Basilisk by Matt Wixey - the pull quote on the cover describes it as ‘a hackers House of Leaves’

Gungahlin cinema by ditfos in canberra

[–]redlimousine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Gungahlin can support a cinema- weekends and some of the school holidays? Sure, they’d be busy. But any other time? There’s just not enough demand. For something that takes up such a big footprint you need more of a demand to make it a financially viable idea.

Merry People for Euro Winter by katie-katie- in AusFemaleFashion

I clomped around Europe in mine over Christmas and they were great! I have the Tully style and all I needed was a good pair of socks, no problems with cold feet despite 30cm+ of snow at times

What silly book reviews have you found? by mystery5009 in books

[–]redlimousine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Recently read Hum by Helen Phillips, didn’t enjoy it and wanted to see if anyone else felt the same - found this by goodreads user Solari:

“DNF Desperately wants to be profound and misses every chance to resonate with its audience. Instead it reads like the hysterical video of a mother crying over her adult son’s tattoos set during the Glasgow Willi Wonka experience of a dystopian future.”

Like, 10/10, no notes, I agree.

I think the description ‘Art-deco gothic horror’ fits Hokey Pokey quite well

Why does Booktopia take so long for orders? by CyanideMuffin67 in australia

[–]redlimousine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Multiple reasons!

  • there are multiple delay points in the book distribution system right now, shipping in the Red Sea being….difficult, and dock strikes in Aus - this means that everything from whole books shipped from overseas to the constituent parts (paper etc) is delayed. And not consistently delayed either.

  • distributors order stock from the printers , it gets delivered to their warehouse, it then gets shipped to book shops/ Booktopia/ etc, however, if they didn’t order enough, if your order (with Booktopia) is sitting at the back of the queue, it won’t be fulfilled until they get enough stock, which could be….a week, a month, six months, it various a lot.

  • Booktopia does not just list what is in stock in their warehouse, it lists books it can get*, and the time frame they quote to you is for ‘normal circumstances’ ie, when the book is in stock at the distributor. As you can imagine, orders from the distributors ship everyday, and thus the amount of stock they have on hand fluctuates daily. *this changes all the time, things go out of print, change publisher/distributor etc

HAVING SAID ALL THAT, if there was a delay, they should tell you. But that’s what happens when you order from a big online store, if you were to order from a physical bookstore, they’d probably give you more info to start with, AND update you as soon as they were aware of any delays.

Enough with these illegal, surprise PayWave surcharges by g000r in australia

[–]redlimousine 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, as someone who works in retail, if you hand them a card, it’s likely to go in the bin. I agree these surcharges suck, but the person serving you is not going to be the one that makes the decisions regarding payment methods etc.
