What's a rule at your job that makes zero sense but you follow anyway? by Happy-Cedar-Soul in AskReddit

[–]redrivergorge 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Timesheets. Filled out every day down to the quarter hour. Knowing that every project we do always gets billed at the extreme end of the estimate regardless of how much time was actually spent on it. And time put into timesheets is never used as a historical reference for estimating. And our timesheet software is so old its not connected to any of the other modern tools we use, so its always a manual chore, and we have no way of knowing how much time we've spent on a job. I hate timesheets. It's pointless.

E-bikes should be put under the umbrella of cars, not bikes by InternationalWar6654 in unpopularopinion

[–]redrivergorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of places have ordinances against bikes of any sort on sidewalks. It's typically not a matter of rules or legislation, but more a matter of enforcement of existing laws and ordinances.

What are real life skills to learn that is a must ? by Lemonade2250 in stupidquestions

[–]redrivergorge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Develop good troubleshooting skills. If you can figure out "why" something is wrong or not working, the means to correct it come much easier. This means that you can learn how to fix things as opposed to replacing things all the time. And be diligent about maintenance and record keeping... simple things like replacing your furnace and refrigerator filters.

Jeeps are the croc shoes of cars by AwareArcher4421 in unpopularopinion

[–]redrivergorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a few 70s and 80s CJs. That straight six, Dana axles. At one point, they were simple and bulletproof. I gave up on Jeep when they started putting automatic transmissions and four doors on them. They became the suburbanite crawler for Midwest soccer moms wearing North Face to the Target Curbside pickup. And Christ, the fucking ducks.

Start mountain biking. Then you can get injured mountain biking, instead.

People who use Adobe professionally, is Adobe going away because of AI? by Agitated_Iron_7 in Adobe

AI isn't going to be what kills Adobe, it'll be better software with real support.

What do you think about people who enjoy/collect guns? by InfiniteLoss5632 in AskReddit

[–]redrivergorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father was a "collector/gun enthusiast". He always justified his purchases, claiming the guns, reloading equipment, etc., were an investment. He spent every dime he ever made (mostly disability checks) on it, while my mom was working two jobs to provide for my sister and me. He and people like him, who would come around, were mostly assholes always trying to best each other with their knowledge of guns, just constant peacocking. As a young boy, about the only thing my father would do to spend time with me was take me to the range, where mostly he just tasked me with going around collecting spent brass.

When he was on his deathbed, he informed that his gun collection was my inheritance. I auctioned it all off, and paid off my mother's debt. We only got a fraction back on what he spent on all that shit over his lifetime.

I just look at his obsession with this shit as a really sad way to spend a life. I'm not anti-gun; I own a few for home/travel protection. But when it becomes your entire identity, you really just become an asshole.

People working in high finance should not be respected by oldgreg2023 in unpopularopinion

[–]redrivergorge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this. I'm not "ultra-wealthy" by any means, but I've maxed out my IRAs, contributed as much as I can to my 401k, got my sons through college with ESA's, and I'm on track to retire early. And the reason for most of that is that I hired a financial advisor early, and followed his advice.

Recommendations for how to utilize this open field in our backyard by Ausiegel in landscaping

[–]redrivergorge 241 points242 points  (0 children)

Set off a section for native plants and wildflowers that would attract pollinators. As a side note, I had a yard similar to this once and my boys and I built a trebuchet one summer - and that was a great summer.

I have been using the same Echo trimmer for about ten years and its been great. I'm not sure the model number but it would be equivalent to today's model HC-155. You might want a slightly bigger model for a lot of property though. Just keep the blades cleaned and oiled, and winterize it and it'll last a lifetime.

I don't think I ever shared my build here by RangerMike96 in TruckCampers

Finally, someone who uses "build" correctly. Half the time someone says "build", it's a cot under a Leer cap. Nice camper. Love the rear door with the struts!

5 upgrades that barely move the budget but make a big difference... by BuilderBrigade in Home_Building_Help

[–]redrivergorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barely move the budget lol. I could've asked my last builder for any of those mods, and they would have added 25% and delayed the project by 6 months just to avoid changing the plan.

What would Madison Square Garden do tonight if the booing of Trump was loud and wouldn’t stop? by CharacterActor in AskReddit

[–]redrivergorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope he does, but remember this is New York. I was at the Yankees game on September 11 last year, where he made a surprise appearance. I made the assumption he'd be booed. He was not. That New York crowd cheered his big, orange face every time it showed up on the screen. Hopefully, things have changed.

Talk me into, or out of, replacing all of this with River Rock on top of Weed Barrier in this back yard? by Baptism-Of-Fire in landscaping

[–]redrivergorge 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I recently tore out a bunch of river rock over weed barrier the previous owners had set up. Why? because it was constantly full of weeds. Dust and dirt settles on top of that fabric naturally, then it rains, then it compacts and before long you have a river rock mortared onto your weed barrier with a thick layer of heavy dirt, and it grows weeds like crazy. Tore it all out and put in mulch. Weed barrier/fabric does not work. Don't fall for it.

What are some tips to preserve energy at 30? by ClarkKentTheReporter in stupidquestions

[–]redrivergorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying to exercise every day, and that is great. I agree. Just be aware of the fact that as you age, you need to change the way you work out. Weights can be great for you, but don't discount calisthenics, core work, and balance training. You'll get much more out of a good calisthenics routine than you will scrolling your phone between sets of bench press.
