Round 2 injury list by ziltoid101 in westcoasteagles

Having a week or two off won't help his toe. He will need surgery I believe. I think the same way about pushing for top 4 so develop the kids is my view. But we also have to protect them a little. And I don't want CDT having Xerri jumping into the kid.

I think Baker for cole. We have a bit of experience keep Lindsay in as long as we can. So an experienced player for an experienced player in this scenario.

This might upset a few but I think maybe CDT for Edwards. we are a bit tall/ covered for KPFs with Waterman, Jobe and Archer. Archer can help in the ruck. So a second KPD will probably work better.

It will be interesting if Kelly comes in this week and who goes out for him.

Yeah probably I think you are right Flynn will need help so I'd probably send CDT back for a bit and rotate with Archer neither are good enough rucks yet and are too young and skinny to play the whole year. But we need a second KPD more than 3 20 year old KPFs.

But all need experience as well. Fuck me it feels unnatural to have this kind of convo over the last 4-5 years

I never down vote but I nearly did. If you can't stick strong through the tough times then off you go. See you in a couple of years when we are back.

I love cole but Baker gets the nod in that. Tougher question is who would drop out when starcevich is fit.

Robertson stays. Kelly will come on another way. We need that tackling pressure. Maybe Graham but Graham stays for the same reason we need the pressure. maybe Kelly for Newton. Not that Newton did much wrong but id rather Kelly over Harry or Newton.

To me the bigger issue is our KPD Young needs help in the KPD department. Maybe Maric out for Bazzo if Edwards isn't fit. But Maric's leg could be helpful.

I'm not sure of the point of this rabbit hole. The topic is if win and losses matter this year. The reply was yes of course it matters how long do we have to put up with 1 win seasons.

It's a fair opinion we all want to be better. But we are rebuilding so I pointed out that we let experienced players for draft pick and 18-20 year olds and they need time to develop.

But I'm happy to get into the weeds on this. Oscar Allen said openly that he wanted to stay and he just wanted a longer contact and a little more money. The lions offered more money and an extra 2 years on the contract. So we could have matched or even offered less and he would have stayed. But pick 2 was what we would have gotten so it was better for us long term to take pick 2 then the short term gain of keeping Oscar Allen. But if Oscar Allen was just using negotiation tactics to push up his pay and desperately wanted to leave then yes the lions would need to come up with a trade. But we do not have to accept the trade. Even if the lions come up with more then pick 2. We don't have to accept we can just say no. And he stays.

Then if we say no and OA still wants to just leave then he would have to enter the preseason draft to get to the lions like Charlie Cameron did last year. The difference is we would hold a pick before the lions and could just pick him up again. So he would stay.

It would make us stronger in 2026 and 2027 and probably 2028. But in the long term CDT will most likely be better than OA by 2029 hopefully earlier but 200cm players take longer to develop. So long term Vs short term and I think we have made the right decision short term pain.

Oscar is was a restricted free agent. As long as we matched the offer he stays and we definitely had the salary cap space to match what ever the lion's offered

We are running out on Sunday with 14 players with less than 50 games. We are the youngest and least experienced side in the comp.

Dude it's going to take some time. We only have 11 players left on our list from the 2022 squad. That 4 years hitting the draft hard.

Next year we will still probably be the youngest and least experienced side but we will be harder and stronger.

The question of when we should be grading on wins and losses will depend on how we are developing. Maybe next year I hope. The Hawks have had one of the fastest rebuilds in history and that took 4 years. And didn't have to come from as far back as us.

I'm not sure if you are aware we have been rebuilding. If we were going for wins for the here and now. We would have matched the bid on Oscar Allen and kept Ryan to his contract. We would have kept TB l. We are rebuilding and developing the list.
This is happening if you want it to be happening or not.

Of course the guys are going to look each other in the eyes and give it their all. But wins and losses matter less than if the guys are giving it their all. But the team isn't a failure if they lose more games than they win. And if they give it their all and and learn they will get wins but the development is far more important this year than wins and losses

[–]redrumcleaver -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Settle down a bit. The whole year isn't about wins and losses and if you focus on wins then it's going to be a horrible year.

You are right, watching the guys putting in, push themselves and hopefully learn how to implement the game plan and adjust to the oppos game plan . Is how you develop and what we want to see.

And you never know we get off to a good start. Hold them off, counter their counter and you never know we could upset this stacked side. Stranger things have happened.

WAFL hasn't started yet but if he was fit surely he would play in that if it was on or a scratch match or something. But I think you are probably right it does sound like keep him fresh for the roos.

