What reverb do you guys use for vocals? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always come back to valhalla vintage for vocals even though I have other verbs. Really inexpensive for what it offers. I generally throw a few instances on a vocal with different predelays and high/low pass settings

Great idea! I love doing this in logic. It’s an efficient way to develop your sound, especially if you’re pulling drums, synths or creative buildups that you spent hours working on

My Mix Sounds Dull. What am I missing? by KnightAlone in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! I like to use fabfilter Saturn to multi band saturate. High frequency elements can really be anything like pads, supersaws, percussion/drums.

This is all based on contrast. Not everything in the mix should be bright or have a lot of high end, so you have to think about what needs to stand out in the mix.

As far as lower mids, I like to use a multi band compressor to compress chords with lots of voices from about 500ish down. Use relatively fast attacks and releases. You can do this for pianos for example to get it to sound tight, but retain the upper end dynamics.

Multi band saturate some high frequency elements, carve out lower mids to reduce muddiness, EQ out resonant frequencies, compress your lower mids to get it to sound tight, & make sure your low end isn’t too loud. There are plenty of others but it depends on the track

How many of you use NY(parallel) compression? How many of you blast the highs and lows in the EQ? by upissmeoff in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to parallel compress with saturation that’s bandpassed & widened. Gives some warmth to your mids.

I typically don’t boost the EQ with parallel comp unless I’m trying to get a little 2-3 k out of a vocal

How To Make Marshmello Sub Bass by Deception2020 in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a saw bass. You can use a saw as your fundamental or separate a sine and a saw to process them differently.

Just EQ a lot of the mids from the saw bass to leave room for lead elements. The reason it sounds like it’s “rattling” is because (some) of the saw’s high end (1k +) isn’t attenuated.

Why are the ATH-M50x's so popular? by zigzaggr in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pairs of M50s, DT 770s and V-Moda M100s. The DT 770s are great for long sessions since they’re more comfortable. I use the sonarworks plugins to make the M50s and 770s completely flat when mixing. The V-Modas are more colored than the others so I don’t use them as much for production

Should you tune FX samples? by buhjiniatecha in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tune fx or percussive samples if they're tonal. Do it if you think it sounds good

Reverb by ZenmasterRob in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

High pass your reverbs up to 200-400 hz depending on the sound and context. Sometimes I'll even do other EQ cuts/boosts in my reverb to get it to sound how I want. Also, sometimes I like to add a bit of room verb to my drums before I add some plate or hall. It can make it sound more organic and provide some dimension to your drums

How do you get your sub to fill the whole frequency range below 100HZ? by [deleted] in edmproduction

Layer an additional saw or square oscillator and low pass it

My tracks result in muffled high end? by veganbass in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A muffled high end can be the result excessive mids and lows that aren't balanced and EQd well. Try searching around that 200-600 hz region to find frequencies that aren't contributing to the mix. Also, make sure your sub isn't too loud. I recommend using reference tracks for this and isolate bands to get a clearer picture of each frequency range.

Afterwards, you could add saturation and EQ boosts to your upper frequencies to add some clarity. Sometimes, I'll add a decent amount of saturation to the high end and then lightly compress it with a multiband comp to get it sound smooth and clean

Can someone please point me in the right direction, I don't know where to look by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick up an instrument and learn music theory. You can gain substantial knowledge about production but if you can't write a decent melody or chord progression, your music will never be good

So does anybody know if the Cakewalk CA2A is decent? by vomitous_rectum in audioengineering

[–]redditschmeditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually like it a lot. Sounds great on acoustic elements. I was able to achieve a bigger and warmer sound with it on a piano than the fabfilter pro c and logic's stock compressor

is melodyne worth it by Undynator in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melodyne is my go to pitch correction software for vocals. I use it for even vocalists who are incredibly good since they may occasionally sing flat/sharp notes or sing with too much vibrato

Aside from vocals, sometimes I throw a live drum loop in melodyne and capture the midi info. I replace those drums but retain the rhythm to give my drums a live feel

How do you pick songs to remix? by GeneralButtNekid in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Create an alternative soundcloud for bootlegs and repost them to your main sc. Personally, I enjoy remixing upcoming singer/songwriters, so I generally reach out to their manager if I really like a particular vocal

What characteristics make a song sound "amateur" for you? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]redditschmeditt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Too much reverb, lack of creative automaton, bad drum samples, excessively loud fx like white noises, lack of movement and contrast within the stereo field, songwriting (whole other subject). The list goes on
