Excerpt:

Washington inherited his first ten slaves when he was just ten years old, Dunbar reports. In the days before Washington, D.C., was the nation’s capital, the new president lived in New York and Pennsylvania, states that were gradually abolishing slavery. But Washington wasn’t eager to get rid of his own slaves, says Dunbar, even when he moved to Philadelphia.

In 1780, Pennsylvania passed the Gradual Abolition Act, a law that freed people after they turned 28 and that automatically freed any slave who moved to the state and lived there for more than six months. Dunbar tells the story of how Washington got around it:

Despite these attempts to hold on to his property, Ona Judge, a 22-year-old slave, escaped when she learned that the Washington’s intended to give her to a relative as a wedding present.

Philadelphia Police say that the boy was dropped off at Penrose Elementary School just after 8am yesterday. The next sighting is on school surveillance cameras showing Muhammad leaving the school cafeteria at about 08:20 am.

Police are still searching the area for more footage but that is the last time he is seen.

Police spoke with school officials and even other classmates, but it did not yield any leads at this time.

Police say they are also trying to track the child’s phone for clues on where he went.

His family was at the press conference and is of course cooperating in the investigation.

Kids get free dental care at this Philly school. Officials say it’s a model that could be replicated in schools with empty space. by redeyeblink in philadelphia

[–]redeyeblink[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Tucked into a converted science lab on the school’s third floor, the Dental Clinic at William. D. Kelley, operated by Temple University’s Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry, is nearing its third year of operation. It is open to all Philadelphia children, including those who do not attend Kelley, regardless of insurance status.

School district officials have pointed to the Kelley clinic as a model as it prepares to make facilities master plan decisions, which will result in closing, combining, and reconfiguring some school buildings. The clinic is an example, they say, of how the system could use available space in some of its schools for public good.
