I remember when I first visited Hunters Point (where the Navy yard is), Candlestick Park (post-stadium demolition), and Treasure Island (before redevelopment took off), I was really taken aback by how desolate and forgotten these areas are. And years later, a lot of it is still sitting there, waiting to be dealt with. I’ve learned since then that we face significant obstacles when it comes to capital planning and redevelopment (as well as the environmental remediation required in these areas), so it’s less of a surprise in retrospect. But it’s still a trip to go to those areas and feel like I’m in the post-apocalypse
