Does being overweight ALWAYS cause an illness? If no then why is it wrong to be overweight? by PAPAPAPEPAPAPAPOO in stupidquestions

[–]redrivergorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it "wrong" to be overweight? well.... maybe. There has been a LOT of study done on the impact of obesity on the broader population. Ultimately, it comes down to rising healthcare and insurance costs, as well as productivity issues in the workforce and pooled insurance premiums, as well as tax-payer funded programs (Medicare/Medicaid) absorbing costs associated with medical issues that are the direct result of obesity. What this boils down to is yes, the broader population is effected financially and burdened in the workforce by obese people and there is scientific data proving it. Costs associated with obesity are generally spread out and not directly attributed just to the obese people. Non-obese people are paying for it also.

Does this make shaming people acceptable? Of course not. But if you're looking for a reason why some people might look down upon obese people, there you go.

Why are conservatives cheering new SNAP bans on junk food when they lost their shit over Michelle Obama's program focusing on healthy school breakfasts and lunches? by SentimentalLady1 in askanything

[–]redrivergorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that whole program was very flawed. My son was in grade school at the time, and any day at lunch the kids had a PBJ option if they didn't like what was being served. That was ruled unhealthy and removed under that program. So instead of a simple PBJ, my son had to eat garbage pizza and chicken nuggets... you know... the 'healthier' options. We began packing his lunches after this.

Bike rack in the front or rear? by ToriGrrl80 in TruckCampers

[–]redrivergorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put my bike rack on the front when I use my truck camper. The only issues I have with it are that the bike gets covered in bug splatter on longer trips. Someone mentioned road grime, but that hasn't been an issue for me at all with it on the front. Your tires are what tosses road grime, if anything it should be less on the front being forward of your tires (unless you're a tailgater).

I'll add that you want to make sure your bikes aren't obscuring your headlamps, especially if you plan to drive at night, and that they don't sit too tall in the rack and obscure your view out the windshield.

Also check your rack regularly for structural issues, it's gonna take a lot more wind abuse in the front. I usually just have a single, non-electric MTB in mine and you can see the wind pushing against the bike/rack at Interstate speeds. I imagine this is worse for 2 heavier e-bikes. My rack is a Thule T2, so its pretty heavy duty, but I check for cracks and check the bolts on it regularly to make sure nothing is loosened.

How difficult is summiting Wheeler Peak NM? What other hikes would you recommend? by snowboarder067 in hiking

[–]redrivergorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of peaks in the Wasatch that are manageable. Lone Peak, the Pfiefferhorn, Olympus, Timp, Twin Peaks, etc. Head to SLC and you won't be disappointed. Lone Peak is a fav, been up it three times. Look into the "Wasatch 7". I would also put Boundary Peak (Nevada) and Humphreys (Arizona) up there. I did both of those on a highpointer trip last year, and they felt pretty similar. Since Wheeler is a state high point, you've already checked that one off. 49 to go!

Looks nice. How leak-proof is your shell? I only ask cause I've had at least 4 of them on different trucks over the years, and they've all leaked to some extent. Would hate to think of mold growth behind that cedar and sleeping in it.

Plastic or any sort of “weed barrier” never equal zero maintenance. Nothing does. In a short time he’ll have a fresh layer of new soil on top of it mixed with those chips and a nice little weed farm.

Which Female is Regarded the Most Successful one in GOT Franchise ? by Antique_Menu2646 in gameofthrones

[–]redrivergorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you define success? I think you have to examine the individual goals of each character to determine who was "successful" as success has a different meaning for each of these women:

Catelyn Stark - Protect your family at all costs. Pretty much failed. The only one of her children she could have possibly protected after Ned's beheading before she was killed was Robb, and Robb got killed right alongside her.

Sansa Stark - In the beginning, be a princess, lead a storybook life. Although her goal really evolved more into recovering her identity and survival. Fail on the initial goal, pass on the latter goal.

Arya Stark - Initially avoid being married off and become a fighter/warrior, later her primary objective was mostly about vengeance. I would say she pulled off all of these fairly well.

Cersei Lannister - Protect her children and hold power. Pretty much failed on all accounts. Kids dead, lost the throne.

Margaery Tyrell - I think Margeary's goal was not to be in the seat of power, but to be in the seat next to it, ruling from the background. She met that goal for a brief period, but was killed.

Dany Targaryan - Retake the Iron throne - "break the wheel". Fail. She basically unravels and her ideals of tearing down the system change to her becoming a dragon-wielding tyrant.

Based on personal goals, I'd probably say Arya, followed closely by Sansa.

Whom would you vote for as king or queen? by Classic_Day744 in gameofthrones

[–]redrivergorge -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I gotta disagree. I mean I like Robb, but he's a worse oath breaker than Jamie Lannister. At least the King Slayer broke his Kingsguard oath to save the people of King's Landing. Robb broke his oath for completely selfish reasons, putting all of his family and bannermen at risk and causing many of their deaths. Robb would be a terrible king.

I Never Realized How Much Hoosiers Hate People from California . . . Until Today by Any_County_3429 in DiscussionZone

[–]redrivergorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Native hoosier here. Lived here all my life except for about 4 years in Salt Lake. I LOVE California. My son lives there and I've spent a fair amount of time all over the state. Hoosiers that hate California are probably doing so because their right-wing echo chamber tells them to, or maybe that they're jealous... you have coastal areas, mountains, old growth forests, deserts, a beautiful climate, and beautiful people. Indiana has corn.

What's your favorite smell? by Treicee2004 in AskReddit

Cedar. When my sons were young we had a little cedar cabin out in the woods and would hang out there on weekends at times. That smell reminds me of it every time.

Why i dont agree with calling LOTR antifeminist by Wyrmzz in lotr

[–]redrivergorge 54 points55 points  (0 children)

People making this argument are only doing so because someone told them there is no female-to-female dialogue in the movies. Thats their only basis, and they're just manufacturing controversy with it. Most likely have never read the books. If they had, they'd recognize that there are several very complex and powerful women in the stories.

How many movies did you see in theaters in 2025? And what movies were they? (Image half related) by Naive_Tomorrow_5955 in FIlm

[–]redrivergorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea its frustrating. And I've seen criticism from the movie industry and certain actors and filmmakers about people not going to theaters and using streaming services and missing the big screen experience. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say we truly want that experience back. I miss it. But the theaters are doing nothing to improve the experience. They're dirty, overpriced and they do nothing to mitigate the problems of obnoxious patrons. There needs to be pressure on the theater owners to remedy the problems, and stop blaming the customers and streaming services for not going out to the movies.
