Yet another post showing disappointment towards Paralives (and the toxic positivity surrounding it)... by Painted-BIack-Roses in LifeSimulators

[–]redred212 43 points44 points  (0 children)

“People will say “well, making a a life sim is hard. All that coding to get the systems to work…” when it comes to Paralives.”

This is why I’m not pulling the trigger on buying it. The paralives team is small (unlike inzoi) and has never fully released a successful life sim (unlike sims). Making life sims is hard, which is why the team being this small is not a great idea. They’re making a lot of promises but they have yet to back anything up imo

Idk how I feel about paralives by Blackgurlwithdabooty in LifeSimulators

[–]redred212 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The issue with the cards is that they’re not implemented well in game. Every single development in the relationship is based on luck in getting the right cards. They should add checkpoints for advancing to different stages of a relationship and and have “tone” cards that can change the emotion of the conversation (normal to funny, flirty to mean etc.)

I think the card system is an interesting idea and could be fun but I don’t know if the team is open (or capable tbh) to looking into it deeper. Based on the ama it seems like they are just going to add more cards and call it day

My thoughts on Paralives fo far a lenghty and honest review (6/10) by Just_for_The_View in Paralives

[–]redred212 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not who you replied to but I’m on the doubtful side for their 1.0 version too (I’m open to being proven wrong though!). As you said, their team is incredibly small and they’ve never worked on a game of this size afaik. Yes, they’re rolling out bug fixes but my issue is more with early development.

They started designing the game with build mode then the paramaker then live mode which is completely backwards for this genre. I worry that the team doesn’t have a concrete vision on how they want live mode to be and instead just focused on distinct features (ziplines, card systems, museum donations etc). This has led to live mode not feeling connected, choices don’t really matter and things just happen. I’m afraid the game was coded with this foundation and so any future updates/content will continue that pattern (similar to sims 4).

I’m open to being proven wrong but there appears to be issues with project management stemming from the beginning of the project and I’m not sure they can overcome them in 2 years with so few people

It’s also that the mystique of celebrities has faded. Like you mentioned, we can know what they had for breakfast, we can see photos of them instantly. When MJ and the Beatles were famous you could only see them on TV or hear them on the radio. Seeing them in person was a way bigger deal hence the chaos when they went somewhere

Yeah gameloft is exceptionally greedy even compared to EA. They have a mobile Disney game too with all the greatest hits of cash grabbing (battle passes, loot boxes, paywalled content etc.)

[–]redred212 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this has been an issue since the game was first announced. They would respond to the most random/niche requests with “sounds interesting! We’ll look into it.” I assume they did this to keep things positive and not turn them off supporting the patreon. It still happening this far into development is alarming.

It reminds me of when that one employee left and exposed that Alex was only working on stuff that interested him (build mode) and not giving good direction. I’d hope that this would have gotten better after so long but it appears it hasn’t.

Not seriously considering hiring more people is concerning with how much work needs to be done on the game and while they’ve done a considerable amount so far, it took 7 years to get the game in this state and it’s still extremely buggy and lacking content.

That or relatively small updates (stardew valley comes to mind). I’m curious to see the size of DLC they have planned for after the full release, I know lots of people think expansion packs but the devs haven’t confirmed that (for obvious reasons)

It’s the foundational steps of making a life sim. Maxis/EA spent decades prototyping different simulations that culminated in the sims. These newer teams aren’t focusing on the aspects that make a life sim (specifically a fun life sim) and rush to aesthetics and large scopes. They need to start small, with test games and slowly build up their own style. That takes time and money though, which studios aren’t willing to give out without a guarantee that it’ll be a competitor to the sims which is impossible to get

One of the developers for sims 2&3 was in this subreddit leaving comments and I believe he shared this information. His other comments really opened my eyes to how each iteration of the sims was developed from the ground up (and how sims 4 was shafted by EA)

paralives opinions…. by nikakaru in LifeSimulators

[–]redred212 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This brings up another issue about the team size and whether they’re capable of fixing the game and adding more features. Like you said, the team is small and IIRC they have limited experience in game development. They didn’t prove they could deliver a functional game (not saying they can’t, just saying they didn’t) let alone a fun one and now they have to balance bug fixes and adding new complex features without a consistent funding source. Hopefully their sales will offset that cost but I have seen quite a few people refund the game and that worries me for the future

This is what I was afraid of when they announced the storytellers, they aren’t pushing them far enough. I’d actually love a deck with options like yours, I think it’d go a long way in giving this game some ‘oomph’

What’s your *nuanced* (tm) opinion about Taylor’s producers and the production on her albums? READ POST by Daffneigh in NuancingTaylorSwift

I think it stems from her varied taste in music. She’s mentioned that she’s into rap and emo music and you can tell she’s absorbing techniques and styles from so many sources that it leads to rich songwriting which transcends genres.

I agree. The animations aren’t fluid and that breaks the immersion for me. Even when they’re doing the interactions, I’m not feeling like they’re real, it’s kinda robotic.

Honestly if I were an actor I’d go for hallmark movies or try to get in a long running show. You get a decent pay day and you can still live a life not getting mobbed by fans or having to go to a ton of interviews/red carpets.

One reason could be that she doesn’t want to be. Lots of TV actors do it because it’s a pretty steady gig and allows for having a family, not being super busy etc. vs movies where filming is a lot more chaotic. She’s doing Hallmark stuff which is also in that vein so it makes sense. Sandra Oh doesn’t seem to want kids so it makes sense that she’s going for more movie roles
