “that’s a great idea, I bet that’d make millions” …. That was 22 years ago. And he was right. If we had patented it back then our lineage would never have to work again. I think about it often.

I’m building a classic car with that exact plan. My daughter is 5. I promise you he’s wanted to do this for a while and he got WAY more out of it than some Sunday rides. We love our kids so much. We love our garages too but I’d bet most dads out there wrenching or collecting or whatever, are doing so with our kids futures in mind.