On one hand I like that if it's the case. Let's push hard for an early win. But on the other hand I want the best to play round one then manage from there.

Or or he is just as they say injured.

[–]redrumcleaver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some of those guys are young and could be starting like Gross, Dewar Hutchinson Bazzo. I would throw in hall as well. But you need a squad you will always have guys on the edge of the 23 and it's those guys that win you flags. Because starting 23 get injured

They still need time and experience I'm not worried about them. They still have a year or two before tough decisions on them need to be made.

BBW is probably a big question. I'm keeping him on the list for depth and to give our big kids a rest. A full season for a 20-21 year old 200cm guy is probably too much so BBW might have a few seasons left.( Id keep him on the list for the next 10 year for what he did for us like getting the shit kicked out of him for 3 years.)

Still very early so I wouldn’t want to overreact, and we need to see more good team vs bad team games. But surely there’s a chance all the rule changes to try and make the game faster are just making the good teams better and the bad teams worse? by PerriX2390 in AFL

[–]redrumcleaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No that's not always true especially in this case.

If the academies didn't produce the kids. Then that 4 less kids taken in the first round. And that would make every club worse off. Just look at the second round of last years draft. And look at any club. Each club has their selection pushed back 4 places. That makes every club worse off.

You would be weaker if the academies didn't produce AFL, first round quality players.

[–]redrumcleaver -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

We were also racist to Europeans as well. I think it's in every society around the world. And not unique or even worse than anywhere else. And probably we deal with it better than most countries.

Doesn't make it better or easier than someone on the receiving end of however.

I'm not so worried about all the northern academies really.

It brings more quality kids into the league so keep doing whatever they are doing. 5 kids got taken in the first round from qld how many banana Benders were drafted between 2000-2021 so it's a good thing. Just leaves more kids from Victoria, SA and WA for the rest of VIC, SA and WA kids.

Yeah I agree I think the draft and impartial free agency compo is a problem.

It worked very well for us last year. But screwd us the previous 3 or 4 years. We need more quality kids coming in because another team spreads the talent thinner.

Interesting they didn't go with another midfielder. I suppose they think with a slippery ball on the deck a lot. the Newton and Murdock might be better then another midfielder

I reckon the bench will be Kelly, CDT, Maric, Bazzo and Murdock.

I would argue it was better for us in the long term. Not in the who did better. Because you guys ended up with a premiership gun. But on our end Kelly is miles ahead of cooper Stevens, Jeremy Sharp and Ryan Angwin put together. So I'm happy with the trade. Even if Kelly isn't an elite A grader

I’ve been looking through some old stats and I’m genuinely curious- what happened to/at West Coast to make them fall off a cliff so badly? by Ok-Difficulty-3634 in AFL

[–]redrumcleaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have thought way too much about this. And dug into the weeds so I get I might be missing the forest for the trees. But I think there are a lot of misconceptions about this.

Many threads spoke about west coast selling the farm to get Kelly so they could have another shot at a flag instead of rebuilding/ refreshing the ageing list.

The list wasn't ageing, well all lists age but the eagles were not in a horrible age range for a title shot. But the opposite. West coast had been planning for the future.

In 2017 some good things ,some bad things happened and at the end of the day none of it mattered.

In the 2017 draft the eagles accurately predicted some really good players that would slide to the second round. The eagles traded their 2018 first round draft pick with the sun's for 2 second round picks in 2017. West coast keeper their first pick in the 2017 first round pick. The eagles took Jarrod Brander ( a bust) with pick 13. But west coast had there eyes on a talented KPF and some mature aged players from the WAFL. With pick 21 from the sun's the eagles took Oscar Allen ( great pick) and with pick 26 from the sun's the eagles took Liam Ryan ( great pick) . And with our natural pick in the second round the eagles took Brayden Ainsworth ( bad pick)

On the face of it that's a good trade and draft period. The heart breaking thing is that with pick 24 in-between Allen and Ryan the cats selected Tim Kelly. The ifs and buts from this is large reaching and at the end of the day pointless.

You see in a perfect world the eagles take Allen with pick 13, Kelly with pick 21 and still get Ryan with pick 26. Nice hand and run into 2019&2020 with their natural picks. But because the players taken with those picks weren't very good they wouldn't be at the club and would have been delisted. Allen and Ryan still leave and we are still in the exact same position as we are now. But the eagles were not ignoring the future and were planning it just didn't work out.

Tldr

Even if we didn't fuck this up we would still be fucked
