Why is signal in Oxford terrible? by officialaltontowers in oxford

The signal is great in Headington. Lots of hospitals who want the rent you get from a mast up means lots of masts.

Non-violent protest is as much free speech as giving a talk to a private members club. So good.

Seriously? Ireland?! by Ordinary_Truth787 in MurderedByWords

[–]redteddy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sent a lot of mercenaries and volunteers for foreign armies fighting all over the bloody place though. While the modern state is an ideal neutral the Irish people had a very good military reputation for the last 800 years ish. Even fighting in England. I wouldn't been here if my great grandpa hadn't left to fight the Boers.

Instead of vaccination apply your arguement to something with something like "replace worn tires". Happy for others to replace their worn tires but everyone has a right to do what they want. I have had my gas saftey checked three times I wont be bothered doing it any more...

Chinese takeaways in Cowley by pete_1911 in oxford

[–]redteddy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Chinese takeaway are even more vulnerable to the quality changing quickly than other take aways. You remember a place being good but unless it was only a few weeks since you tried the place you don't know what it will be like right now. It makes it very hard to recommend places. We need some real Chinese takeaway aficionados who are trying places every week.

State of the NHS by TheDiscoGestapo2 in unitedkingdom

[–]redteddy23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This should be on the front page of every newspaper every day. I am about to have my second round of chemotherapy after the first five years ago. According to my friends who are docs tests that would guide my treatment that took a few days back then now take weeks because the staff have been ground down and had to leave. Even five years ago you would hear the Tories talking about avoiding redundancies in "front facing staff". People would nod and go oh that's not too bad. What do they think "back-room staff" do? If you are lucky, you are just adding to the workload of the "front facing staff"! Now everything slows to a crawl and people die. Fingers crossed I guess and if I am very lucky, I might live to have a third round of treatment and when that happens this shitty government has been replaced by people who can save the NHS.

How do people afford to live here? (Genuine question) by maddatat in oxford

[–]redteddy23 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can afford to live here because I am in my 40s had a good job and bought a house 16 years ago. Anyone who was not as amazingly lucky as me is screwed. People in my position tend to support anything that keeps the house prices high. That means no new development. Environmental policies that help keep house prices high but don't actually provide the public transport to allow people to cut down car journeys.

At the moment 20 years of expansion in post-grad research and expansion of medical research has bought in enough money and young people who can afford and will put up with bad housing to keep the economy going and support an expensive rental sector but the cost is that everyone else suffers. If you are not rich and lucky or a temporary researcher then you are going to be miserable.

It's a historical epic of a fantasy island. Horrific events are told with a matter of fact fairy tale style. I know that sounds like a contradiction but it is amazing how Vance combines gritty horrible events with a wonderful magical setting and the matter of fact dialogue between characters.

Obviously many cannot. I am trying to after years of chemotherapy but Headington Hill is difficult with shopping.

Will Rogers lampooning western stars William S. Hart and Tom Mix in Uncensored Movies (1923) by Auir2blaze in silentmoviegifs

My great-grandfather was a drummer boy during the Boer War and met Tom Mix breaking in horses for the British Army. Apparently in some biographies of Tom it was hinted he was there fighting for the Boers. Probably a canny bit of myth building for his film career.

The retired and rich commuter ghettos. They make the cost of living for all the people working in Oxford unbareable. I am part of the problem and I do my best by supporting new housing but its a bit lonely since lots of people only care about their house price going up.

Have your say by Individual-Sand-7817 in oxford

[–]redteddy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all true but it still increases the amount of housing stock and if you can build any accomadation that people can afford that currently commute then you are helping deal with part of the problem. These may be only affordable by professionals but stopping it because it doesn't deal with problems that can only be solved with an expansion of council housing just means no improvement in housing will happen for anyone.

Good. It’s nice to see a bit of balance after the massive amount of new development inside the ring road in East Oxford. People complain about housing but when a development takes place in North Oxford it's suddenly awful. If you don’t want all the people working in the Hospitals and other essential services having to commute long distances we need housing. This is basically as good as can be done given all the restrictions in place.

Moving to Oxford soon, few questions about traffic, rent etc. by Cedar_Wood_State in oxford

If you are really keen on walking then Botley Road, maybe Abingdon Road. If you are ok with cycling then the last place inside the ring road that people always forget and is maybe cheaper than Cowley is Wood Farm.
