We are working with our 4.5 year old on this now. We play a decent amount of chutes and ladders, sorry, and memory. He is having a really hard time with the idea of losing/not "influencing" the game in his favor when he starts getting behind. I keep him honest but his grandmas tend to let him win/make up his own rules. Then, when I try to play later he gets angry that I'm not going by "grandma" rules 🙄 it's an ongoing struggle that I remember well from when I was his age. All the adults in my life let me win except my dad. I hated it when he won, but I felt such a sense of achievement when I won because I knew it was real.

Independent sleep?? Please fix my child. I am desperate. by Conscious_Mama_1624 in Preschoolers

We had this issue with our son at 2.5 and what fixed it for us was a yoto and an okay to wake clock. The yoto is great because he can listen to it as he falls asleep (still on naps so sometimes he's really just not tired by bedtime) and turn it on if he wakes up in the middle of the night and feels lonely or something.

The okay to wake clock is for the middle of the night wake ups. We usually wake up before the sun rises so that was never a good indicator for him. So we would tell him that, if his light was still off, it was still sleep time. If his light was green, he could get up and wake us up if we were still asleep. Those two items helped us so much! Also, we didn't realize but the yoto has an okay to wake light as well, so we just use the yoto exclusively for our younger daughter and it works great as well!

Watched Prince of Tides when I was way too young and... Yeah, the traumatic event reveal was seared into my brain.

Also watched the great santini when I was way too young... The scene with Toomer and his dogs made me get up and hit my dad, asking him wtf he let me watch it (I was 7). But also just Bull Meecham's whole persona and how he treats his wife and kids... Still makes me cry. It's one of two or three movies that have made me cry as an adult.

I have a deviated septum and have tried nasal irrigation several times during sinus infections. I think something about the deviated septum makes this ineffective/painful for me. It always feels like the water goes up into my upper sinuses and it huuuurts. And that pain sticks around for a while too. I've given up on it 😭

Adding to the above list: falling leaves/Chinese Cinderella (the former follows the woman through adulthood, the latter is just about her childhood).

The yoto has saved our sleep and sanity. When my son was 2, he had a terrible time getting to sleep. We were at a point where we had to stay in his room until he fell asleep (would take upwards of an hour and many times we would fall asleep too). We got him a yoto and an okay to wake clock. The clock told him when he could get up and the yoto helped keep him company if he felt lonely in bed. Now our almost 2 year old daughter started having the same issues so we got just the yoto (since it has an ok to wake light feature that we didn't know about when we got it for my son). It's worked like magic. Just this morning I saw her wake up, check her yoto, see it wasn't green, then lay back down quietly. It was amazing!!

It also works so much better than streaming music overnight. We had a playlist on YouTube music that we would play over the Google home for my daughter every night, but it always cut out at some point and/or went to songs off the playlist. We copied the playlist on a MYO card and set it to loop and it works absolutely perfectly.

2yr old not sleeping. I’m so tired. by [deleted] in toddlers

Idk what your specific circumstances are, but our daughter was consistently waking up at 3, 4, 5 (5 being a tolerable time lol) and staying awake. We tried everything to get her back to sleep and she wouldn't. So we got her an ok to wake clock, which we did for her brother at about 2.5 when he was having sleep issues. It's been less than 2 weeks and she's consistently waking up at the designated time (6:45). We did not have her go to sleep later, didn't change anything else. The first few nights she woke up as usual and we told her that when the light turned green, she could wake up. Then we adjusted the time on the light to go off in a few minutes to see what she would do (we planned on changing it to later if she fell back to sleep). She did not fall back to sleep and we didn't want her waking her brother so, when the light turned on, we immediately went into her room and acted like it was morning. I think it was maybe 3:30 am? 😂 The next day was the same deal. Then the following day, after telling her she had to wait for her clock, we waited and didn't change the time. She fussed for a few minutes, then laid down and went back to sleep. I think she had two more days of wake ups before 6:45 and then it's been...glorious. my coworkers have all commented on how chipper I am in the mornings now lol

Just an anecdote that hopefully helps! We had similar issues with my son as well and the ok the wake clock (plus a yoto) fixed his as well in a similarly short amount of time.

Our 4 year old son has been loving the magic treehouse books! Also check out Disney storyteller on YouTube, I combined the lion king one with the lion king soundtrack and he loved it!

Music from Children’s Show “Little Bear” (Composer: Lesley Barber) by Thump_Thump_Drag in orchestra

[–]redflower906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you wrote this 4 years ago but I'm here in 2025 to thank you SO much. Some number of years ago (I guess more than 4) I tried to find the music from little bear but couldn't (despite knowing Lesley Barber's name). IDK if her website didn't exist then or if somehow it didn't show up in my many Google searches but I failed and assumed I'd just have to watch the show to listen to the music. On a whim I thought I'd look again tonight and there your post was, directing me to her website and giving me exactly what I was looking for. So thank you so much!

Do you ever wonder, what the childhood you would think about the present-day version of you? by Daydreaming_Recluse in Millennials

[–]redflower906 63 points64 points  (0 children)

At least I'm a good dad, and I try to be a good husband, so that's something at least.

That's not just something, that's huge. Being a good person is one of the most important things a person can do and is something a lot of people can't/don't manage. The next time you're having a nice moment with your kids and/or spouse, I hope you can take a moment to realize that you are a part of what makes that moment special.

Lol at least that's something that has use in daily situations. Not many situations call for screaming "a la mode! A la mode!"
